Educational impact of peer-intervention on the knowledge and attitudes about HIV/AIDS in adolescents in Panama.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitudes, and practices about HIV/AIDS of high school students in Panama City, Panama and the impact of a peer-to-peer intervention project. METHODS: There were 659 participants in two public and two private schools, one of each got the intervention and the other serving as control. A questionnaire was used as a pretest and post-test to measure the effects of the intervention. The intervention consisted of 12 weekly sessions led by professionally trained peers using four different modalities: theater, group dynamics, videos

Improving outcomes of transported newborns in Panama: impact of a nationwide neonatal provider education program.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether national distribution of a neonatal provider education program (the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program) positively impacts the health of ill newborns that require transport in Panama. STUDY DESIGN: The investigation used a prospective, pre- and postintervention study design with a double pretest. The 10 birthing centers in Panama that routinely transport the greatest number of newborns received the education program intervention. Primary outcomes were body temperature and serum glucose level on arrival at the referral facility. Length of stay and mortality were evaluated as

Crossing Language Barriers: Treating Chronic Low Back Pain in Panama With the Fascial Distortion Model.

The fascial distortion model (FDM) is an anatomical perspective and treatment technique within the discipline of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT). The FDM is unique in that it elucidates a set of common gestures and body language for each of the six recognized FDM distortions. Fascia not only surrounds structures but also links them, transmitting mechanical forces throughout the body in a continuous three-dimensional network. Dysfunction within this system, whether local or distant, can contribute to distinct patterns of body morphology. Although fascial anatomy provides a framework fo

Expanding the spectrum of oropouche virus neurological disease: emerging evidence from the 2025 Panama outbreak.

Oropouche virus is an emerging arbovirus whose neurotropic potential is increasingly recognized across the Americas. During the 2024-2025 outbreak in Panama, we identified six patients with confirmed or probable infection who developed a broad range of neurological manifestations. Neurological symptoms arose several days after the onset of systemic illness and included ocular motor disturbances such as nystagmus and opsoclonus, cerebellar signs including ataxia and vertigo, seizures, altered mental status, and meningeal irritation. Cerebrospinal fluid analyses frequently demonstrated mononucle

Venezuelan equine encephalitis in Panama: fatal endemic disease and genetic diversity of etiologic viral strains.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) is a reemerging, mosquito-borne viral disease of the neotropics that is severely debilitating and sometimes fatal to humans. Periodic epidemics mediated by equine amplification have been recognized since the 1920s, but interepidemic disease is rarely recognized. We report here clinical findings and genetic characterization of 42 cases of endemic VEE detected in Panama from 1961-2004. Recent clusters of cases occurred in Darien (eastern Panama) and Panama provinces (central Panama) near rainforest and swamp habitats. Patients ranged from 10 months to 48 year

Identification and genetic analysis of Panama-genotype Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus subtype ID in Peru.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) virus was isolated in 1993, 1994, and 1995 from human cases of acute, undifferentiated, febrile illness in the Peruvian Amazon Basin. Two virus isolates were recovered in 1994 from Peruvian soldiers at a jungle outpost near Pantoja in northern Peru, and 10 isolates were obtained from military personnel and civilians in 1993-1995 in Iquitos, an urban center in northeastern Peru. The genetic relationship of these isolates to other VEE virus strains was determined by sequencing 856-867 nucleotide reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction fragments derive

Relation between human T-lymphotropic virus type I and neurologic diseases in Panama: 1985-1990.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is endemic in the Caribbean basin and in Japan. HTLV-II, a closely related virus, is endemic in several groups of native Americans, including Panamanian Guaymi. In Panama, a nationwide HTLV-I/II seroprevalence of 1-2% has been reported. We evaluated the frequency of HTLV-I/II infection in patients with neurologic diseases admitted to state tertiary hospitals in Panama City between 1985 and 1990. Nineteen of 322 patients with eligible diagnoses had antibodies to HTLV-I/II, 17 with HTLV-I and 2 with HTLV-II. HTLV-I was associated with spastic parap

First report of imported canine visceral leishmaniasis cases in Panama, Central America: Public health implications.

According to the last leishmaniasis report from the Pan American Health Organization (2021) so far Panama is considered free of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Although the presence of potential vectors and reservoirs involved in the VL transmission cycle have been described in some rural regions of the country, no cases have been reported in humans and domestic or wild animals. Dogs play an important role in the urban transmission of VL; therefore, it is important to detect possible cases of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in the country. In this sense, this study reports for the first time t

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I and neurologic disease in Panama, 1985 and 1986.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) causes adult T-cell leukemia and has recently been associated with HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis. The HTLV-I is endemic throughout the Caribbean basin and parts of South America, and HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis also seems to be common in this area. This 2-year study, 1985 and 1986, was designed to evaluate the occurrence of HTLV-I infection in all newly diagnosed cases of selected neurologic diseases in Panama City, Panama. Six (8%) of 71 patients had antibody to HTLV-I detected by immunofluor

A feasibility pilot study on the effects of a combined cognitive and physical intervention program in older adults in Panama.

