Pasteurella multocida is generally responsible for local infections through animal bites. It can be a cause of meningitis, which tends to affect people at the extreme ages of life or suffering from immunodeficiency. A 14-year-old teenager was hospitalized with typical signs of bacterial meningitis. P. multocida was evidenced in the cerebrospinal fluid. Progression was marked by a degradation on the 4th day of treatment, despite intravenous antibiotic therapy with third-generation cephalosporin, followed by a single seizure on the 7th day of treatment. The CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a common, surgical procedure in Danish ear-nose-throat departments. Surgery is often performed as an outpatient procedure. Major complications are rare, however, they may develop after the patient has been discharged. This is a case report of Pasteurella multocida meningitis secondary to FESS in a 54-year-old male.

Pasteurella multocida can cause a variety of diseases in various species of mammals and birds throughout the world but nothing is known about its importance for wild great apes. In this study we isolated P. multocida from wild living, habituated chimpanzees from Taï National Park, Côte d'Ivoire. Isolates originated from two chimpanzees that died during a respiratory disease outbreak in 2004 as well as from one individual that developed chronic air-sacculitis following this outbreak. Four isolates were subjected to a full phenotypic and molecular characterisation. Two different clones were iden

Pasteurella are commensal gram-negative bacteria isolated from the oral cavity of many domesticated animals. Most human infections occur post animal bite or scratch injury resulting in local cutaneous infection; however, case reports suggest that transmission may occur via animal secretions. Pasteurella species can be associated with serious systemic infections particularly in those with underlying disease and in the immunocompromised. We present a case of invasive Pasteurella multocida sinusitis in an immunocompromised renal transplant patient most likely acquired from a pet dog through direc

Endocarditis due to Pasteurella pneumotropica are very rarely described. We report a new case of bacterial endocarditis in a 43 years-old patient with mitral stenosis. The patient was admitted to the hospital for lethargy, malaise and hemiparesis. On physical examination, a new systolic murmur was found. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a vegetation on the mitral valve. Three blood culture sets were drawn and after 24 hours of incubation, the last two sets yielded Pasteurella pneumotropica and cell wall deficient forms (L-forms). The patient was successfully treated with gentamicin and

The presence of Pasteurella multocida in the oropharynx of 58 pig, cattle or rabbit breeders whose livestock had suffered from pasteurellosis was investigated using a selective medium. Blood samples for serological studies were collected at the same moment. Nineteen breeders were found to host one P multocida subsp multocida strain. Oropharyngeal carriage of P multocida was found to be more frequent in pig breeders (42% of individuals) than in cattle (10%) or rabbit (0%) breeders. Genomic polymorphism among 10 D2 strains was found by restriction endonuclease analysis using pulsed-field gel ele

Nine previously vaccinated turkeys were inoculated intravenously with Pasteurella anatipestifer, and blood samples were taken periodically to evaluate the potential of chronically infected turkeys to serve as reservoirs of infection for blood-feeding arthropod vectors. Vertebral osteomyelitis (spondylitis), as yet unreported in the literature in association with infection with the organism, was found in the thoracic vertebrae of five out of nine inoculated turkeys, and P. anatipestifer was isolated from the thoracic vertebrae of three of the five. The organism was isolated from the peripheral

Authors report a Pasteurella Multocida corneal abscess after a scratch from a cat. The evolution was torpid and needed a transfixiant keratoplasty. They recall bacterial tanks, infestation ways, clinical manifestations and bacteriological identification. They note the low occurrence of ophthalmological manifestations and the sensibility of Pasteurella to various antibiotics, especially Beta lactams, phenicol and cyclins.

The authors report a case of pasteurellosis with abscess of the brain consecutive to a bronchopulmonary infection in a woman with old-standing bilateral bronchiectasis. The prevalence of respiratory infections caused by Pasteurella multocida is low, but it is certainly underestimated. Bronchial and/or pleuro-pulmonary infections occur in subjects with reduced local and/or systemic defences. The respiratory system is colonized by direct or indirect contagion, usually in contact with pet animals carrying the organism.

