Meta-worry in adolescents: examination of the psychometric properties of the meta-worry questionnaire in an adolescent sample.

BACKGROUND: Meta-worry is considered a central component of the Metacognitive Model of Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Although initial research provides support for the applicability of this model to adolescent samples, the construct of meta-worry has yet to be examined in adolescents. AIMS: The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the Meta-Worry Questionnaire (MWQ), a measure designed to assess negative beliefs about worry, in an adolescent sample, and to examine the degree to which meta-worry is associated with pathological worry in adolescents. METHOD: A non-

Covert colour processing in colour agnosia.

Patients with colour agnosia can perceive colours and are able to match coloured patches on hue, but are unable to identify or categorise colours. It is a rare condition and there is as yet no agreement on the clinical definition or a generally accepted explanation. In line with observations from object agnosia and prosopagnosia, we hypothesised that (some of) these patients might still be able to process colour information at an implicit level. In this study, we investigated this possibility of implicit access to colour semantics and colour names in a man (MAH) who suffers from developmental

Temporal processing in poor adult readers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between two different temporal processing tasks and word identification performance in skilled, dyslexic and poor adult readers. In Experiment 1 spatial and temporal sequencing tasks were conducted. It was found that adult dyslexics were significantly less accurate than skilled readers across all conditions in the temporal sequencing task, and when higher numbers of stimuli were presented in the spatial task. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 in the temporal sequencing task and also found that poor readers had significantly higher m

Distractibility after frontal lobe lesions: behavioral and event-related brain potential evidence.

The authors used a semantic priming paradigm to investigate the distractibility phenomenon of patients with frontal lobe lesions (FLPs). They tested two distractibility categories: an inhibition category requiring inhibition of an automatic response and a distraction category caused by irrelevant, unexpected stimuli. Fifteen FLPs were compared with 2 matched control groups: 14 posterior-lesion patients and 15 normal controls. Both behavioral and event-related brain potential (ERP) measures were used. The results suggest that, although there were differences in performance between the FLP group

Drug-specific recovery of long-term memory and visual discrimination after anaesthetic-induced unconsciousness in rats.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorders represent a growing public health concern. To improve the translatability of preclinical findings, it is important to use similar research methods across species. In this study, we used a touchscreen-based cognitive testing system to train rats on the paired-associate learning (PAL) task, which assesses long-term visuospatial associative memory. The goal was to capture the time course of cognitive recovery after receiving mechanistically distinct anaesthetic drugs. METHODS: Adult Sprague-Dawley rats (eight males, eight females) were trained o

Cognitive Decline and Dementia in Chronic Widespread Pain: A Longitudinal Population-based Study.

BACKGROUND: Despite preliminary research suggesting an impact of chronic pain on cognition, the direct effects of chronic widespread pain (CWP) on cognition and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of CWP on dementia and cognitive performance and explore its potential neurobiological mechanisms. METHODS: This was a population-based cohort study utilizing data from the UK Biobank, which enrolled 500,000 individuals aged 37 to 73 yr from 2006 to 2010, with brain imaging scans initiated in 2014. CWP was defined based on participants' self-reported

Altered synaptic plasticity in Tourette's syndrome and its relationship to motor skill learning.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by motor and phonic tics that can be considered motor responses to preceding inner urges. It has been shown that Tourette patients have inferior performance in some motor learning tasks and reduced synaptic plasticity induced by transcranial magnetic stimulation. However, it has not been investigated whether altered synaptic plasticity is directly linked to impaired motor skill acquisition in Tourette patients. In this study, cortical plasticity was assessed by measuring motor-evoked potentials before and after paired

Intrusions into script-like action sequences: A behavioral investigation.

Prior knowledge can facilitate the learning of related material, while this new learning can itself modify the memory underlying that prior knowledge. Research on the flexibility of memory has concentrated on episodic memories (Hupbach et al., 2007), fear-related associations (Su et al., 2022), and categorical knowledge (Richter et al., 2019); little is known about the memories for structured action sequences. To address this, we trained participants on two minimal script-like action sequences containing repeated object pairs while manipulating two factors: the similarity between scripts (four

Learning and memory in monozygotic twins discordant for schizophrenia.

Learning and memory were assessed in 24 monozygotic (MZ) pairs of individuals discordant for schizophrenia or delusional disorder and seven normal pairs of MZ twins. On declarative memory tasks, the affected group displayed a pattern that might best be characterized as dysmnesic in that they performed significantly worse than the discordant unaffected group on story recall, paired associated learning, and visual recall of designs, but they learned over time, had relatively preserved recognition memory, and did not show profoundly accelerated rates of forgetting. Effortful, volitional retrieval

Neural correlates of sensory preconditioning: a preliminary fMRI investigation.

Sensory preconditioning (SPC; also known as behaviorally silent learning) consists of a combination of two neutral stimuli, none of which elicits an unconditional response. After one of them is later paired with an unconditional stimulus (US), the other neutral stimulus also yields a conditional response although it has never been paired with the US. In this study, an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) paradigm was used to specify brain regions involved in SPC. The results demonstrated that SPC was associated with significant changes in activity of several regions, nota

BDNF upregulation during declarative memory formation in monkey inferior temporal cortex.

