BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) infection can cause a series of diseases in different animals and cause huge economic losses to the breeding industry. P. multocida is considered to be one of the most significant pathogens in rabbits. In order to elucidate the pathogenic mechanism and innate immune response of P. multocida, an infection experiment was carried out in this study.
RESULTS: Our results showed that the clinical symptoms of rabbits were severe dyspnoea and serous nasal fluid. During the course of the disease, the deaths peaked at 2 days post infection (dpi) and mort

A 49-year-old woman with alcoholic cirrhosis who owned a pet cat was brought to the hospital with frequent diarrhea every 30 min for two days. She was treated intensively for septic shock; however, she died on the third day. Pasteurella multocida is known to cause soft tissue infections; however, in immunocompromised individuals, it can cause severe invasive infections. Physicians should consider P. multocida infection when a patient with liver cirrhosis presents in shock following symptoms of enteritis. Clinical decisions should be made considering that this infection is associated with a hig

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida is responsible for significant economic losses in pigs worldwide. In clinically diseased pigs, most P. multocida isolates are characterised as subspecies multocida, biovar 2 or 3 and capsular type A or D; however, there is little information regarding subspecies, biovars, and other capsular types of P. multocida isolates in Korea. Here, we provided information covering an extended time period regarding P. multocida in pigs with pneumonia in Korea using phenotypic and genotypic characterisations and data associated with the minimum inhibitory concentrations.

BACKGROUND: There are as many as 300,000 visits to the emergency department in the USA with animal bites every year. The most common infection after cat or dog bite is with Pasteurella Multocida. Many people infected will also have long-term central venous access for dialysis or for other reasons. No prior reports or guidelines exist regarding the management of P. multocida bacteremia due to line infection or bacteremia in the presence of long-term central venous access. We describe the successful treatment of an individual with P. multocida bacteremia secondary to tunnelled line infection man

Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) infection causes substantial economic loss in the duck industry. Danofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone solely used in animals, shows good antibacterial activity against P. multocida. In this study, the in vitro pharmacodynamics of danofloxacin against P. multocida was studied. The serum and lung tissue pharmacokinetics of danofloxacin were studied in healthy and P. multocida infected ducks following oral administration of a single dose of 5 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). The MIC, MBC and MPC of danofloxacin against P. multocida (C48-1 ) were 0.25, 1 and 3.2 μg/ml, res

We present the case of a 49-year-old woman admitted to our Acute Medical Unit with a 2-day history of fever, vomiting and confusion. The patient was alcohol dependent and had sustained several scratches from her pet cat, which her pet dog had licked. She deteriorated in the Emergency Department-developing high fever, worsening confusion and meningism. Blood cultures were taken and broad spectrum antibiotics commenced prior to CT scanning and diagnostic lumbar puncture. Blood cultures and CSF 16S ribosomal PCR confirmed a diagnosis of Pasteurella multocida bacteraemia and meningoencephalitis. T

Pasteurella species are part of the normal oral flora of cats. They are also a common cause of infection in this species and an important zoonotic agent. INFECTION IN CATS: Pasteurella species are commonly isolated from subcutaneous abscesses and pyothorax in cats. They may also cause secondary lower respiratory tract infection and have been associated with spinal empyema and meningoencephalomyelitis. INFECTION IN HUMANS: Disease in humans mainly occurs after a cat bite or scratch, but may also be transmitted via respiratory secretions from cats in close contact with a person. Signs of local i

Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Bibersteinia trehalosi have been identified in the lungs of pneumonic bighorn sheep (BHS; Ovis canadensis). Of these pathogens, M. haemolytica has been shown to consistently cause fatal pneumonia in BHS under experimental conditions. However, M. haemolytica has been isolated by culture less frequently than the other bacteria. We hypothesized that the growth of M. haemolytica is inhibited by other bacteria in the lungs of BHS. The objective of this study was to determine whether P. multocida inhibits the growth of M. haemolytica. Although in mo

Pasteurella multocida toxin (PMT) is a virulence factor responsible for the pathogenesis of some forms of pasteurellosis. The toxin activates G(q)- and G(12/13)-dependent pathways through the deamidation of a glutamine residue in the alpha-subunit of heterotrimeric GTPases. We recently reported the crystal structure of the C terminus (residues 575-1285) of PMT (C-PMT), which is composed of three domains (C1, C2, and C3), and that the C1 domain is involved in the localization of C-PMT to the plasma membrane, and the C3 domain possesses a cysteine protease-like catalytic triad. In this study, we