Antigens associated with whole Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A serotype 1, a capsular carbohydrate-protein extract of the organism, and P. haemolytica leukotoxin were separated by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Antigens of the electrophoresed preparations were detected by Western blotting (immunoblotting) with sera from cattle which were either nonvaccinated or vaccinated with live or killed P. haemolytica vaccines and had variable degrees of resistance to experimental pneumonic pasteurellosis. Distinct, easily recognizable antigens of these preparations were iden

Capsular and somatic serotyping was performed on 79 cultures of Pasteurella multocida from rabbits. Of these isolates, 74 were capsular type A as determined by the staphylococcal hyaluronidase decapsulation test and five were type D by the acriflavine flocculation test. Somatic type 12 was the dominant serotype, and the remainder (type 1, 3, 4 and 11) were less frequent as determined by the gel diffusion precipitin test. This report is in general agreement with other recent reports with rabbit isolates and collectively they provide important serotype and epizootiological information that will

A detailed study was made of lambs aged 5--7 months naturally infected with Pasteurella haemolytica biotype T. In addition to the well known features of such infections, previously unreported necrotic lesions of the tonsil, oesophagus, pharynx and adjacent areas were consistently seen. Large numbers of P. haemolytica were present in the tonsil, oesophageal lesions, lung, liver and spleen, but few or none in other tissues. The evidence indicated that the disease was not a true septicaemia. It is postulated that P. haemolytica biotype T already present in the tonsils multiplies and invades the a

A reproducible swine pneumonia model was developed, utilizing Pasteurella multocida (strain MSU 7) and a rapid endotracheal inoculating technique. The model provided a means of testing various factors, such as therapeutic agents that may influence the course of pulmonary pasteurellosis. In a series of experiments, 81 infected nonmedicated pigs had a morbidity of 96% and a mortality of 22%. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 62% of the lungs at necropsy; 86% of the lungs had gross lesions characteristic for strain MSU 7 pneumonic pasteurellosis when the pigs were necropsied 7 days after in

Pasteurella multocida is a common cause of infection followingbites or scratches caused by dogs and cats. However, it is rarely reported and appar-ently often overlooked as a pathogen. It causes the typical clinical manifestationsof a rapidly developing cellulitis at the site of injury. The infection is potentiallydangerous and can cause a chronic local infection of deep tissues and septicemia. However, it responds well to several antimicrobials, with penicillin being the drug ofchoice

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) is a globally significant pathogen causing severe infections in livestock, including hemorrhagic septicemia and respiratory diseases. Current vaccines offer limited serotype-specific protection, particularly against serotype A:3, a major cause of bovine respiratory disease. Extracellular products (ECPs) of bacteria, containing secreted proteins and enzymes, have shown promise as immunogens in other pathogens, but their potential against P. multocida remains unclear.
METHODS: Extracellular products were isolated from P. multocida serotype A:3 st

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) can cause severe respiratory disease in cattle, resulting in high mortality and morbidity. Inflammasomes are multiprotein complexes in the cytoplasm that recognize pathogens and play an important role in the host defense against microbial infection. In this study, the mechanism of P. multocida-induced NLRP6 inflammasome activation was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Firstly, P. multocida induced severe inflammation with a large number of inflammatory cells infiltrating the lungs of WT and Nlrp6-/- mice. Nlrp6-/- mice were more susceptible to P. multocida

Muscarinic acetylcholine receptors are metabotropic G-protein coupled receptors. Muscarinic receptors in the cardiovascular system play a central role in its regulation. Particularly M2 receptors slow down the heart rate by reducing the impulse conductivity through the atrioventricular node. In general, activation of muscarinic receptors has sedative effects on the cardiovascular system, including vasodilation, negative chronotropic and inotropic effects on the heart, and cardioprotective effects, including antifibrillatory effects. First, we review the signaling of individual subtypes of musc
