Beta-amyloid cortical deposits are accompanied by the loss of serotonergic neurons in the dog.

Dogs may naturally suffer an age-related cognitive impairment that has aroused a great deal of interest, even beyond the field of the veterinary clinic. This canine senile dementia reproduces several key aspects of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including the presence of beta-amyloid (A beta) deposits in the cerebral cortex, neurodegeneration, and learning and memory impairments. In the present study, we have used unbiased stereological procedures to estimate the number of the dorsal and median raphe nuclei (DRN and MRN, respectively) serotonergic neurons immunolabeled with an anti-tryptophan hydro

Nodular hyperplasia of lymphoglandular complexes in dogs: A potential diagnostic pitfall for rectal masses.

Lymphoglandular complexes are components of the gut-associated lymphoid tissue that are characterized by submucosal lymphoid aggregates invested by projections of mucosal epithelium. Reports of pathology involving these structures are rare in both human and veterinary literature. Here, the authors report 2 cases of rectal masses excised from dogs following a period of tenesmus and hematochezia. In both animals, the masses were composed of lymphoid tissue closely encompassing tubuloacinar structures. Immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction antigen receptor rearrangement testing demon

Retrospective phylogenetic analyses of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples from the 2011 Rift Valley fever outbreak in South Africa, through sequencing of targeted regions.

The last major Rift Valley fever outbreak in South Africa was between 2008 and 2011. Viruses isolated between 2008 and 2010 were phylogenetically assigned to Lineage C, Lineage K and the novel lineage H. The 2011 outbreaks occurred primarily in the Eastern, Western and Northern Cape provinces, with no sequence data or phylogenetic relationship published. Samples from these outbreaks were submitted to the Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, University of Pretoria, for immunohistochemical confirmation of Rift Valley fever phlebovirus presence. These samples were formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded

Emerging and reemerging infections. Progress and challenges in the subspecialty of infectious disease pathology.

Emerging and reemerging infections are attracting greater attention from the public health and medical communities. Pathologists and other physicians are increasingly aware of the importance of the subspecialty of infectious disease pathology as a tool for diagnosis, surveillance, and research of emerging infections. In this communication, we describe the role that infectious disease pathologists have played during the last 2 years in broadening our understanding of selected emerging infections, including such examples as new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopat

Benign fibrous histiocytoma of prepuce in the mule.

Here we present a case of preputial benign fibrous histiocytoma in a 7-year-old mule. This case was treated surgically. Pathologic analysis and diagnosis of these lesions were based on a combination of light microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Histologically, the tumour was composed primarily of a storiform pattern of fibroblastic and poligonal cells. In immunohistochemistry, except for consistent immunoreactivity for vimentin, nearly all tumour cells were positive for CD68, S-100 protein, pan-cytokeratin, alpha-smooth muscle actin, and desmin. Evaluation of the toxicological safety and anti-inflammatory effects of Folium syringae powder using in vivo models.

Folium syringae (DXY), a widely used traditional Chinese medicinal component, can be used as an alternative for the reduction of veterinary antibiotic use. But few studies have explored its anti-inflammatory effects and toxicological safety. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effects and acute and subacute toxicity of orally administered DXY powder in mouse and rat models, respectively. The anti-inflammatory effect was evaluated by comparing the intensity of edema and granuloma to that induced by Macleaya cordata extract (positive control). The toxicological effects were evalua

Fatal traumatic injury patterns in free-roaming cats: an anatomopathological study of 40 cases.

BACKGROUND: Trauma is an important cause of death in domestic cats, particularly in animals with unrestricted outdoor access. However, necropsy-based studies focusing specifically on immediately fatal trauma in free-roaming cats remain limited. This study aimed to characterize fatal traumatic injuries in free-roaming cats through a retrospective anatomopathological review of feline necropsies performed over a 10-year period at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of the Universidade Federal da Paraíba, Brazil, based on gross findings, histopathology, and complementary imaging when available. Applicability of a canine prostate simulator (PROSIM-DOG) in clinical veterinary practices.

Simulators help students to perform procedures as many times as needed, in a controlled and non-stressful environment. It is crucial to include transrectal digital palpation in the physical examination of dogs for effective clinical diagnosis of prostate diseases, since this is a commonly found pathology in intact males. Training in prostate palpation may be hindered if students cannot assess and compare different types of prostates, a common situation that can be solved by training devices. A low-cost canine prostate simulator (PROSIM-DOG) was developed and tested by 167 veterinary science st

Inhibiting IL-6 in medicine: a new twist to sustain inhibition of his cytokine tin the therapy of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension.

Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a chronic, progressive disease characterized by an increase in blood pressure in the lungs' arteries. It can occur in a variety of species, including humans, dogs, cats, and horses. To date, PAH has a high mortality rate in both veterinary and human medicine, often due to complications such as heart failure. The complex pathological mechanisms of PAH involve multiple cellular signalling pathways at various levels. IL-6 is a powerful pleiotropic cytokine that regulates several phases of immune response, inflammation, and tissue remodelling. The hypothesi

Determination of reference intervals of venous blood gas and acid-base parameters in clinically healthy awake cats.

BACKGROUND: Venous blood gas and acid-base analysis is often performed in cats and requires appropriate reference intervals (RIs) for interpretation. The currently available RIs were created from small numbers of cats, while current guidelines suggest that a minimum number of 40 samples is required for the creation of an accurate/appropriate RI. KEY FINDINGS: In 41 healthy awake cats, pH, PvCO2, PvO2, sodium, potassium, ionized calcium, chloride, glucose, and plasma lactate concentrations were measured, while bicarbonate, standardized base excess, and anion gap were calculated. These data wer

Anatomy of the Brachycephalic Canine Hard Palate and Treatment of Acquired Palatitis Using CO2 Laser.

The goal of this article is to review the anatomy of the brachycephalic canine hard palate and provide a step-by-step guide on diagnosis and treatment of acquired palatitis using the CO2 surgical laser. Brachycephalic breed-related defects are not only limited to the upper airways, some dogs may develop secondary systemic or localized problems. An abnormality that is over-represented in some breeds such as boxers and bulldogs is prominent palatal rugae. The greater depth of the palatal rugae allows for the entrapment of plaque, food debris and hair. Thus, acquired palatitis or granulomatous le

Exhumation of Wistar rats experimentally exposed to the carbamate pesticides aldicarb and carbofuran: A pathological and toxicological study.

Exhumation is required for the investigation of suspicions deaths when a body is buried and is usually performed under court order. Exhumation of animals is not a routine practice in forensic pathology. In this study, 30 male 70-day-old Wistar rats were experimentally exposed to the carbamate pesticides aldicarb and carbofuran. Toxicological, macroscopic and microscopic examinations were performed. Groups of 3 animals (2 exposed and 1 control) were evaluated at 24h, 3days, 5days, 7days and 10days post-mortem. In histopathological examination, the brain, liver, lungs and kidneys were assessed,

Multi-site bone marrow core biopsy improves diagnostic accuracy in dogs with hematologic disease.

BACKGROUND: Spatial heterogeneity within bone marrow significantly affects diagnostic accuracy in human and veterinary medicine, where single-site sampling may fail to detect focal disease processes. However, optimal bone marrow sampling strategies for canine hematologic disease diagnosis remain unclear, representing a critical knowledge gap in veterinary diagnostic pathology. We hypothesized that multi-site bone marrow core sampling would provide superior diagnostic accuracy compared to current single-site sampling standards in canine patients. The primary aim was to evaluate diagnostic captu
