How far north are migrant birds transporting the tick Ixodes scapularis in Canada? Insights from stable hydrogen isotope analyses of feathers.

Lyme disease is emerging in Canada because of northward range expansion of the tick vector Ixodes scapularis. It is hypothesised that I. scapularis feeding on passerine birds migrating north in spring are important in founding new I. scapularis populations leading to northward range expansion. However, there are no studies on how far north I. scapularis may be carried, only inferences from passive tick surveillance. We used stable hydrogen isotope (δ(2)H) analysis of rectrices collected from northward migrating, I. scapularis-carrying, passerine birds captured in Canada to estimate how far nor

Differential influence of urbanisation on Coccidian infection in two passerine birds.

Urbanisation has the potential to increase the risk of parasitism on wildlife. Although some ectoparasite groups appear unaffected, different responses are hypothesised for parasites with simpler life histories such as gastrointestinal parasites. Red-browed finches (RBF) and the superb fairywrens (SFW), two native passerine birds affected by urbanisation, were examined for Coccidian parasites along an urbanisation gradient in New South Wales, Australia, in order to detect if prevalence might be directly related to the degree of urbanisation. Influence of urbanisation on Coccidian infection was

Undirected (solitary) birdsong in female and male blue-capped cordon-bleus (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus) and its endocrine correlates.

BACKGROUND: Birdsong is a popular model system in research areas such as vocal communication, neuroethology or neuroendocrinology of behaviour. As most research has been conducted on species with male-only song production, the hormone-dependency of male song is well established. However, female singing and its mechanisms are poorly understood. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We characterised the song and its endocrine correlates of blue-capped cordon-bleus (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus), a species in which both sexes sing. Like other estrildids, they produce directed song during courtship and un

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting birds in an Atlantic rain forest region of Brazil.

Brazil has the third richest bird diversity of the world; however, there are few data concerning ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) parazitizing birds. The aim of the study was to report tick infestations on wild birds from an Atlantic rain forest region of Brazil. During 2 yr, ticks were collected from birds and from the environment in 12 forest sites. A total of 1,725 birds were captured representing 80 species from 24 families. In total, 223 (13%) birds were found infested by immature stages of Amblyomma ticks: 1,800 larvae and 539 nymphs. The prevalence of ticks was higher among birds from the famili

Sub-lingual oral fistulas in free-living stitchbirds (Notiomystis cincta).

Sub-lingual oral fistulas are a consistently observed lesion affecting the New Zealand stitchbird (hihi: Notiomystis cincta). This lesion, which has not been reported in other species, is usually only recognized when the tongue protrudes below the bird's mandible from a hole in the oral-cavity floor. In this study, we surveyed the prevalence of oral fistulas in a free-living population of stitchbirds on Tiritiri Matangi Island in 2002, 2003 and 2005. Between surveys, individuals with a fistula were caught and the progress of their lesion was monitored. The majority of birds with a fistula had

Accounting for recombination rate variation improves inference of barrier loci and reveals the role of both natural and sexual selection in an incipient bird radiation.

Examining genomic patterns of differentiation across lineage pairs at different stages of the speciation continuum, in combination with recombination maps, can help disentangle the effects of linked and divergent selection and identify lineage-specific targets of selection that may act as barrier loci during speciation. Here, we apply this framework to genomic data from African and Indian Ocean bird species of the genus Zosterops (Zosteropidae) to identify candidate barrier loci between ecologically, phenotypically, and genetically distinct Reunion gray white-eye (Zosterops borbonicus) parapat

Exposure to PFAS induced differential oxidative stress-related responses in nestlings of two resident passerine birds nearby a fluoropolymer production plant.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of chemicals of growing concern due to their persistence and potential impacts on human and environmental health. While the occurrence and toxicity of several legacy PFAS are relatively well understood, knowledge of emerging PFAS, particularly in free-living organisms, remains limited. This study investigated the occurrence and biological effects of a mixture of thirty-eight legacy and emerging PFAS nearby a Fluoropolymer Production Plant (FPP) located in Northwestern Italy. Legacy and emerging PFAS were measured in eggs of two res

How to build a puncture- and breakage-resistant eggshell? Mechanical and structural analyses of avian brood parasites and their hosts.

Evolved eggshell strength is greater in several lineages of obligate avian brood parasites (birds that lay their eggs in other species' nests) than in their hosts. Greater strength is typically indirectly implied by eggshell thickness comparisons between parasites and hosts. Nevertheless, there is strong evidence that the eggshell structural organization differentially influences its mechanical properties. Using instrumental puncture tests and SEM/EBSD and XRD techniques, we studied the most relevant eggshell mechanical, textural, ultrastructural and microstructural features between several ho

Characterization of five unclassified orthobunyaviruses (Bunyaviridae) from Africa and the Americas.

The Bunyaviridae family is made up of a diverse range of viruses, some of which cause disease and are a cause for concern in human and veterinary health. Here, we report the genomic and antigenic characterization of five previously uncharacterized bunyaviruses. Based on their ultrastructure, antigenic relationships and phylogenomic relationships, the five viruses are classified as members of the Orthobunyavirus genus. Three are viruses in the California encephalitis virus serogroup and are related to Trivittatus virus; the two others are most similar to the Mermet virus in the Simbu serogroup,

Stereotyped and non-stereotyped features of the temporal patterning of singing sessions in the ovenbird Seiurus auricapillus.

