Differential roles of polar orbital prefrontal cortex and parietal lobes in logical reasoning with neutral and negative emotional content.

To answer the question of how brain pathology affects reasoning about negative emotional content, we administered a disjunctive logical reasoning task involving arguments with neutral content (e.g. Either there are tigers or women in NYC, but not both; There are no tigers in NYC; There are women in NYC) and emotionally laden content (e.g. Either there are pedophiles or politicians in Texas, but not both; There are politicians in Texas; There are no pedophiles in Texas) to 92 neurological patients with focal lesions to various parts of the brain. What bilateral damage of the superior parietal lobes tells us about visual attention disorders in developmental dyslexia.

Neuroimaging studies have identified the superior parietal lobules bilaterally as the neural substrates of reduced visual attention (VA) span in developmental dyslexia. It remains however unclear whether the VA span deficit and the deficits in temporal and spatial attention shifting also reported in dyslexic children reflect a unitary spatio-temporal deficit of attention - probably linked to general posterior parietal dysfunction- or the dysfunction of distinct attentional systems that relate to different neural substrates. We explored this issue by testing an adult patient, IG, with a specifi

Transcranial alternating current stimulation to the inferior parietal lobe decreases mu suppression to egocentric, but not allocentric hand movements.

Egocentric vs. allocentric perspective during observation of hand movements has been related to self-other differentiation such that movements observed from an egocentric viewpoint have been considered as self-related while movements observed from an allocentric viewpoint have been considered as belonging to someone else. Correlational studies have generally found that egocentric perspective induces greater neurophysiological responses and larger behavioral effects compared to an allocentric perspective. However, recent studies question previous findings by reporting greater (μ) suppression an

Short-Term Internet-Search Training Is Associated with Increased Fractional Anisotropy in the Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus in the Parietal Lobe.

The Internet search engine has become an indispensable tool for many people, yet the ways in which Internet searching may alter brain structure and function is poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the influence of short-term Internet-search "training" on white matter microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). Fifty-nine valid subjects (Experimental group, 43; Control group, 16) completed the whole procedure: pre- DTI scan, 6-day's training and post- DTI scan. Using track-based spatial statistics, we found increased fractional anisotropy in the right superior longitudinal

High-Frequency Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on the Left Parietal Lobe Improves Post-Stroke Memory Impairment: An fNIRS Study.

BACKGROUND: Memory impairment is a prevalent cognitive deficit following stroke, which can significantly impact quality of life and rehabilitation prognosis. Traditional cognitive rehabilitation therapy offers some benefits in improving memory function, its efficacy remains limited. This study investigated the effects of high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) at the left parietal lobe on post-stroke memory impairment. METHODS: A total of 45 patients with post-stroke memory impairment were randomly divided into two groups. The rTMS group underwent 20 Hz rTMS on the

Sex differences in parietal lobe activation among orienteering athletes during a mental rotation task using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

This study used fNIRS to examine sex differences in spatial cognition and brain function in orienteering athletes during mental rotation. Forty-two athletes performed a letter-based mental rotation task while fNIRS data were recorded. After quality control, 33 participants were included. Behavioral performance, brain activation, and brain-behavior relationships were analyzed using t-tests, correlations, and ANCOVA, with FDR correction for multiple comparisons. Males showed higher accuracy than females (83.33% vs. 69.68%, p = 0.039, d = 0.91), but reaction time did not differ (p = 0.228). No si

Altered olfactory adaptation of primary olfactory cortex-hippocampus-parietal lobe in Alzheimer's disease continuum: An olfactory task fMRI study.

Olfactory adaptation, the progressive reduction of neural responses to repeated odor stimulation, is closely linked to cognitive function and is altered in Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, its evolution across biomarker-defined stages and relationship with plasma p-tau217 remain unclear. We studied 168 participants classified by plasma p-tau217: cognitively normal (p-tau217-NC, n = 37; p-tau217+NC, n = 8), subjective cognitive decline (p-tau217-SCD, n = 57; p-tau217+SCD, n = 16), and mild cognitive impairment (p-tau217-MCI, n = 40; p-tau217+MCI, n = 10). Non-perceptual Regions in the Left Inferior Parietal Lobe Support Phonological Short-term Memory: Evidence for a Buffer Account?

Buffer versus embedded processes accounts of short-term memory (STM) for phonological information were addressed by testing subjects' perception and memory for speech and non-speech auditory stimuli. Univariate and multivariate (MVPA) approaches were used to assess whether brain regions recruited in recognizing speech were involved in maintaining speech representations over a delay. As expected, a left superior temporal region was found to support speech perception. However, contrary to the embedded processes approach, this region failed to show a load effect, or any sustained activation, duri

Use of a Novel Intraoperative Neurocognitive Monitoring Task During Awake Craniotomy for Tumor Resection in the Language-Dominant Parietal Lobe.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The identification of eloquent structures in the parietal lobe during awake craniotomy remains challenging, particularly for higher-order functions such as reading, calculation, and sensorimotor integration essential for writing and typing. Our study introduces a novel task as part of intraoperative neurocognitive monitoring (iNM) to enhance real-time assessment during tumor resection. METHODS: We introduced a novel tactile symbol recognition task during iNM to assess sensorimotor function of patients undergoing awake craniotomy at a single-center from January to Fe

Paired associates learning is disrupted after unilateral parietal lobe controlled cortical impact in rats: A trial-by-trial behavioral analysis.

