Factors associated with rapid improvement in visual acuity in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy after gene therapy.

PURPOSE: To analyse the factors associated with rapid and significant improvement in visual acuity in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) after gene therapy and explain the theory of this improvement. METHODS: We recruited 149 patients with LHON, who underwent gene therapy, and divided them into two groups according to the absence or presence of rapid and significant visual acuity improvements within 3 days of treatment. A bivariate logistic regression model was used to analyse relevant factors including age, the period between onset and treatment, baseline values of best

[Influence of docosahexaenoic acid treatment on visual acuity, visual field and bioelectric potential of the retina in patients with retinitis pigmentosa].

Retinitis pigmentosa (PR) is manifested by decreased vision, night blindness and narrowing of the visual field. In RP, the level of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in blood plasma and red blood cells is significantly reduced. The largest amount of DHA is contained in the retina (30-40% of phospholipids). DHA increases membrane permeability, accelerates the release of vital proteins and retinal enzymes, provides differentiation of photoreceptors, and slows down apoptosis. The introduction of DHA in isolation or in combination with other fatty acids into the body increases its concentration and can b

Delineation of the visual pathway in paediatric optic pathway glioma patients using probabilistic tractography, and correlations with visual acuity.

BACKGROUND: Radiological biomarkers which correlate with visual function are needed to improve the clinical management of optic pathway glioma (OPG) patients. Currently, these are not available using conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences. The aim of this study was to determine whether diffusion MRI could be used to delineate the entire optic pathway in OPG patients, and provide imaging biomarkers within this pathway which correlate with a patient's visual acuity (VA). METHODS: Multi-shell diffusion MRI data were acquired in a cohort of paediatric OPG patients, along with VA

Dynamic visual acuity during head-thrust test in canal planes in healthy subjects and patients with vestibular neuritis.

CONCLUSIONS: Dynamic visual acuity (DVA) during the head-thrust test (htDVA) is reliable in normal subjects, having a high specificity for the horizontal canal, so it may be useful to monitor vestibular rehabilitation in patients with vestibular neuritis (VN). OBJECTIVE: To obtain reference values for htDVA in healthy individuals and to investigate the potential application in subjects with unilateral VN. METHODS: A total of 73 healthy individuals and 50 patients with unilateral VN were included. The DVA test was performed by adjusting a sensor on the subject's head to measure head velocity.