Thirty Pasteurella multocida strains isolated in Argentina from human and animal samples were identified, biotypified and characterized. Twenty-two (73%) strains were identified as P. multocida subsp. multocida, 5 (17%) as P. multocida subsp. gallicida, and 3 (10%) as P. multocida subsp. septica. All strains were grouped in 8 biotypes, and 70% of the strains presented capsular type A. The most frequent somatic serotypes were 1 (n:11) and 3 (n:9). P. multocida strains from swine source were resistant to tiamulin, streptomycin and tetracycline. Characterization of P. multocida strains isolated i

A laboratory woodchuck presented clinically with left-sided torticollis and a purulent exudate within the external auditory meatus of the left ear. Bacterial culture of the exudate resulted in a heavy growth of Pasteurella multocida. Treatment was initiated with topical and systemic antimicrobial compounds. There was no clinical improvement after 72 h of treatment, and euthanasia was elected. Radiographs correlated well with necropsy findings, confirming a diagnosis of otitis media; otitis interna was not confirmed but was suggested by the clinical presentation. We report a case of Pasteurella multocida meningitis in a 1-month-old baby exposed to close contact with two dogs and a cat but without any known history of injury by these animals. 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the isolate from the baby allowed identification at the subspecies level and pointed to the cat as a possible source of infection. Molecular typing of Pasteurella isolates from the animals, from the baby, and from unrelated animals clearly confirmed that the cat harbored the same P. multocida subsp. septica strain on its tonsils as the one isolated from the cerebrospinal fluid of the bab

PURPOSE: To examine an unusual cause of periorbital cellulitis, Pasteurella multocida.
METHODS: Case report, review of the literature.
RESULTS: We treated a 13-year-old previously healthy child who developed Pasteurella preseptal cellulitis secondary to a cat bite and cat scratch. After receiving a dose of intravenous antibiotics and starting oral antibiotics, the child had delayed onset of several abscesses around the right eye, with marked pain and erythema. After incision and drainage, he improved.
CONCLUSION: Pasteurella multocida is a rare but potentially serious cause of ocular infect

Animal bites are seen almost daily in the emergency department, and the majority heal without complication. Pasteurella multocida is frequently the causative organism of localized wound infections and cellulitis in this patient population. P. multocida infection is usually associated with close contact with pets, such as dogs and cats, that harbor this organism as normal oral flora. Meningitis and septic arthritis are very rare sequelae of P. multocida infection. This case report presents a patient with P. multocida bacteremia, meningitis, and septic arthritis developing together as a complica

In an experiment including 8 groups of 15 mice, the effect of migrating Ascaris suum larvae in the lungs on the establishment and pathogenicity of aerosol exposure to Pasteurella multocida was investigated. Following aerosol exposure to P. multocida, mice with migrating A. suum in their lungs developed more severe pneumonia and septicaemia than did parasite-free mice. The parasite-induced effect on bacterial pathogenicity was more marked for a non-toxin-producing P. multocida as compared with a toxin-producing strain of P. multocida, possibly due to the higher spontaneous pathogenicity of the

Turkeys given cell-free culture filtrate (CCF) of Pasteurella multocida strain R44/6 orally, via air sacs, or subcutaneously mixed 1:1 with incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA) at 6 and 9.5 weeks of age were compared with negative controls given bacteriologic medium and positive controls vaccinated with a commercial bacterin. At 13 weeks of age, serum antibody titers to P. multocida were detectable only in turkeys given CCF in IFA (low titers) and positive control turkeys (high titers), at which time turkeys were challenged orally with either the homologous strain or strain P-1059. INTRODUCTION: Pasteurella multocida is an important pathogen in many species of domestic and wild mammals, as well as birds. It is also a commensal in the nasopharynx of clinically healthy animals. The aim of the study was to characterise and classify field strains of P. multocida isolated from rabbits in Poland.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 115 field strains isolated from rabbits in 1999-2020 were used. The examined strains were evaluated morphologically and microscopically, and their ability to produce catalase and oxidase was determined. Identification of P. multocida strains was perfo