Approximately 60-70 million people suffer from traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year. Animal models continue to be paramount in understanding mechanisms of cellular dysfunction and testing new treatments for TBI. Enhancing the translational potential of novel interventions therefore necessitates testing pre-clinical intervention strategies with clinically relevant cognitive assays. This study used a unilateral parietal lobe controlled cortical impact (CCI) model of TBI and tested rats on a touchscreen-based Paired Associates Learning (PAL) task, which is part of the Cambridge Neuropsychologic

A case report of agoraphobia following right parietal lobe surgery: changes in functional and structural connectivities of the multimodal vestibular network.

Agoraphobia is a visuo-vestibular-spatial disorder that may involve dysfunction of the vestibular network, which includes the insular and limbic cortex. We sought to study the neural correlates of this disorder in an individual who developed agoraphobia after surgical removal of a high-grade glioma located in the right parietal lobe, by assessing pre- and post-surgery connectivities in the vestibular network. The patient underwent surgical resection of the glioma located within the right supramarginal gyrus. The resection interested also portions of the superior and inferior parietal lobe. Str

Identification of miRNA-Target Gene Pairs in the Parietal and Frontal Lobes of the Brain in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease Using Bioinformatic Analyses.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a growing health concern worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been extensively studied in many diseases, including AD. To identify differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRNAs) and genes specific to AD, we used bioinformatic analyses to investigate candidate miRNA-mRNA pairs involved in the pathogenesis of AD. We focused on differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that are targets of DEmiRNAs. The GEO2R tool and the HISAT2-DESeq2 software were used to identify DEmiRNAs and DEGs. Bioinformatic tools available online, such as TAM and the Database for Annotation, Visualization

A Connectomic Atlas of the Human Cerebrum-Chapter 8: The Posterior Cingulate Cortex, Medial Parietal Lobe, and Parieto-Occipital Sulcus.

In this supplement, we build on work previously published under the Human Connectome Project. Specifically, we seek to show a comprehensive anatomic atlas of the human cerebrum demonstrating all 180 distinct regions comprising the cerebral cortex. The location, functional connectivity, and structural connectivity of these regions are outlined, and where possible a discussion is included of the functional significance of these areas. In part 8, we specifically address regions relevant to the posterior cingulate cortex, medial parietal lobe, and the parieto-occipital sulcus.

Perceptual distortions and delusional thinking following ketamine administration are related to increased pharmacological MRI signal changes in the parietal lobe.

Ketamine produces effects in healthy humans that resemble the positive, negative and cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia. We investigated the effect of ketamine administration on brain activity as indexed by blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) signal change response, and its relationship to ketamine-induced subjective changes, including perceptual distortion. Thirteen healthy participants volunteered for the study. All underwent a 15-min functional MRI acquisition with a ketamine infusion commencing after 5 min (approx 0.26 mg/kg over 20s followed by an infusion of approx. 0.42 mg/kg/h). Follo

Dosimetric comparison between intensity-modulated radiotherapy and RapidArc with single arc and dual arc for malignant glioma involving the parietal lobe.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the difference in treatment plan quality, monitor units (MUs) per fraction and dosimetric parameters between IMRT (intensity-modulated radiotherapy) and RapidArc with single arc (RA1) and dual arc (RA2) for malignant glioma involving the parietal lobe. Treatment plans for IMRT and RA1 and RA2 were prepared for 10 patients with malignant gliomas involving the parietal lobe. The Wilcoxon matched-pair signed-rank test was used to compare the plan quality, monitor units and dosimetric parameters between IMRT and RA1 and RA2 through dose-volume histogram

Elaboration versus suppression of cued memories: influence of memory recall instruction and success on parietal lobe, default network, and hippocampal activity.

Functional imaging studies of episodic memory retrieval consistently report task-evoked and memory-related activity in the medial temporal lobe, default network and parietal lobe subregions. Associated components of memory retrieval, such as attention-shifts, search, retrieval success, and post-retrieval processing also influence regional activity, but these influences remain ill-defined. To better understand how top-down control affects the neural bases of memory retrieval, we examined how regional activity responses were modulated by task goals during recall success or failure. Specifically,

A Rare Case of Adult-onset Gangliocytoma in the Parietal Lobe: Case Report and Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Registry Data Analysis.

We report a case of adult-onset gangliocytoma in the parietal lobe. A 54-year-old woman presented with sensory disturbance in her right upper limb. A computed tomography scan revealed a cystic and calcified lesion in the left parietal lobe. She underwent a left parietal craniotomy with gross total resection, and the pathological diagnosis was confirmed as gangliocytoma. Gangliocytomas are very rare tumors of the central nervous system, predominantly affecting children and young adults, and are often located in the temporal lobe. Reports of gangliocytomas developing after middle age are uncommo