INTRODUCTION: Latin America and the Caribbean are experiencing rapid population aging, accompanied by rising dementia prevalence. Risk is heightened by social inequalities, low education, and limited healthcare resources. While pharmacological treatments for dementia prevention offer only modest benefits, non-pharmacological multimodal interventions have shown promise for maintaining cognition. However, such programs have not yet been evaluated in Panama. This pilot study examined the feasibility and effects of a multimodal physical and cognitive intervention program on cognition, depressive s

The "controlled flow" migration strategy and regimes of humanitarian care for people "in transit" through Darién, Panama.

Since 2021, over one million people have traveled on foot across the Darién border region separating Panama and Colombia en route to the U.S.-Mexico border. Extreme physical conditions of the route, crossing rivers and mountains through the Darién Forest, present lethal vulnerabilities to violence and impacts on migrant health. As migration across Darién has increased and diversified, complex medical emergencies, including migrant death, sexual violence, and injury, present critical areas for social service response. Since 2016, the Panamanian State has implemented the "controlled flow" migrat

Incidence of respiratory virus illness and hospitalizations in a Panama and El Salvador birth cohort, 2014-2018.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory viruses remain a key cause of early childhood illness, hospitalization, and death globally. The recent pandemic has rekindled interest in the control of respiratory viruses among paediatric populations. We estimate the burden of such viruses among children <2 years. METHODS: Enrolled neonates were followed until two years of age. Weekly active symptom monitoring for the development of acute respiratory illnesses (ARI) defined as cough, rhinorrhoea, difficulty breathing, asthenia, anorexia, irritability, or vomiting was conducted. When the child had ARI and fever, nasoph

Microbiological and genomic investigations of invasive Salmonella enterica serovar Panama from a large outbreak in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Salmonella Panama was considered an invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella (iNTS) serovar. Comprehensive clinical, microbiological, and genomic studies on S. Panama are scarce. We aimed to characterize the clinical and microbiological characteristics of S. Panama infection. Virulence mechanism of S. Panama and other iNTS serovars were also examined. METHODS: Based on data from the longitudinal surveillance system for Salmonella deployed in Taiwan since 2004, a case-control study was undertaken to evaluate clinical characteristics of S. Panama infection during an outbreak in 201

Landfill reactions to society actions: The case of local and global air pollutants of Cerro Patacón in Panama.

This paper studies landfill emissions and the related environmental and health risks in Panama City, with the aim to sensitize the population about the harmful effects of irresponsible resource consumption and non-deliberate solid waste generation that it is disposed of in an uncontrolled manner in landfills. Empirical data on Cerro Patacón, Panama City's landfill was obtained to describe the status of municipal waste disposal. Ten known methane generation models were used to estimate the yearly emission rate of methane from the landfill for a 100-year period starting from its inception in 198

Evaluation of serological assays based on a novel excreted antigen preparation for the diagnosis of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Panama.

The objective of the present study was to determine the efficacy of prototype diagnostic serological assays for American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) in Panama. As such, we prospectively sampled 100 cutaneous leishmaniasis case-patients and tested their sera in two serological assays based upon novel soluble antigen preparations made from propagating the parasites in a protein-free, serum free media. Using serum and a Leishmania mexicana antigen preparation to sensitize plates, the assay correctly identified 89% of the case-patients. While using serum with an antigen preparation from Leishman

Epidemiological patterns of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Panama. II. Incidental occurrence of cases in non-endemic settlements.

Epidemiological studies on cutaneous leishmaniasis were carried out in a settlement in the Bayano region, Republic of Panama, during 1971-72. This settlement was established about 12 years earlier for the purpose of cattle raising by small groups of settlers. The primary forest was cut and cleared and the area planted with grass. The presence of active cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis among humans and animals, both domestic and ferals, was investigated. In addition, phlebotomine sandflies were collected to determine their species composition. In 1971, nine of the 161 persons interviewed had ac

Molecular phylogeny of Boninia (Platyhelminthes: Polycladida), with description of a new species from the Pacific coasts of Panama.

Mesopsammic polyclad members in the family Boniniidae have attracted attention in terms of their evolutionary shifts of microhabitat and their unique morphology such as a pair of pointed tentacles extending from the anterolateral margins and prostatoid organs harbouring stylets. Here, we establish a new species of this family as Boninia panamensis sp. nov. from the Pacific coasts of Panama, based on its morphological characteristics of (i) four cerebral and 61-80 marginal eyespots, (ii) two prostatoid organs located anterior and posterior to the penis papilla, and (iii) two uterine canals depa
