Degenerative spinal disease in large felids.

Degenerative spinal disorders, including intervertebral disc disease and spondylosis, seldom occur in domestic cats. In contrast, a retrospective study of 13 lions (Panthera leo), 16 tigers (Panthera tigris), 4 leopards (Panthera pardis), 1 snow leopard (Panthera uncia), and 3 jaguars (Panthera onca) from the Knoxville Zoo that died or were euthanatized from 1976 to 1996 indicated that degenerative spinal disease is an important problem in large nondomestic felids. The medical record, radiographic data, and the necropsy report of each animal were examined for evidence of intervertebral disc di

PANTHERA "Pelvic Floor Disorders in Patients Under ANtineoplastic THERApy" Prospective Evaluation of Subjectively Perceived Pelvic Floor Function in Patients with Gynecologic and Breast Cancers Undergoing Systemic Antineoplastic Therapy Using a Validated Pelvic Floor Questionnaire.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: With increasing cancer survival rates, long-term sequelae of oncological therapies on the pelvic floor-including bladder, bowel, sexual dysfunction, and pelvic organ prolapse-have gained clinical relevance. The PANTHERA study evaluates the impact of systemic antineoplastic therapy on pelvic floor function (PFF) in women with breast and gynecological malignancies. METHODS: This prospective observational study enrolled 201 patients with histologically confirmed breast or gynecological cancers undergoing systemic therapy. PFF was assessed using the validated German P

MitoNumt: A Workflow for Recovering Mitochondrial Genomes From Long-Read Data and Detecting NUMT Contamination in Mitochondrial Genome Assemblies.

Nuclear mitochondrial DNA segments (NUMTs) are genomic DNA fragments that originate from historical insertions of mitochondrial DNA sequences into the nuclear genome. During mitochondrial genome (mtgenome) assembly from short-read genome sequencing data, NUMT fragments may be misidentified and incorporated into mtgenome assemblies, leading to NUMT contamination. Although some assembly programs include steps to filter NUMTs, these approaches are not always effective. Here, we present MitoNumt, a multifunctional workflow. Using this pipeline, we recovered mtgenomes, complete NUMT (coexistence wi

FELINE CORONAVIRUS AND FELINE INFECTIOUS PERITONITIS IN NONDOMESTIC FELID SPECIES.

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is reported worldwide and known to cause disease in domestic and nondomestic felid species. Although FCoV often results in mild to inapparent disease, a small subset of cats succumb to the fatal, systemic disease feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). An outbreak of FIP in Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) in a zoological collection demonstrated the devastating effect of FCoV introduction into a naïve group of animals. In addition to cheetahs, FIP has been described in European wildcats (Felis silvestris), a tiger (Panthera tigris), a mountain lion (Puma concolor), and lion (

A non-surgical uterine lavage technique in large cats intended for treatment of uterine infection-induced infertility.

This paper presents the successful use of a non-surgical, transcervical uterine lavage technique for the treatment of uterine infection-induced infertility in three female large cats. We developed a non-surgical uterine lavage technique, which allowed repeated flushing of the uterine lumen and installation of therapeutic antibiotics. The entire procedure was performed under general anaesthesia (duration of anesthesia ranged from 40 to 70 min). It was successfully applied in a Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), a Corbett tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti) and an Amur leopard (Panthera par

Isolation of Bartonella henselae, Bartonella koehlerae subsp. koehlerae, Bartonella koehlerae subsp. bothieri and a new subspecies of B. koehlerae from free-ranging lions (Panthera leo) from South Africa, cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) from Namibia and captive cheetahs from California.

Bartonellae are blood- and vector-borne Gram-negative bacteria, recognized as emerging pathogens. Whole-blood samples were collected from 58 free-ranging lions (Panthera leo) in South Africa and 17 cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) from Namibia. Blood samples were also collected from 11 cheetahs (more than once for some of them) at the San Diego Wildlife Safari Park. Bacteria were isolated from the blood of three (5%) lions, one (6%) Namibian cheetah and eight (73%) cheetahs from California. The lion Bartonella isolates were identified as B. henselae (two isolates) and B. koehlerae subsp. koehlerae.

Can school children influence adults' behavior toward jaguars? Evidence of intergenerational learning in education for conservation.

A school-based experiment was conducted in the Brazilian Amazon to examine the effects of passively received information versus active elaboration on the 'perceptions' of jaguars (Panthera onca) among students, and the effects of information communicated via illustrated book on those perceptions among student's parents. Books distributed via school decreased fathers' perceptions of social acceptance of jaguar killing, but the same books distributed via a conservation organization did not. This suggests that fathers were influenced not only by the information explicitly conveyed in the content

Trichinella nelsoni in carnivores from the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania.

A survey of trichinellosis among sylvatic carnivore mammals from the Serengeti ecosystem (Tanzania) demonstrated the presence of Trichinella nelsoni in 5 of 9 species examined. Muscle samples were collected from carcasses of 56 carnivores from 1993 to 1995 and frozen before transport and examination. Following artificial digestion of the samples, collected larvae were analyzed by the random amplified polymorphic DNA technique. Trichinella nelsoni was identified in 1 bat-eared fox (Otocyon megalotis), 1 cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), 1 leopard (Panthera pardus), 3 lions (Panthera leo), and 3 spott

Feline herpesvirus infection and pathology in captive snow leopard.

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) is a common causative agent of domestic cats' rhinotracheitis in domestic cats, and it increasingly threatens wild felids worldwide. The endangered snow leopard (Panthera uncia) belongs to the family Felidae, and it is the top predator on the Tibetan Plateau. Here we report the identification and isolation of FHV-1 from three dead captive snow leopards that presented with sneezing and rhinorrhea. To explore the relationship between FHV-1 and their deaths, organs and nasal swabs were collected for histopathology, viral isolation and sequence analysis. The resul

Systemic amyloidosis derived from EFEMP1 in a captive Tsushima leopard cat.

In animals, most cases of systemic amyloidosis are of amyloid A type, and the other types of systemic amyloidoses are rare. This study analyzed systemic amyloidosis in a 15-year-old female Tsushima leopard cat. Amyloid deposits strongly positive for Congo red staining were observed in the arterial walls as well as the interstitium in multiple organs. Mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis with laser microdissection of amyloid deposits identified epidermal growth factor-containing fibulin-like extracellular matrix protein 1 (EFEMP1) as a prime amyloidogenic protein candidate. Identifying priority landscapes for conservation of snow leopards in Pakistan.

Pakistan's total estimated snow leopard habitat is about 80,000 km2 of which about half is considered prime habitat. However, this preliminary demarcation was not always in close agreement with the actual distribution-the discrepancy may be huge at the local and regional level. Recent technological developments like camera trapping and molecular genetics allow for collecting reliable presence records that could be used to construct realistic species distribution based on empirical data and advanced mathematical approaches like MaxEnt. The current study followed this approach to construct an ac
