Predictors of psychiatric readmission among patients with bipolar disorder at an academic safety-net hospital.

OBJECTIVE: Even with treatment, approximately one-third of patients with bipolar disorder relapse into depression or mania within 1 year. Unfavorable clinical outcomes for patients with bipolar disorder include increased rates of psychiatric hospitalization and functional impairment. However, only a few studies have examined predictors of psychiatric hospital readmission in a sample of patients with bipolar disorder. The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of psychiatric readmission within 30 days, 90 days and 1 year of discharge among patients with bipolar disorder using a concept

Readmissions after pancreaticoduodenectomy: efforts need to focus on patient expectations and nonhospital medical care.

Readmissions after operations are a burden. This study was undertaken to determine factors predicting readmissions after pancreaticoduodenectomy. Since 1991, patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy have been prospectively followed. Nineteen per cent of 913 patients were readmitted within 30 days after discharge from pancreaticoduodenectomy. The causes for readmissions were reviewed. Median data are presented. All patients had preoperative comorbidities; most common were cardiovascular (26%), gastrointestinal (23%), or endocrine (15%). Twenty-nine per cent had extended pancreaticoduodenecto

Central sleep apnea is a predictor of cardiac readmission in hospitalized patients with systolic heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized heart failure patients have a high readmission rate. We sought to determine the independent risk due to central sleep apnea (CSA) of readmission in patients with systolic heart failure (SHF). METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a prospective observational cohort study of hospitalized patients with SHF. Patients underwent sleep studies during their hospitalization and were followed for 6 months to determine their rate of cardiac readmissions; 784 consecutive patients were included; 165 patients had CSA and 139 had no sleep-disordered breathing (SDB); the remainder had obstru

First admission young adult patients to a state hospital: relative risk for rapid readmission.

High readmission rates by young adult patients to state hospitals represents a major service utilization problem for the public mental health system. By identifying those patients who have an increase risk for rapid readmission, effective community-based services could be developed to help reduce utilization of costly hospital services. A nonconcurrent prospective study of 210 first admission young adult patients admitted to a state hospital was conducted to ascertain the incidence of readmission within 180 days of discharge from the index admission (rapid readmission), and to establish relati

Prevalence and Risk Factors of Readmission Among Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases in Africa: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with a disproportionately high burden in Africa. Readmissions among patients present an additional challenge. This systematic review aimed to map evidence on the prevalence and risk factors of readmissions among patients with CVDs in Africa. METHOD: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. Comprehensive searches were carried out in PubMed Central, Scopus, JSTOR, CINAHL and other databases. Studies published in English from January 2000 that reported on the prevalence an

Association of Frailty Assessed by the Kihon Checklist Upon the Readmission of Older Patients With Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Frailty is highly prevalent and associated with a poor prognosis in older patients with heart failure (HF). In this study, we investigated the association between frailty, as assessed by the Kihon Checklist (KCL), and readmissions in older patients with HF. METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of all consecutive older patients hospitalized for HF aged ≥65 years between September 2016 and March 2018. The KCL was based on the health condition and living situation of each patient prior to hospitalization and was categorized into 4 groups based on quartiles o

Development and validation of a predictive model for readmission of major depressive disorder patients with suicide attempts.

The study aimed to investigate the determinants associated with readmission in first-hospitalised major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with suicide attempts. The study included a cohort of 3977 patients diagnosed with MDD, as retrieved from the hospital information system (HIS). The data were split into a training set and a validation set using R software. To develop a stepwise regression model, the multivariate logistic analysis included significant factors (p threshold <0.2 in univariate analysis).(1) There was a significant difference in the incidence of readmission between first-hospit

Predictors of heart failure readmission and all-cause mortality in patients with acute heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Predischarge risk stratification of patients with acute heart failure (AHF) could facilitate tailored treatment and follow-up, however, simple scores to predict short-term risk for HF readmission or death are lacking. METHODS: We sought to develop a congestion-focused risk score using data from a prospective, two-center observational study in adults hospitalized for AHF. Laboratory data were collected on admission. Patients underwent physical examination, 4-zone, and in a subset 8-zone, lung ultrasound (LUS), and echocardiography at baseline. A second LUS was performed before disc

Reoperation, Readmission, and Postoperative Bleeding in Pediatric Cerebral Palsy Patients Undergoing Spinal Arthrodesis.

Background Cerebral palsy (CP) is one of the most common neuromuscular disorders in children, and spinal abnormalities are vastly more common in people with CP compared to the general population. Further investigation is needed to improve our understanding of the perioperative factors that place children with CP at greater risk of postoperative complications. This study aims to investigate (1) whether pediatric CP patients have higher rates of postoperative complications after spinal fusion and (2) risk factors for postoperative bleeding, readmission, and reoperation. Methodology The 2019 Amer

Clinical and biochemical determinants of length of stay, readmission and recurrence in patients admitted with diabetic ketoacidosis.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) related admissions poses a significant burden on the healthcare systems globally. However, data regarding the predictors of healthcare resource utilization in DKA is limited and inconsistent. This study aimed to identify key predictors of hospital length of stay (LOS), readmission and recurrent DKA episodes. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of all DKA admissions from 2015 to 2021 across four hospitals in Qatar. The primary outcomes were the length of stay (LOS), 90-day readmission and 6-month an

The Impact of Principal Diagnosis on Readmission Risk among Patients Hospitalized for Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

Coding variation distorts performance/outcome statistics not eliminated by risk adjustment. Among 1596 community-acquired pneumonia patients hospitalized from 1998 to 2012 identified using an evidence-based algorithm, the authors measured the association of principal diagnosis (PD) with 30-day readmission, stratified by Pneumonia Severity Index risk class. The 152 readmitted patients were more ill (Pneumonia Severity Index class V 38.8% versus 25.8%) and less likely to have a pneumonia PD (52.6% versus 69.9%). Among patients with PDs of pneumonia, respiratory failure, sepsis, and aspiration, m
