This study presents 12 patients (7 women and 5 men) with vitamin B(12)-responsive pancytopenia who had discordant laboratory findings and were misdiagnosed as having myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). The median hemoglobin level was 6.5 g/dl, and the leukocyte and platelet counts were 2.85 × 10(9)/l and 55.5 × 10(9)/l, respectively. The median serum lactate dehydrogenase level was high (3,204.5 IU/l). The serum vitamin B(12) levels were within normal limits at the initial evaluation, but a serial follow-up of the vitamin B(12) levels revealed either fluctuations or a gradual decrease. The patient

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 71-year-old woman had suffered for 6 weeks from fatigue, dry cough and fever. Five years previously breast cancer had been diagnosed and had been successfully treated with subtotal mastectomy and postoperative radiotherapy, as well as aromatase inhibitor until shortly before the present admission. There was no history of travel to tropical countries, but during the last summer she had spent two weeks in Northern Italy. [corrected]
INVESTIGATIONS: On admission the body temperature was 38,5 C with a mild tachycardia (108/min). Laboratory findings revealed a panc

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of reference of congenital toxoplasmosis combines two folate synthesis inhibitors, pyrimethamine and an antibacterial sulfamide (sulfadiazine or sulfadoxine). Despite the efficacy of this combination, the possibility of eventually severe side effects must also be taken into account.
OBSERVATION: A pancytopenia occurred at 37 weeks of amenorrhea during antenatal treatment for congenital toxoplasmosis in a tripara. The outcome was positive following administration of strong doses of parenteral folinic acid combined with platelet transfusion and broad-spectrum antibio

Viral-associated haemophagocyte syndrome in response to infection with human parvovirus B19 was seen in 2 patients with hereditary spherocytosis. Depressed reticulocyte response during acute parvovirus infection is a known cause of hypoproliferative crises in patients with reduced erythrocyte lifespan; the observation of parvovirus-associated haemophagocytosis could account for the pancytopenia that may accompany human parvovirus B19 infection.

INTRODUCTION: Pancytopenia is a common hematological problem characterized by anemia, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia. It can be a serious and life-threatening illness.
AIM: The objective of this study is to study the clinical presentation and hematological profile in pancytopenia patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The prospective study was done on 50 pancytopenia patients in a tertiary care hospital and the hematological profile was studied. All the cases with hemoglobin [Hb] less than 13 gm/dL in male and female <12 g/dL, total leukocyte count [TLC] less than 4000/cumm, and platelet count le

Pancytopenia is caused by impaired production and peripheral destruction of blood cells, leading to decreased levels of red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. The etiologies can be classified as reversible and irreversible causes. One of the reversible causes is Vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause various types of manifestations, including hematologic as well as neurological symptoms, and sometimes mimicking serious hematologic conditions. A 46-year-old male presented with generalized body weakness, easy fatigability, and occasional nausea with vo

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare and unusual hypersensitivity reaction to certain drugs like allopurinol, commonly used for treating gout. SJS is recognized by extensive necrosis and detachment of skin and mucus membranes. Pancytopenia, characterized by decreased levels of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, is an exceedingly rare occurrence in the rare disorder SJS.
CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a 61-year-old male who exhibited symptoms of fever and rash for 5 days accompanied by pancytopenia and liver injury.
CLINICAL DISCUSSION:

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 (cobalamin CBL) is a water-soluble vitamin required to form hematopoietic cells (red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets). It is involved in the process of synthesizing DNA and myelin sheath. Deficiencies of vitamin B12 and/or folate can cause megaloblastic anemia (macrocytic anemia with other features due to impaired cell division). Pancytopenia is a less frequent exordium of severe vitamin B12 deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency can also cause neuropsychiatric findings. In addition to correcting the deficiency, an essential aspect of management is determining

COVID-19 causes not only acute but also subacute medical conditions during the clinical course. COVID-19 causes severe inflammatory conditions; therefore, patients may develop long-term complications. Among patients with acute COVID-19, some patients can experience persistent symptoms, such as fatigue, joint pain, and smell and taste abnormalities, known as the long COVID-19 syndrome. The symptoms can be severe and require continuous medical care. Patients with severe clinical courses of COVID-19 may have critical symptoms again after the cure of the acute infections, especially among older pa

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid glands which often results in enlarged thyroid glands, and it is the most common cause of clinical hyperthyroidism especially in young patients. Radioiodine ablation is a radiation therapy in which radioactive iodine is administered to destroy or ablate thyroid cells. It is commonly used for the treatment of Graves' disease. We report on a 39-year-old male, who presented with Graves' disease, found to have pancytopenia and hypocellular bone marrow. Pancytopenia is a rare complication of thyrotoxicosis that is usually not severe

AIM: Methotrexate (MTX) has the potential to cause serious adverse reactions and even mortality. We analyzed the predisposing factors and outcome in patients with MTX-induced pancytopenia admitted into our unit from 1996 to 2015.
METHODS: Patients were identified by departmental database search. Pancytopenia was defined as white blood cell count (WBC) < 3500 cells/mm3 , hemoglobin (Hb) < 11 g/dL and platelet count < 150 000 cells/mm3 . Severe pancytopenia was defined as WBC < 2000 cells/mm3 , Hb < 10 g/dL and platelet count < 50 000 cells/mm3 .
RESULTS: Forty-six patients were included in th

Although maternal vaccination is generally considered to be safe, the occurrence of Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia (BNP) in cattle shows that maternal vaccination may pose a risk to the offspring. Pregsure BVD-induced maternal alloantibodies cause BNP in newborn calves. The occurrence of BNP years after last Pregsure BVD vaccination indicates that alloantibody levels may remain high in dams. Since pregnancy induces alloantibodies we hypothesized that pregnancy boosts the vaccine-induced alloantibody response. Alloantibody levels in Pregsure BVD-vaccinated dams increased from conception towards t

INTRODUCTION: The macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), also known as haemophagacytosis, is a non-specific clinical syndrome, which includes, among other things general debility, fever and hepatospleneomegaly. The most frequent pathological abnormalities are pancytopenia, hypertryglyceraemia, and hyperferrititinaemia. These clinical and biological criteria, which determine the severity of MAS, must be associated with a histological criterion - haemophagocytosis (with histiocytosis), which is usually medullary but can more rarely be splenic, hepatic or ganglionic. MAS can be primary or secondar

Neonatal lupus erythematosus is an immune-mediated disease associated with the transplacental passage of maternal autoantibodies, primarily anti-Ro (SS-A) and anti-La (SS-B). The major clinical manifestations are isolated congenital heart block and cutaneous lupus lesions. Other symptoms include hematologic and hepatic abnormalities. We report a male neonate, born to a mother with Sjögren's syndrome, who experienced cutaneous lupus lesions and 2 episodes of pancytopenia. Both anti-Ro and anti-La antibodies were positive in infant and mother.

Ticlopidine is an antiplatelet agent that has been proven efficacious in preventing vascular events in patients with a history of vasculopathy. Neutropenia is a significant adverse effect and pancytopenia is rarely reported. A fatal case of pancytopenia associated with unmonitored use of ticlopidine is presented. A 59-year-old woman presented with severe pneumonia and profound neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count 0%). She deteriorated with development of acute respiratory distress syndrome and a marked reduction in trilineage hematopoiesis. Despite prompt marrow response to granulocyte macro
