Commentary: Developing Relationships through Trust in Indigenous Health Research.

Developing strong relationships between researchers and Indigenous partners and communities is crucial for mutually beneficial and appropriate Indigenous health research. However, explanations on the need for strong relationships and how they may be achieved are not often found within the research literature. Given the history of mistrust, exploitation and even unethical research practices with Indigenous populations, collaborative research partnerships necessitate good relationships. For our long-standing community-based participatory research partnership, trust in our relationships has been

Implementing School-Associated Vaccination Events in Colorado Public Schools: A Statewide Survey of Nurses.

BACKGROUND: Schools are important settings for delivering vaccines. It is unknown how facilitators of and barriers to implementing school-associated vaccination events (SAVEs) vary by school- and community-level characteristics. METHODS: We fielded a web-based survey of school nurses that worked in Colorado public schools in Fall 2024 to assess perceived implementation facilitators and barriers. We linked survey responses (n = 368) to publicly available data and conducted descriptive analyses. RESULTS: Key facilitators identified by nurses that held SAVEs between 2018 and 2024 included paren

Public and participant involvement as a pathway to inclusive dementia research.

The field of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) urgently requires inclusive research to ensure the priorities and outcomes of research apply to those most impacted. We postulate public and participant involvement (PPI) as a pathway to achieving the best science, both in research that informs health and social policy as well as in therapeutic studies to treat and prevent ADRD. This position paper aims to provide dementia researchers with evidence to understand how to apply PPI. We begin by highlighting the disparities experienced by people with dementia, including ageism, stigma o

Breaking Borders: How Barriers to Global Mobility Hinder International Partnerships in Academic Medicine.

This article describes the authors' personal experiences of collaborating across international borders in academic research. International collaboration in academic medicine is one of the most important ways by which research and innovation develop globally. However, the intersections among colonialism, academic medicine, and global health research have created a neocolonial narrative that perpetuates inequalities in global health partnerships. The authors critically examine the visa process as an example of a racist practice to show how the challenges of blocked mobility increase inequality a

Partnering with trans and gender diverse youth in health care research: considerations for safe and meaningful engagement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: When pursuing participatory methods with youth, health care research teams may have the opportunity to create partnerships with transgender and gender diverse youth (TGDY). While these partnerships are crucial to ensure the voices of TGDY are included throughout health domains, research teams must ensure this marginalized population is safely and meaningfully included. It is therefore important for research teams to be aware of key pitfalls that contribute to the marginalization of TGDY in health care and research, and certain strategies to counteract these pitfalls.

Reimagining public-private partnerships for primary health care in Africa: a governance and systems analysis of emerging models in Botswana.

BACKGROUND: Primary health care (PHC) systems across many low- and middle-income countries increasingly rely on mixed provider environments involving public, private, and mission-based actors. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are often promoted as a way of improving coordination and expanding access to care. However, many PHC partnerships continue to be governed through highly centralized and compliance-oriented arrangements that may limit flexibility, trust, and long-term collaboration. Botswana provides a useful case for examining how PPPs are governed within a health system experiencing f

Educational strategies for preparing nurse practitioners for rural practice.

Rural communities experience health care workforce shortages, poorer health outcomes, and significant barriers related to health care access, transportation, behavioral health services, and other social drivers of health. Nurse practitioners (NPs) are well positioned to address these disparities; however, traditional NP education often emphasizes urban and suburban practice environments, leaving graduates underprepared for the realities of rural practice. Preparing NPs to serve rural populations requires competencies that extend beyond clinical care, including cultural humility, community enga

Lessons Learned Applying the Icelandic Prevention Model to Youth Mental Health and Well-Being in Idaho.

BACKGROUND: The US is facing a youth mental health crisis. The Icelandic prevention model (IPM) may represent one promising way to address it. This paper describes using the IPM to promote youth mental health, with special attention given to the guiding principle of "embracing public schools as the natural hub of community efforts to support children and adolescents." CONTRIBUTIONS TO PRACTICE: Communities for Youth (C4Y) leads academic-community partnerships that facilitate community-level approaches to improving youth mental health. While implementing the IPM, C4Y has learned valuable lesso

Be YOU!: A Collaborative Effort to Address Minority Stress for LGBTQ+ Youth in School Settings.

