Ultrasonographic fractal dimension analysis for quantitative assessment of smoking-related parenchymal pattern complexity of the parotid gland.

Cigarette smoking may induce oxidative, inflammatory, and microvascular alterations in salivary gland tissue. However, subtle parenchymal changes may not be readily appreciable on conventional ultrasonography. This study aimed to evaluate smoking-related differences in image-derived parotid parenchymal pattern complexity using fractal analysis of B-mode ultrasonographic images. This prospective cross-sectional study included 95 adults: 47 smokers and 48 non-smokers. All participants underwent standardized B-mode ultrasonographic evaluation of both parotid glands. Three predefined regions of in

Short communication: Distribution of phospholipids in parotid cancer by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry.

BACKGROUND: Parotid cancer is relatively rare, and malignancy varies; therefore, novel markers are needed to predict prognosis. Recent advances in matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-IMS), useful for visualization of lipid molecules, have revealed the relationship between cancer and lipid metabolism, indicating the potential of lipids as biomarkers. However, the distribution and importance of phospholipids in parotid cancer remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use MALDI-IMS to comprehensively investigate the spatial distribution of phospholip

Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy for Cutaneous Head and Neck Melanoma: Mapping the Parotid Gland.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for primary cutaneous head and neck melanoma (CHNM) has been shown to be successful and is the current standard of care for intermediate-thickness melanoma. We evaluated our experience with CHNM associated with SLNB mapping to the region of the parotid gland. METHODS: Retrospective review of a prospectively collected melanoma database identified 1014 CHNMs. Two-hundred twenty-three patients underwent SLNB, and 72 (32%) had mapping in the region of the parotid gland between May 1995 and June 2003. RESULTS: The mean number of SLNs per patient was 2

Arteriovenous malformation of the parotid gland: Diagnostic perspective- A case report.

Arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of the parotid gland is an extremely rare condition with very few cases reported in the literature. Majority of the swellings in the parotid region are usually due to sialadenitis, tumour etc., therefore making the initial diagnosis of vascular malformation may be difficult if there is no evident Turkey-wattle sign. Here, we present a case of AVM of parotid gland with its clinical features, radiographic features and its management. The lesion, being a high flow one, was managed with sclerosing agents to regress its size.

Parotid Lymphoepithelial Cyst in a HIV-Negative Individual: A Case Report.

Benign lymphoepithelial cysts of the parotid are common in retropositive patients, but extremely rare in HIV-negative individuals. We present a 28-year-old man who presented with a painless, gradually increasing swelling in the left parotid region and was clinically diagnosed to have a pleomorphic adenoma of the left parotid gland. Preoperative blood investigations revealed that the patient was seronegative. He underwent a left superficial parotidectomy and the histopathology report indicated a benign lymphoepithelial cyst. The rarity of this lesion in a seronegative patient is the main reason

MRI findings for parotid lupus.

This report presents the MRI findings for parotid lupus erythematosus panniculitis. Although the clinical findings of this disorder have been described, very few reports describe the CT findings on this rare disease entity in the parotid region and no reports include its MR appearance. This unusual diagnosis should be considered in the context of proper clinical history.

Management of an unusual case of iatrogenic parotid sialocele using an infant feeding tube: a novel approach.

Injuries to the parotid duct and parenchyma resulting in swelling in the cheek region commonly present in maxillofacial practice. Sialocele is a discrete collection of saliva in a subcutaneous cavity that can be iatrogenic, idiopathic or the result of post-traumatic injuries to the duct or parenchyma, presenting as a salivary pseudocyst or retention cyst. We present an unusual case of parotid sialocele following surgery for sialolithiasis which presented with progressive painless swelling in the preauricular region of 9 months duration. Treatment included surgical exploration under local anaes

[Synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland: a case report].

Synovial sarcoma of the parotid gland is an extremely rare pathological entity, presenting as a particular form of synovial sarcoma of the cervicofacial region. This atypical localisation, linked to the absence of synovial tissue in this region, frequently complicates the differential diagnosis, notably with primary or secondary mesenchymal neoplasms and myoepitheliomas. We report the case of a 27-year-old patient presenting with a residual mass of the left parotid gland that appeared 6 years after exofacial parotidectomy for a confirmed synovial sarcoma. This work explores the clinical, patho

Castleman's disease of the bilateral parotid gland: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Castleman's disease (CD) is a benign lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by enlarged hyperplastic lymph nodes. We describe a patient who was found to have Castleman's disease as the cause of a parotid mass. METHODS AND RESULTS: The mass was the hyaline vascular type. After surgical excision of the largest masses on the right side, the patient was followed up for 6 months. Another mass in the left parotid region also became larger and was excised, with the pathological examination demonstrating Castleman's disease. CONCLUSION: Although rare in the head or neck region, Castle

Cytodiagnosis of lesions presenting as salivary gland swellings: a report of seven cases.