Temporal patterning of recorded singing sessions of 26 different male ovenbirds Seiurus auricapillus (Fringillidae: Parulini) was analyzed computationally, in order to test whether differences among songs are potentially informative or merely reflect performance errors. Repeated songs within a singing session by a given male showed relatively little inter-individual variation in the duration of the song or in the number of units composing it, although these features varied substantially among individuals. On the other hand, within a session of singing by an individual male, the most variable a

Geographic variation in the community structure of lice on western scrub-jays.

Parasites are incredibly diverse. An important factor in the evolution of this diversity is the fact that many parasite species are restricted to 1, or just a few, host species. In addition, some parasites exhibit geographic specificity that is nested within their specificity to a particular species of host. The environmental factors that restrict parasites to particular regions within the host's range are poorly understood, and it is often difficult to know whether such patterns of geographic specificity are real, or merely artifacts of uneven host sampling. For over a decade, we sampled comm

Molecular detection of Plasmodium huffi (Apicomplexa: Haemosporida) in birds from Mato Grosso state, midwestern Brazil with new host data.

Haemosporidians are heteroxenous, cosmopolitan protozoa that infect birds, using hematophagous dipterans as vectors. The genus Plasmodium has a moderate species diversity and is known for great flexibility in alternating host species, mild to severe pathogenicity, and generally low prevalence. Plasmodium huffi was first described in 1950 and considered insufficiently characterized, however, in 2021, this species was re-described as infecting two different Brazilian toucans, Ramphastos toco and Pteroglossus aracari. Herein, we describe four new potential avian host species for P. huffi: Pavo cr

Gene Flow Accompanies Divergence in Beringian Birds.

The generation and maintenance of biodiversity are driven by population divergence and speciation. We investigated divergence, gene flow, and speciation in Beringia, a region at the top of the North Pacific Ocean with a history of dramatic landscape alteration through Pleistocene glacial cycles. These cycles repeatedly split and connected the Asian and North American continents, separating and reconnecting avian populations. Glacial refugia within Beringia also isolated some populations for a time before potentially enabling them to reunite during interglacial periods. Prior work suggests gene

First detection of Borrelia burgdorferi-antibodies in free-living birds of prey from Eastern Westphalia, Germany.

Borrelia (B.) burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agent of Lyme disease, is the most important arthropod-borne zoonosis-pathogen in the Northern hemisphere. Besides small mammals, birds, primarily Passeriformes and sea birds, play an important role in the transmission, distribution and maintenance of this disease. Previous studies on birds have focused mainly on the detection of Borrelia-infected ticks. However, the presence or absence of an infected tick cannot be taken as an indicator of the infective status of the avian host; to date this area of research has not been explored. In this st

Avian diversity and West Nile virus: testing associations between biodiversity and infectious disease risk.

The emergence of several high profile infectious diseases in recent years has focused attention on our need to understand the ecological factors contributing to the spread of infectious diseases. West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic disease that was first detected in the United States in 1999. The factors accounting for variation in the prevalence of WNV are poorly understood, but recentideas suggesting links between high biodiversity and reduced vector-borne disease risk may help account for distribution patterns of this disease. Since wild birds are the primary reservoir hosts

West Nile Virus Infections in an Urban Colony of American White Ibises (Eudocimus albus) in South Florida, USA.

West Nile virus (WNV) is pathogenic in a wide range of avian hosts and is endemic in much of North America. This virus is responsible for population declines of some Passeriformes. We describe a WNV-associated mortality event in American White Ibis (Eudocimus albus) nestlings. This is a species, inherent to the Everglades ecosystem, which has recently begun nesting in urban areas. An urban colony in south Florida was monitored from March-July in 2020 as part of an ongoing study. Nestling carcasses were collected opportunistically and sent to the Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study,

Synthesis of Maternal Transfer of Mercury in Birds: Implications for Altered Toxicity Risk.

Maternal transfer is a predominant route of methylmercury (MeHg) exposure to offspring. We reviewed and synthesized published and unpublished data on maternal transfer of MeHg in birds. Using paired samples of females' blood (n = 564) and their eggs (n = 1814) from 26 bird species in 6 taxonomic orders, we conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate whether maternal transfer of MeHg to eggs differed among species and caused differential toxicity risk to embryos. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in eggs increased with maternal blood THg concentrations; however, the proportion of THg transferred fro

Rapid sex determination of a wild passerine species using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP).

Many bird species are sexually monomorphic and cannot be sexed based on phenotypic traits. Rapid sex determination is often a necessary component of avian studies focusing on behavior, ecology, evolution, and conservation. While PCR-based methods are the most common technique for molecularly sexing birds in the laboratory, a simpler, faster, and cheaper method has emerged, which can be used in the laboratory, but importantly also in the field. Herein, we used loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for rapid sex determination of blood samples from juvenile European blackcaps, Sylvia atri

Kinship Analysis Confirms Tolerant Galapagos Mockingbirds Are a Source of Nest Flies That Threaten Darwin's Finches.

Host species have evolved different strategies for dealing with parasites. 'Vulnerable' hosts, which suffer reduced fitness from parasites, are under selection to evolve defences. 'Tolerant' hosts, by contrast, avoid reductions in fitness by mitigating parasite damage. When tolerant and vulnerable hosts co-occur, tolerant hosts may pose an indirect threat to vulnerable hosts by serving as a source of parasite infestation. Avian vampire flies (Philornis downsi) are introduced parasites of Galapagos mockingbirds (Mimus parvulus) and Darwin's finches. Mockingbirds are relatively tolerant, while f
