Effect of Pressurized Metered Dose Inhaler Spray Characteristics and Particle Size Distribution on Drug Delivery Efficiency.

BACKGROUND: A key issue in pulmonary drug delivery is improvement of the delivery device for effective and targeted treatment. Pressurized metered dose inhalers (pMDIs) are the most popular aerosol therapy device for treating lung diseases. This article studies the effect of spray characteristics: injection velocity, spray cone angle, particle size distribution (PSD), and its mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) on drug delivery. METHODS: An idealized oral airway geometry, extending from mouth to the main bronchus, was connected to a pMDI device. Inhalation flow rates of 15, 30, and 60 L/m

Effects of roughage inclusion and particle size on performance and rumination behavior of finishing beef steers.

Roughage is typically mechanically processed to increase digestibility and improve handling and mixing characteristics in beef cattle finishing diets. Roughage is fed to promote ruminal health and decrease digestive upset, but inclusion in finishing diets is limited due to the cost per unit of energy. Rumination behavior may be a means to standardize roughage in beef cattle finishing diets, and increasing particle size of roughage may allow a decrease in roughage inclusion without sacrificing animal performance. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to quantify rumination time for a fin

Arsenic partitioning among particle-size fractions of mine wastes and stream sediments from cinnabar mining districts.

Tailings from abandoned mercury mines represent an important pollution source by metals and metalloids. Mercury mining in Asturias (north-western Spain) has been carried out since Roman times until the 1970s. Specific and non-specific arsenic minerals are present in the paragenesis of the Hg ore deposit. As a result of intensive mining operations, waste materials contain high concentrations of As, which can be geochemically dispersed throughout surrounding areas. Arsenic accumulation, mobility and availability in soils and sediments are strongly affected by the association of As with solid pha

Computational modelling of emboli travel trajectories in cerebral arteries: influence of microembolic particle size and density.

Ischaemic stroke is responsible for up to 80% of stroke cases. Prevention of the reoccurrence of ischaemic attack or stroke for patients who survived the first symptoms is the major treatment target. Accurate diagnosis of the emboli source for a specific infarction lesion is very important for a better treatment for the patient. However, due to the complex blood flow patterns in the cerebral arterial network, little is known so far of the embolic particle flow trajectory and its behaviour in such a complex flow field. The present study aims to study the trajectories of embolic particles releas

Optimizing supercritical antisolvent process parameters to minimize the particle size of paracetamol nanoencapsulated in L-polylactide.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to optimize the different process parameters including pressure, temperature, and polymer concentration, to produce fine small spherical particles with a narrow particle size distribution using a supercritical antisolvent method for drug encapsulation. The interaction between different process parameters was also investigated. METHODS AND RESULTS: The optimized process parameters resulted in production of nanoencapsulated paracetamol in L-polylactide with a mean diameter of approximately 300 nm at 120 bar, 30°C, and a polymer concentration of 16 ppm. Ther

Effect of particle size based separation of milled corn stover on AFEX pretreatment and enzymatic digestibility.

Particle size and compositional variance are found to have a substantial influence on ammonia fiber explosion (AFEX) pretreatment and enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass. Corn stover was milled and fractionated into particle sizes of varying composition. The larger particle size fractions (rich in corn cob and stalk portions) were found to be more recalcitrant to hydrolysis compared to the smaller size fractions (rich in leaves and husk portion). Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for biomass surface and b

Acute pulmonary toxicity caused by exposure to colloidal silica: particle size dependent pathological changes in mice.

To compare the pulmonary toxicity between ultrafine colloidal silica particles (UFCSs) and fine colloidal silica particles (FCSs), mice were intratracheally instilled with 3 mg of 14 nm UFCSs and 230 nm FCSs and pathologically examined from 30 minutes to 24 hour postexposure. Histopathologically, lungs exposed to both sizes of particles showed bronchiolar degeneration and necrosis, neutrophilic inflammation in alveoli with alveolar type II cell swelling and particle-laden alveolar macrophage accumulation. UFCSs, however, induced extensive alveolar hemorrhage compared to FCSs from 30 minutes on

Entry port selection for detecting particle size differences in metered dose inhaler formulations using cascade impaction.