The cytologic and histologic findings of seven cases presenting clinically as salivary gland swellings are described. These included two cases of pilomatrixoma of skin in the parotid region, two cases of neurilemmoma in the submandibular area, a case of Kimura's disease in the peri-mandibular gland lymphoid tissue, a case of Castleman's disease in intraparotid lymph node, and a case of branchial cleft cyst in the parotid region. It is important to recognize lesions that masquerade as salivary gland tumors so that misdiagnosis and overdiagnosis on smears can be avoided and the patients can be t

Dacryo salivary fistula. Unusual case of salivary fistula draining into the inferior fornix of the eye.

Salivary fistula after a traumatic injury in the buccal region is not common. It is most commonly encountered in injuries involving the pre auricular region or soft tissues along the course of the parotid duct. It is more frequent in the parotid because its anatomical location is superficial; traumatic salivary fistulae of the other two major salivary glands are rare. This report presents an unusual case of a salivary fistula that occurred following trauma to the infraorbital region and drained into the inferior fornix of the left eye. A review of cases reported in the literature is presented.

Botulinum Toxin Treatment for Cancer-Related Disorders: A Systematic Review.

This systematic review investigates the effect of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) therapy on cancer-related disorders. A major bulk of the literature is focused on BoNT's effect on pain at the site of surgery or radiation. All 13 published studies on this issue indicated reduction or cessation of pain at these sites after local injection of BoNTs. Twelve studies addressed the effect of BoNT injection into the pylorus (sphincter between the stomach and the first part of the gut) for the prevention of gastroparesis after local resection of esophageal cancer. In eight studies, BoNT injection was supe

Parotid Gland Suspension Combined with Rhytidectomy to Recontour the Lower Face and Neck Enlargement Caused by Benign Parotid Hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Lower face and neck aging and facial shape changes are usually caused by soft tissue descent. During lower face and neck enlargement, parotid hypertrophy is an important influence factor of morphologic changes in the periauricular regions. Most plastic surgery techniques greatly improve the shape of the lower face and neck, but ignore the manipulation of the parotid gland. We aimed to resolve the lower face and neck enlargement caused by parotid hypertrophy. Thus, we performed parotid gland suspension combined with rhytidectomy to improve the lower face and neck contour. METHODS:

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma masquerading as a primary parotid tumor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma is more common in male individuals and is rare in the parotid region. In our case the tumor occurred in a 19-year-old Indian woman, and was mistaken for a primary salivary gland tumor. CASE PRESENTATION: A 19-year-old Indian woman complained of pain and swelling over the left side of the face for 1 year. This started as a small swelling, progressed gradually, and extended to the region of the ear lobe. No lymph nodes were detected. Clinical diagnosis offered was a primary salivary gland tumor of the parotid gland. Biopsy was done and morphology was in fa

Sporadic neurofibroma of facial nerve presenting as parotid gland tumor: a rare case report.

Intraparotid gland neurofibroma is a rare benign tumor that arises from Schwann cells of the facial nerve within the parotid gland. This case report discusses a 41-year-old woman who experienced a painless preauricular swelling on her right side for over 5 years. Clinical examination and ultrasound revealed a well-defined mass in the parotid gland. The patient underwent total mass excision, resulting in transient facial nerve dysfunction but complete recovery. These tumors often manifest as solitary masses in the parotid region and may compress nearby structures, causing facial paralysis or nu

Treatment of the first bite syndrome.

First bite syndrome is a potential complication of surgery involving the infratemporal fossa, deep lobe of the parotid gland and parapharyngeal space. It is described as an acute and intense pain in the parotid region caused with the first bite of each meal. It is related to damage to sympathetic innervation of the parotid gland. Parasympathetic hyperactivation is believed to stimulate an exaggerated myoepithelial cell contraction causing pain. Usual analgesic treatments have poor results. Botulinum toxin type A causes parasympathetic nerve paralysis of the parotid gland and this fact would mi

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the parotid gland.

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor, previously known as an inflammatory pseudotumor, is an uncommon neoplasm. This tumor, which has characteristic morphologic and immunohistochemical features, is mostly seen in the lung. We present a rare case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumor of the parotid gland. A 45-year-old woman presented with a 4-month history of a swelling in her right parotid region. A partial parotidectomy with preservation of the facial nerve branches was performed. The incidence of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the parotid gland is low, and local resection i

Epitheloid myxofibrosarcoma of the parotid gland.

Myxofibrosarcoma has been recently described as a distinct histological entity and commonly affects the extremities and trunk of the elderly. It is, however, rare in the head and neck (2.8%) region, and we are unaware of any reports of it presenting as a parotid mass. The epitheloid variant accounts for less than 3% of myxofibrosarcomas. We report a case of a 78/F presenting with an epitheloid myxofibrosarcoma in the parotid gland. The clinical presentation was of a parotid lump of 9-month duration, and the diagnosis was made following thorough histological assessment. We present what we belie
