[A case of acute cholinergic dysautonomia].

A 52-year-old man with hypohidrosis and selective parasympathetic peripheral autonomic nerve disturbances of acute onset is described. In April 1991, he noted a feeling of dryness in the eyes and the oral cavity, disturbance of taste, difficulty in micturition and a feeling of dryness at the distal extremities with acute onset, which were followed by alternating diarrhea and constipation. Clinical and laboratory autonomic examinations revealed decreased sweating in the distal extremities, decreased lacrimation and salivation, a decrease in the average urinary flow with residual urine and hyper

Influence of physical post-exercise recovery techniques on vagally-mediated heart rate variability: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

In sports, physical recovery following exercise-induced fatigue is mediated via the reactivation of the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). A noninvasive way to quantify the reactivation of the PNS is to assess vagally-mediated heart rate variability (vmHRV), which can then be used as an index of physical recovery. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effects of physical recovery techniques following exercise-induced fatigue on vmHRV, specifically via the root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD). Randomized controlled trials from the databases PubMed, WebOfScie

Upstream effect of esophageal distention: effect on airway.

The pharyngoesophageal segment of the foregut has an important function in steering clear of luminal contents from the airway, across the age spectrum from a premature neonate to an aging adult. This complex neuromuscular interaction between the esophagus and the airway is maintained by a variety of mechanisms mediated by the parasympathetic and sympathetic afferent and efferent outflows involving the myenteric plexus, glossopharyngeal and vagus cranial nerves, phrenic nerve, and brainstem nuclei. The esophageal provocation during gastroesophageal reflux events results in esophageal distention

Clinical aspects of sympathetic activation and parasympathetic withdrawal in heart failure.

Proposed reflex mechanisms for generalized neurohumoral activation in heart failure include decreased input from inhibitory baroreceptor afferent vessels and increased input from excitatory afferent vessels arising from arterial chemoreceptors, skeletal muscle metaboreceptors or the lungs. Not all subjects with left ventricular dysfunction have increased sympathetic nerve activity, but the magnitude of sympathoneural activation appears to independently predict survival. This association suggests both a causative mechanism linking sympathetic activation with adverse outcome and a therapeutic op

Sensory, parasympathetic, and sympathetic neural influences in the nasal mucosa.

Neural mechanisms contribute to many nasal symptoms and syndromes. Sensory nerve stimulation by irritants, mast cell products, and inflammatory mediators leads to sneezing and other systemic reflexes. Parasympathetic reflexes and sensory axon responses combine to increase nasal blood flow, fill venous sinusoids (which thickens the mucosa and reduces nasal patency), induce plasma extravasation, and stimulate glandular secretion of mucous and serous cell products. These putative roles for nerves and neuropeptides in pathologic events open new therapeutic avenues. Anticholinergic agents, peptide

Intensity of motion sickness symptoms as a function of apparent autonomic balance.

Twenty volunteer male college students were exposed to motion picture films which reliably elicit symptoms of motion sickness. Those Ss with relatively higher apparent sympathetic nervous system dominance showed significantly smaller autonomic reactions to the film. It was concluded that increased sympathetic tone tended to the film. It was concluded that increased sympathetic tone tended to reduce autonomic reactions to motion sickness stimuli. It was suggested that the sympathetic nervous system symptoms that usually occur in motion sickness are actually defensive reactions rather than sympt

Apical left ventricular aneurysms and cardiac parasympathetic innervation in Chagas' heart disease.

Left ventricular apical aneurysms are present in Chagasic patients who have normal cardiac parasympathetic innervation. Cardiac parasympathetic abnormalities are found, in later stages of the disease, when diffuse myocardial damage and ventricular dilatation are already present. The apical region of the left ventricle is also affected in several acute and chronic non-Chagasic cardiac diseases. Therefore, thinning of the left ventricular apex, with aneurysm formation, may be a non-specific myocardial sequelae, secondary to myocardial damage.

Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia and Hierarchical Dimensions of Psychopathology.

Lower resting respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), a psychophysiological index of parasympathetic nervous system functioning, has been linked to internalizing, externalizing, and thought disorders. Consistent with the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP), these findings suggest lower RSA may be associated with general psychopathology (i.e., p-factor). In a sample of 215 18-36-year-olds oversampled for psychopathology, the present study utilized higher-order mediation modeling to examine associations between RSA and psychopathology at the p-factor and spectra levels, using both categ

The Autonomic Nervous System and Hypertension: Ethnic Differences and Psychosocial Factors.

PURPOSE OF THE REVIEW: In the present paper, we overview emerging research examining the autonomic nervous system (ANS), especially the parasympathetic nervous system as indexed by heart rate variability (HRV), and the impact of psychosocial factors on hypertension-related disease in African Americans. RECENT FINDINGS: A growing corpus of studies has shown that (1) usual patterns of compensatory sympathetic-parasympathetic regulation differ between African Americans and European Americans; (2) despite their enhanced cardiovascular disease risk profile, African Americans tend to exhibit higher

Cholinergic Modulation of Type 2 Immune Responses.

In recent years, the bidirectional relationship between the nervous and immune system has become increasingly clear, and its role in both homeostasis and inflammation has been well documented over the years. Since the introduction of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway, there has been an increased interest in parasympathetic regulation of both innate and adaptive immune responses, including T helper 2 responses. Increasing evidence has been emerging suggesting a role for the parasympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology of allergic diseases, including allergic rhinitis, asthma, f

Central nervous system plus autonomic nervous system disorders responsible for gastrointestinal and pancreatobiliary diseases.

Clinical digestive disorders depend on the non-adequate coupling of functioning of the gastrointestinal tract with that of its affluent systems, namely, the pancreatic exocrine and the hepato-biliary secretions. The secretion of gastrointestinal hormones is monitored by the peripheral autonomic nervous system. However, the latter is regulated by the central nervous system (CNS) circuitry localized at the medullary pontine segment of the CNS. In turn, both parasympathetic and adrenergic medullary circuitries are regulated by the pontine A5 noradrenergic (NA) and the dorsal raphe serotonergic nu

[Special features of autonomic regulation in patients with seasonal depression].

Parameters of histograms distribution of ECG R-R intervals (the mode, mode amplitude, variation range) were compared in 60 healthy individuals and 45 patients with seasonal depressions. These ECG parameters reflect influence of sympathetic and parasympathetic parts of the autonomic nervous system on the rhythms of cardiac contractions. In the period of active development of depressive symptomatology the parameters of histograms in terms of R-R distribution were changed in comparison with the healthy individuals: mode was displaced to the region of the short intervals, the mode amplitude was in

Regulating autonomic nervous system homeostasis improves pulmonary function in rabbits with acute lung injury.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the effects of regulating autonomic nervous system (ANS) homeostasis by inhibiting sympathetic hyperactivity and/or enhancing parasympathetic activity on pulmonary inflammation and functional disturbance. METHODS: An animal model of acute lung injury (ALI) was established in rabbits by an intratracheal injection of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in rabbits. Animals in control groups were received saline or HCl only, and the others received both HCl and followed treatments: vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), intravenous injection of tetrahydroaminoacridine (THA