Different sized glass entry ports were evaluated for their drug collection efficiency during aerodynamic particle sizing of metered dose inhalers (MDIs) using cascade impaction. A comparison was made between collection efficiency in the entry port, impactor plates, and filter using the 1 L, 2 L, and 20 L glass entry ports and the USP and twin impinger entry ports. Entry port losses were dependent on the size of entry port selected, with 1-2 L ports showing optimal recovery on impactor plates, compared to the USP entry port. The 1 L entry port was further compared with the USP entry port in its

Effect of soybean meal particle size on amino acid and energy digestibility in grower-finisher swine.

A study was conducted using the ileal digestibility technique with grower-finisher pigs to evaluate the effects of particle size reduction of soybean meal (SBM) on amino acid and energy digestibility. Soybean meal was processed through a hammer mill to achieve average particle sizes of 900, 600, 300, and 150 microm. The treatments included the use of two soybean meal sources and soy protein concentrate. One source of SBM was ground to four different particle sizes (i.e., 949, 600, 389, 185); a second source was a common SBM source used in other trials (i.e., 800 microm). The soy protein concen

Effect of diet particle size and feeding of H2-receptor antagonists on gastric ulcers in swine.

Four experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of diet and the administration of H2-antagonists in feed on gastric ulcer formation and performance of growing-finishing swine. Pigs receiving a finely ground diet (less than lmm) grew faster (.73 vs .68 kg/d, P less than .01) and had better feed utilization (3.47 vs 3.76, P less than .01) than pigs receiving a cracked corn-based diet. Incidence of ulcers in the esophageal region of the stomach of pigs fed the finely ground diet was greater (P less than .01) than in pigs fed cracked corn. The average daily gain of pigs receiving the finely

The role of particle size distribution on permeability and efficiency of slurry-packed liquid chromatography columns.

This review critically examines past and recent studies addressing the intrinsic role of particle size distribution (PSD) in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), with a focus on speed and efficiency. The discussion integrates theoretical models of bed permeability and plate height with experimental evidence to assess the influence of PSD on column permeability and chromatographic resolution. Overall, most findings indicate that PSD has little or no intrinsic impact on key performance metrics, including column permeability, longitudinal diffusion, short-range axial dispersion, and sol

Nanoplastic toxicity and uptake in kidney cells: differential effects of concentration, particle size, and polymer type.

Nanoplastics (NPs, < 1 µm) are emerging environmental contaminants capable of crossing biological barriers and interacting at the cellular and subcellular level. Despite evidence of microplastics in human kidney tissue and urine, the renal effects of NPs remain poorly understood. This study investigated the short-term effects of NPs polymer type, size, and concentration on human kidney proximal tubule cells (HK-2). Cells were exposed for 24-h to carboxylated polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and polyethylene (PE) NPs (15-100 nm) at concentrations from 0.1 to 200 µg/mL. NPs mo

Particle Size Dictates Transport Mechanism and Performance in Li6PS5Cl Conversion Cathodes for All-Solid-State Batteries.

An emerging paradigm in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) is the integration of electrolyte and active material within a single material, a concept exemplified by Li6PS5Cl (LPSCl), a common sulfide solid electrolyte that can become electrochemically active through conversion reactions. Yet whether this chemistry enables high-capacity energy storage or is ultimately limited by detrimental decomposition remains unresolved. Here, we show that particle size governs both accessible capacity and Li transport in LPSCl-carbon cathodes. Unexpectedly, although particle refinement progressively increases

The iron paradox and particle size sensing: transcriptomic response of Enterococcus faecalis to non-nutritive minerals.