In primates, visual long-term memory of objects is presumably stored in the inferior temporal (IT) cortex. Because brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is involved in activity-dependent neural reorganization, we tested the hypothesis that BDNF would be upregulated in IT cortex during formation of visual pair-association memory. To eliminate genetic and cognitive variations between individual animals, we used split-brain monkeys for intra-animal comparison in PCR-based mRNA quantitation. The monkeys learned a pair-association (PA) task using one hemisphere and a control visual task using th

Exposure to sounds during sleep impairs hippocampal sharp wave ripples and memory consolidation.

Sleep is critical for the consolidation of recent experiences into long-term memories. As a key underlying neuronal mechanism, hippocampal sharp-wave ripples (SWRs) occurring during sleep define periods of hippocampal reactivation of recent experiences and have been causally linked with memory consolidation. Hippocampal SWR-dependent memory consolidation during sleep is often referred to as occurring during an "offline" state, dedicated to processing internally generated neural activity patterns rather than external stimuli. However, the brain is not fully disconnected from the environment dur

Dynamic behavioral and neural correlates of letter-speech sound learning in typical and dyslexic readers.

Difficulties in forming letter-speech sound associations may constitute a challenge for individuals with dyslexia. However, the learning trajectories of these associations remain poorly understood. This EEG study examined behavioral and neural changes while 31 typical and 31 dyslexic adult readers learned to map six novel symbols to Dutch spoken syllables with either high or low phonological similarity. Both groups demonstrated successful learning with learning-related ERP changes over frontotemporal, temporoparietal, and occipitoparietal regions. Phonologically similar vs. dissimilar pairs sh

Use of sequence information in associative learning in control subjects and cerebellar patients.

Previous studies of our group have shown that cerebellar patients are impaired in their ability to associate a color and a numeral or two colors with a button push. The aim of the present study was to examine whether control subjects make use of sequence information in visuomotor associative learning tasks and if this ability is impaired in cerebellar patients. A group of eight patients with degenerative cerebellar disease and eight age, sex and IQ matched controls were tested. Subjects had to learn the association between pairs of colored squares and a button push. Two colored squares were sh

Cross-modal binding in developmental dyslexia.

The ability to learn visual-phonological associations is a unique predictor of word reading, and individuals with developmental dyslexia show impaired ability in learning these associations. In this study, we compared developmentally dyslexic and nondyslexic adults on their ability to form cross-modal associations (or "bindings") based on a single exposure to pairs of visual and phonological features. Reading groups were therefore compared on the very early stages of associative learning. We used a working memory framework-including experimental designs used to investigate cross-modal binding.

A search for effective reinforcers in appetitive conditioning for adult zebrafish: Ecologically relevant unconditioned stimuli.

Learning and memory related brain disorders represent a large unmet medical need. Laboratory studies with animals may model brain disorders and facilitate uncovering their mechanisms. The zebrafish has been proposed for such studies. However, numerous factors that influence performance in learning tasks have yet to be understood in zebrafish. One such factor is what motivates zebrafish. Here we introduce a novel reinforcer, an ecologically relevant unconditioned stimulus (US). We placed a photograph of gravel underneath quarter of the bottom of an experimental tank on one side and also positio

dRiskKB: a large-scale disease-disease risk relationship knowledge base constructed from biomedical text.

BACKGROUND: Discerning the genetic contributions to complex human diseases is a challenging mandate that demands new types of data and calls for new avenues for advancing the state-of-the-art in computational approaches to uncovering disease etiology. Systems approaches to studying observable phenotypic relationships among diseases are emerging as an active area of research for both novel disease gene discovery and drug repositioning. Currently, systematic study of disease relationships on a phenome-wide scale is limited due to the lack of large-scale machine understandable disease phenotype r

Absence of an association between insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and developmental learning difficulties.

For several years, investigators have been examining the relationship between learning difficulties and a variety of immunological disorders. Two recent studies by Hansen and colleagues reported a negative association between Type 1 diabetes and reading disabilities (dyslexia): subjects with Type 1 diabetes had a lower prevalence of dyslexia than their nondiabetic relatives. In order to control for the impact of environmental variables on learning, we investigated the relationship between Type 1 diabetes and learning problems in 27 sibling pairs, ranging in age from 6 to 20 years. The ventral tegmental area dopamine to lateral amygdala projection supports cocaine cue associative learning.

Learning and memory mechanisms are critically involved in drug craving and relapse. Environmental cues paired with repeated drug use acquire incentive value such that exposure to the cues alone can trigger craving and relapse. The amygdala, particularly the lateral amygdala (LA), underlies cue-related learning processes that assign valence to environmental stimuli including drug-paired cues. Evidence suggests that the ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine (DA) projection to the LA participates in encoding reinforcing effects that act as a US in conditioned cue reward-seeking as DA released in

ImmunoMatch learns and predicts cognate pairing of heavy and light immunoglobulin chains.

The development of stable antibodies formed by compatible heavy (H) and light (L) chain pairs is crucial in both in vivo maturation of antibody-producing cells and ex vivo designs of therapeutic antibodies. We present ImmunoMatch, a machine-learning framework trained on paired H and L sequences from human B cells to identify molecular features underlying chain compatibility. ImmunoMatch distinguishes cognate from random H-L pairs and captures differences associated with κ and λ light chains, reflecting B cell selection mechanisms in the bone marrow. We apply ImmunoMatch to reconstruct paired a