LGBTQ youth often experience unsafe school climates and are at greater risk for compromised mental health relative to their heterosexual and cisgender peers. The psychological mediation model posits that these health inequities are produced by minority stress, which operates through several key mechanisms: rumination, emotion regulation, and coping. Efforts towards designing social services that might address these mechanisms, and thus improve LGBTQ youth wellbeing, are limited. Informed by empirical research and therapeutic practices, Be YOU! was conceived as a school-based empowerment progra

Frontline Management of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer-Combining Clinical Expertise with Community Practice Collaboration and Cutting-Edge Research.

Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the most common histology of ovarian cancer defined as epithelial cancer derived from the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or primary peritoneum. It is the fifth most common cause of cancer-related death in women in the United States. Because of a lack of effective screening and non-specific symptoms, EOC is typically diagnosed at an advanced stage (FIGO stage III or IV) and approximately one third of patients have malignant ascites at initial presentation. The treatment of ovarian cancer consists of a combination of cytoreductive surgery and systemic chemotherapy.

Strengthening Partnerships in School-Based Substance Use Prevention and Intervention for Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent substance use remains a significant concern for student health, well-being, and academic outcomes, yet fewer than 4% of youth who need treatment receive it. Schools are a critical, but underutilized setting, for adolescent substance use prevention and intervention. While Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) provide a useful framework, meaningful engagement of youth, families, schools, and communities is crucial for effective and equitable systems. CONTRIBUTIONS TO THEORY: This paper asserts that youth-family-school-community partnerships should serve as the core found

The "Best of Both Worlds": Building a community-academic partnership for research with legal system-impacted individuals.

Equitable community-academic research partnerships provide an innovative way to advance health outcomes among criminal legal system-impacted individuals. The extant literature lacks accounts that detail the process for developing such partnerships, particularly in community-based (rather than carceral) settings and with community organizations (rather than system actors). This First-Person Account-co-written by members of a research team consisting of academic researchers and community partners, including formerly incarcerated individuals-details opportunities and challenges that emerged throu

Advocating for a patient- and family centered care approach to management of short bowel syndrome.

Patient- and family centered care (PFCC) is a model of providing healthcare that incorporates the preferences, needs, and values of the patient and their family and is built on a solid partnership between the healthcare team and patient/family. This partnership is critical in short bowel syndrome (SBS) management since the condition is rare, chronic, involves a heterogenous population, and calls for a personalized approach to care. Institutions can facilitate the practice of PFCC by supporting a teamwork approach to care, which, in the case of SBS, ideally involves a comprehensive intestinal r

Fit for purpose: does specialist community nurse education prepare nurses for practice?

This paper sets out to explore the experience of newly qualified community nurses, one year on in practice, and to establish if the specialist course prepares them for the reality of practice. It presents a piece of action research evaluating the education process for community nurses through a series of cycles of self-reflection which lead to recommendations for both policy and curriculum changes. Our findings show that community nurses are very positive about their new roles and their work with clients and patients, that they are able to use their newly acquired analytical skills in their pr

INTRODUCTION: On a global scale, bringing together schools and public child psychiatry services is favored to promote the development of early interventions that could improve health trajectories, from prevention to treatment, for children exposed to psychological and psychiatric difficulties. In a public health perspective, contextualizing these practices is essential in order to ensure their sustainability and efficiency. This article sheds light on the stakes of these partnerships and their advantages in responding to the health, social, and economic mark that has been left behind by the cr

South Asian Health. From Research to Practice and Policy: An Overview.

The US South Asian population has grown tremendously, and is now over 2.5 million. South Asians often face tremendous cultural, socioeconomic, linguistic and structural obstacles to good health, and face staggering cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer risk. Coupled with this is a paucity of detailed data on the population's unique CVD and cancer risk profiles, etiologic mechanisms, and effective interventions to address South Asian health disparities. This data gap compelled an initiative to develop more targeted research and evidence-based practice and policy approaches. The South Asian He