Minerals are known to influence microbial metabolism as nutrient sources or redox partners, yet whether chemically inert, non-nutritive minerals can regulate microbial physiology, and through what mechanisms, remains poorly understood. Here, we used transcriptomics to investigate the response of Enterococcus faecalis to Al2O3 and SiO2 particles spanning nanoscale to millimeter scale. Mineral exposure triggered extensive transcriptional reprogramming across hundreds of differentially expressed genes. Notably, a massive upregulation of iron acquisition genes (log2FC range from 3.8 to 4.2) concur

Rapid bacteriophage quantification with a particle size analyzer combined with polarization intensity differential scattering (PIDS) detector.

The study of bacteriophages (phages) and effects on their microenvironments expanded exponentially within the last decade. While there are multiple described methods for phage quantitation, there is still a need for a rapid, label-free method. To this end, we established a procedure for rapid phage quantitation through novel use of a particle size analyzer with Polarization Intensity Differential (PIDS) technology and eliminated the need for labels or knowledge of bacterial host. We validated the procedure and analysis method, termed PhageFOTO (Fast Optical Tallying of Objects) using several p

Flow rate- and particle size-insensitive viscoelastic 3D sheathless focusing: A mechanistic study for refined understanding.

Three-dimensional (3D) cell focusing is a critical prerequisite for precise microfluidic-based cell manipulation and detection. Despite significant advances, devices capable of realizing flow rate- and particle size-insensitive 3D sheathless focusing remain scarce. To address this challenge, we propose a straight-channel viscoelastic microfluidics (VEM) and systematically investigate microparticle dynamics through theoretical modeling. The correlations of polyethylene oxide (PEO) concentration and flow rate with particle focusing ability and migration velocity are quantitatively characterized,

Assessment of Particle Size-Resolved Surface-Charge Density Distributions of Polymer Nanoparticles by Capillary Zone Electrophoresis.

Polymeric nanoparticles (PNPs) are widely used in paints, coatings, and as drug carriers. Surface charge density (SCD) is a key performance parameter of PNPs to ensure PNP stability and adhesion to surfaces, but its detailed assessment is challenging as PNP synthesis yields intrinsically heterogeneous results, exhibiting both SCD and particle-size distributions (PSDs). We present a new method for the determination of PNP SCD distributions using capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and chemometric deconvolution. For method development, polystyrene NPs of certified size (50-350 nm) were analyzed

Coupled Transport and Reaction Modeling of Sorbent Particle Size Effects in Nonisothermal Packed-Bed CO2 Adsorption.

Recent studies have shown that solid sorbents offer a promising route for post-combustion CO2 capture. This potential remains uncertain because the influence of particle size on the capture efficiency and reactor performance has not been fully characterized. Here, we developed a two-dimensional CFD Eulerian-Eulerian model, validated it against experimental data, and applied it to simulate CO2 capture in a packed-bed reactor filled with spherical particles of 0.5, 0.8, and 1.5 mm diameter. A carbon-based sorbent impregnated with potassium carbonate (K2CO3) was chosen for this study due to its r

Scoping the applicability of the KOC concept for pesticides across soil particle size and carbon content.

Soil organic carbon (OC) is generally considered the determining soil fraction for pesticide sorption in soils. It is common practice to normalize the sorption distribution coefficient (Kd) to OC (KOC) to compare sorption across different soils. This approach ignores the potential role of mineral soil components and may lead to sorption overestimation in carbon poor soil fractions. This study investigates how OC contributes to sorption of 11 pesticides across different soil types and particle-size fractions and evaluates to what degree KOC can account for variability in sorption. Sorption affi

Projection of Target Drug Particle Size in Oral Formulations Using the Refined Developability Classification System (rDCS).

Dissolution limitations to oral absorption can occur if the time required for dissolution is longer than the transit time across the small intestine and/or if dissolution is slower than the drug's permeation through the gut wall. These limitations most often occur for poorly soluble drugs. A standard method for overcoming dissolution issues is to reduce the particle size of the (solid) drug. Building on the refined Developability Classification System (rDCS), this work establishes a novel set of equations with which the appropriate degree of particle size reduction needed to mitigate dissoluti
