BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia consistently show deficits in facial affect perception and social behaviours. It is illusive to suggest that these deficits in facial affect perception cause poor social behaviours.
AIM: The present research aims to study how facial affects influence ingratiation, cooperation and punishment behaviours of the patients.
METHODS: Forty outpatients with paranoid schizophrenia, 26 matched depressed patients and 46 healthy volunteers were recruited. After measurement of clinical symptoms and depression, their facial emotion recognition, neurocognitive functi

The beneficial effect of clozapine on polydipsia and water intoxication in patients with schizophrenia has been demonstrated many times. The authors report a successful clozapine treatment of polydipsia, intermittent water intoxication, and delusional jealousy of an alcoholic. This is a rare case of clozapine treatment of a non-schizophrenic patient affected by polydipsia.

Fifty-two patients with reactive states were studied for specific features of their motor disorders. The clinical follow-up data were supplemented by electromyographic examinations. The motor pathology was shown to be characterized by polymorphism and marked atypical nature. It was revealed that under conditions of considerable functional disintegration of the cerebral motor systems, the motor pathology observed was similar to that seen with organic brain diseases.

Myxedema psychosis is uncommon in patients with primary hypothyroidism. Most often, this disease state can be found in patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis or after total thyroidectomy. Chronic hypothyroidism can lead to an insidious onset of psychiatric symptoms in patients, such as dementia, delirium, psychosis, hallucinations, and coma. A 31-year-old man with an unremarkable medical history was brought to the psychiatric emergency department for new-onset aggression, paranoid behavior, and hallucinations for 4 days. Initial test results showed a thyroid-stimulating hormone level of 306.0 mIU

Increases in emergency room visits due to abuse of designer drugs, popularly known by the street names "K2" and "Spice," are a cause for social, judicial, and clinical concerns. The psychoactive components in these herbal drugs mainly consist of different synthetic cannabinoids, and users of these street drugs are primarily within the age group of 12 to 20years old. The abusive use of synthetic cannabinoids results in anxiety, nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, elevated blood pressure, tremors, seizures, hallucinations, and paranoid behavior, but the effects of maternal use of synthetic cannabinoi

Some people who repeatedly use stimulant drugs, such as amphetamine (AMPH), develop an AMPH-induced psychosis that is similar to paranoid schizophrenia. There has been, therefore, considerable interest in characterizing the effects of chronic stimulant drug treatment on brain and behavior in non-human animals, and in developing an animal model of AMPH psychosis. A review of this literature shows that in non-human animals chronic AMPH treatment can produce at least two different syndromes, and both of these have been proposed as animal models of AMPH psychosis. The first syndrome is called 'AMP

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the risk factors associated with violent behavior in female patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS: A total of 85 female patients with schizophrenia were assessed using the Modified Over Aggression Scale (MOAS), the Positive and Negative Symptoms Scale (PANSS), the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), and the Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R). Based on their MOAS scores, patients were divided into non-violent and violent groups. Univariate analysis and binary logistic regression were conducted to identify the risk factors for aggressive behavior.
RESULTS: Violent

Background: Childhood abuse and neglect increase the risk of both mental disorders and violent behavior. Associations between child relational adversities and violent behavior have not been extensively investigated in forensic mental health settings. We asked whether the extent of child adversities predicts the extent of violence in the community in forensic mental health patients. Methods: We included 52 male patients at a medium security forensic mental health ward, with diagnoses of predominantly paranoid schizophrenia and other schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. Seventy-five percent ha

BACKGROUND: The relationship between neurocognition and symptomatology in people with schizophrenia has been established. The present study examined whether social cognition could mediate this relationship.
METHODS: There were 119 participants (58 people with paranoid schizophrenia and 61 healthy controls) participated in this study. Neurocognition was assessed by Raven's Progressive Matrices Test, the Judgment of Line Orientation Test, and the Tower of London Test. Psychiatric symptoms in people with schizophrenia were assessed by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Social cognition wa

Many theories have been proposed to help understand delusional misidentification syndromes (DMS) and the danger associated with them. We report on three cases with histories of paranoid schizophrenia who developed DMS. Two of them acted out on delusional thinking toward their sons. Case 1 managed to kill her son and Case 2 was caught twice trying to choke him. Our case reports suggest that the degree of threat perceived by the patient from the delusionally misidentified object is the most important factor in determining the patient's response to the delusions. OBJECTIVE: To report a case of rhabdomyolysis related to rapid correction of hyponatremia attributable to compulsive drinking of water, possible complicated by clozapine use.
CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old white man treated with clozapine for schizophrenia was admitted for a generalized seizure. Marked hyponatremia due to psychogenic polydipsia was present. He developed a marked elevation of creatine kinase concentrations after correction of hyponatremia with hyperosmolar sodium solution, without clinical signs of rhabdomyolysis.
DISCUSSION: Rhabdomyolysis associated with hyponatremia due to wa

This paper uses a case from the Micronesian Island of Yap to illustrate that indicators of improvement from an episode of schizophrenic psychosis can vary tremendously from culture to culture. At times, the clinician must search diligently for such indicators since the patient will not verbalize any perception of improvement. A 39-year-old Yapese woman was evaluated by a psychiatrist and was found to have been psychotic for several years, suffering from gross delusions, and auditory hallucinations, flattened affect, and social isolation. In addition, she had discontinued chewing betel nut that

Introduction. Delusional disorders are characterised by monothematic, "encapsulated" and incorrigible false beliefs and misinterpretations of social signals. Due to the rarity of cases with "pure" delusional disorder (DD) in clinical settings most studies of social cognition in delusional patients have focused on patients with paranoid schizophrenia. In the present study we sought to examine emotion recognition, theory of mind abilities, and pragmatic language comprehension in patients with delusional disorder. Methods. Social cognition was assessed in 21 patients recruited over a 3-year perio

Previous research suggests that socially anxious individuals interpret ambiguous social information in a more threatening manner compared to non-anxious individuals. Recently, studies have experimentally modified interpretation and shown that this subsequently affected anxiety in non-anxious individuals. If similar procedures can modify interpretation biases in socially anxious individuals, they may lead to a reduction in social anxiety symptoms. In the current study, we examined the effect of a computerized Interpretation Modification Program (IMP) on interpretation bias and social anxiety sy

Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly used for emotional support, companionship, and psychological reflection. Their capacity to simulate attentiveness, empathy, and conversational continuity may shift technology use from instrumental interaction toward relational engagement. Emerging clinical observations suggest that intensive chatbot use may, in vulnerable individuals, contribute to psychiatric destabilization, including reinforcement of maladaptive beliefs and, in rare cases, psychotic symptoms. This viewpoint proposes that conversational AI engagement can b

The specialized field of forensic psychiatry deals with the care of criminal offenders who suffer from severe mental disorders. As this field is positioned at the intersection of illness, crime, and security, it poses complex challenges. While high-quality clinical studies in forensic psychiatry settings are limited, recent investigations have suggested yoga as a complementary clinical tool within correctional environments. This report of a quasi-experimental study examines the impact of a 10-week trauma-adapted yoga intervention on mental health, antisocial and aggressive behaviors, pain perc
