[Vaccination in parents of young infants survey].

Since 2004, in France, pertussis booster is recommended in parents of young infants and adults likely to become parents. This recommendation adds to others such as rubella vaccination in unvaccinated or seronegative women and decennial dT-IPV booster. The objective of this study is to evaluate the impact of these recommendations in parents of young infants. Pediatricians had to include parents of infants at the first well-baby visit after birth. Vaccination data were secondary recorded from parent's health record or called upon their memory. Between June and October 2006, 41 pediatricians incl

History of childhood abuse in Portuguese parents.

OBJECTIVE: The study examines the self-reported prevalence of childhood physical and sexual abuse in a large sample of Portuguese parents. METHOD: Nearly 1,000 parents (506 mothers and 426 fathers) were selected through public primary schools from the Northern area of Portugal. All completed the Portuguese version of the Childhood History Questionnaire (CHQ) [Journal of Family Violence 5 (1990) 15]. RESULTS: Results show that the prevalence of abuse was 73%, but more severe physical abuse involving sequelae/injury was reported by 9.5%. Most physical abuses began prior to age 13, with half co

MMR vaccination: answers to some parents' questions.

Following adverse publicity about the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, most parents ask their health visitors, GPs and practice nurses about the risks and benefits. To address parents' concerns and help health professionals answer their questions, the Department of Health has provided information through its agency NHS Immunisation Information. This article contains some of the commonly asked questions together with answers and references.

Children's feet: common worries of parents--1.

Foot health education, e.g. on correctly fitting socks and shoes, should be part of routine child development checks and health interviews from a very young age onwards. Prevention is better than cure! In-toeing is by far the commonest complaint associated with gait. Many of the complaints raised by parents are simply part of normal development.

Health education for parents with special needs.

Working with families with communication and learning difficulties can require health visiting skills other than those taught on the formal health visitor training course, writes Val Rose. She describes how she approached the problems of one such family with a new-born baby, and the resulting design of a simple feed calculator and communication card which enabled parents and professionals to ensure the baby was being adequately nourished.

Recommendations for clinicians based on parents' experiences.

Three mothers of children with severe communication disabilities describe their experiences with speech-language pathologists and the intervention process. The parents were asked open-ended and descriptive questions. Their responses provide valuable insights and direction for professionals interested in working more closely with families of children with disabilities. The mothers describe their role as primary case managers for their children's treatment programs. They identify the type of speech-language pathologist they prefer to work with their child and the professional guidance they find

Challenges of Twin Pregnancy: Helping parents adjust.

Family physicians have an important role in the diagnosis and management of twin pregnancies. Optimal antepartum management begins with early detection. Provision of patient education about the risks of the pregnancy is important. Intrapartum management is dependent on gestation age, placentation, fetal presentation, and fetal well-being. Anticipatory guidance and ongoing support should be provided for postpartum issues, such as breast-feeding and family adjustment.

Rett syndrome: parents' views about specific symptoms.

The International Rett Syndrome Association was founded in the spring of 1984 following the diagnosis of 10-year-old Stacie Hunter. The group began as an attempt to locate other parents of children who had shared the same long and tedious search for a diagnosis. The organization participated in a conference with the John F Kennedy Institute for Handicapped Children in January of 1985, where Dr Rett examined and confirmed 39 girls suspected to have the disorder. It was the first time ever that such a large gathering of Rett syndrome patients was held. The following November, 1985 brought an int

Aspirin and Reye's syndrome--do parents know?

Amid growing concern over the association between aspirin and Reye's syndrome, the Aspirin Foundation has recently mounted a publicity campaign advising against the use of aspirin in children. Of 50 parents questioned at a children's ward of a district general hospital, 46 (92%) had heard of the publicity, 38 via the television. The number of parents who would give aspirin to their child had dropped significantly from 45 before the campaign to five after it (P<0.001); only one parent chose to ignore the advice. The media, particularly television, is again shown to be a potent means of publicit

[Neurotic states in children with epileptic parents].

On the basis of neurological, encephalographic and clinico-anamnestic examinations of 106 children with a family history of epilepsy the authors have specified a group of children (n = 38) suffering from different neurotic disorders which included neurotic ticks, sleep disturbances, affective-shock reactions and signs of asthenization. The role of familial factors in the formation of neurotic states of children is emphasized. The authors consider the time during which the child was exposed to psychotraumatic circumstances and the relationship between the severity of epileptic process in parent

Perinatal complications in offspring of psychotic parents.

The birth records of 78 subjects born to psychotic parents and 72 subjects born to normal parents were studied. No significant differences in the rates of pregnancy and birth complications (PBCs) were found between the offspring of psychotic parents and normal control parents. There were no differences between offspring born to psychotic mothers compared to psychotic fathers. Neither the onset of the parent's illness, nor the mother's age at delivery, nor the sex of the offspring seemed to influence the rate of PBCs. The offspring of chronic schizophrenic mothers and manic-depressive fathers h

Treatment for the parents of feminine boys.

Because extreme boyhood femininity is often a precursor of adult transsexualism, transvestism, and homosexuality, the author recommends early intervention for boys who meet specific behavioral criteria of gender disturbance. It is necessary to involve the parents in such treatment and to deal with the resistances they may have to recognizing and working on the problem as well as problems within the marital relationship that may affect the child's behavior. These boys are remarkably responsive to treatment given between the ages of 5 and 12, becoming more masculine in behavior and more comforta
