Effect of genotype and sex on carcass composition, physicochemical properties, texture and microstructure of meat from parent stock laying hens after the reproductive period.

1. The aim of this study was a detailed evaluation of the influence of genotype and sex on carcass traits and meat quality (chemical composition, physicochemical properties, texture and structure) of spent hens (parent stock of laying hens after the reproductive period).2. After slaughter (83 weeks of age), the eviscerated carcass weight and the proportion of carcass components were determined. Analyses were performed for 24 h post-mortem pH (pH24), electrical conductivity (EC24), cooking loss, colour parameters (L*, a* and b*) and composition of breast and leg muscles. Texture and microstruct

Operative treatment of irreparable rupture of the subscapularis.

Between 1980 and 1994, 221 shoulders with recurrent anterior glenohumeral subluxation or dislocation were reconstructed at our institution. At the time of the operation, thirteen shoulders were found to have an irreparable injury of the subscapularis muscle, which we believed to be a contributing factor to the ongoing instability. All but three of the thirteen patients had had two to six previous reconstructions. Operative treatment of the irreparable rupture included a dynamic muscle transfer using the pectoralis major in seven shoulders, the pectoralis minor in five, and both of these muscle

Atypical Origin of the Pectoral Nerves: Morphological Insights for Orthopedic, Reconstructive, and Trauma Surgeons.

Anatomical variations in the brachial plexus can significantly affect upper-extremity surgical procedures. This report highlights a rare case where both pectoralis muscles receive accessory innervation. The pectoralis major exhibited three additional branches stemming directly from the anterior divisions of the superior and middle trunks, effectively bypassing the lateral cord. The pectoralis minor likewise demonstrated variant innervation, receiving two additional branches. One was an unexpected confluence in which a branch destined for the pectoralis major coursed through and innervated the

Mild degree of Poland's Syndrome reconstruction with customized silicone prosthesis.

Poland's Syndrome consists of unilateral absence of the pectoralis major muscle, ipsilateral symbrachydaktylia, and occasionally associated other malformations of the anterior chest wall and breast. Mild Poland's Syndrome is characterized by asymmetry of the breasts with partial absence of the pectoralis major muscle. This report describes a 19-year-old man with unilateral hypoplasia of the breast, absence of the anterior axillary fold, and absence of the pectoralis major muscle. The patient's chest wall was reconstructed with a customized silicone prosthesis. This reconstructive technique is

Insertion abnormality of bilateral pectoralis minimus.

Bilateral insertion abnormality of pectoralis minimus (sterno-costo-coracoidian muscle) muscle was examined. The variant muscle was lying under the pectoralis major muscle and was medial to the pectoralis minor muscle. This muscle started from the first costal cartilage to the manubrium sterni and ended in the upper surface of the shoulder joint on the right side. On the opposite side, it took origin from the second costal cartilage to the manubrium sterni and the second costochondral joint, afterwards became a tendinous structure and divided into two on the coracoid process. The thicker part

Unilateral ectopic insertion of the pectoralis minor: Clinical and functional significance.

During routine dissection of a 70-year-old female, we observed a unilateral ectopic insertion of the left pectoralis minor muscle. The tendon was cord-like and passed through a tendon sheath superior to the coracoid process to insert on the greater tubercle of the humerus. Additionally, an aponeurosis extended from the distal aspect of the muscle's tendon and passed medially to insert near the base of the coracoid process. This is the first report of an additional aponeurosis extending from the tendon of the pectoralis minor and attaching to the coracoid process. We also observed that the pect

Atypical shoulder muscle activation in multidirectional instability.

OBJECTIVE: Surface and intramuscular electromyography was used to investigate shoulder muscle activity in subjects with multidirectional instability (MDI). METHODS: Subjects (seven MDI, 11 control) performed repetitive shoulder abduction/adduction, flexion/extension and internal/external rotation movements on an isokinetic dynamometer. The activity of the deltoid, infraspinatus, supraspinatus, latissimus dorsi, and pectoralis major muscles were recorded using double-differential surface and intramuscular fine-wire electrodes. A repeated measures analysis of variance evaluated group difference

Anatomic evaluation of the subcoracoid pectoralis major transfer in human cadavers.

Subcoracoid transfer of the pectoralis major has recently been described as a reconstruction for subscapularis insufficiency. The purpose of this study was to examine the surgically relevant anatomy of this transfer. The importance of understanding this anatomy was recently highlighted to us following our encounter with musculocutaneous neuropraxia in 2 patients after transfer of the entire pectoralis major, one deep to the musculocutaneous nerve. Dissections were performed on 20 fresh, whole human cadavers in which the entire pectoralis major muscle, medial and lateral pectoral nerves, and mu

Insertion sites of the muscles attached to the clavicle: a cadaveric study of the clavicle.

BACKGROUND: Clavicle fractures are common injuries, especially in young, active individuals. Operative treatment is recommended for completely displaced clavicle shaft fractures, and plate fixation is stronger than the use of intramedullary nails. Few studies have reported on iatrogenic injuries to the muscle attached to the clavicle during fracture surgery. The aim of this study was to clarify the area of the insertion sites of muscles attached to the clavicle in Japanese cadavers using gross anatomy and three-dimensional (3D) analysis. We also aimed to compare the effects of anterior plate t

Anatomical Relationship of the Axillary Nerve to the Pectoralis Major Tendon Insertion.

Axillary nerve injury is a risk of the deltopectoral approach to the proximal humerus. The anterior motor branch is potentially vulnerable during subdeltoid dissection. Insertion of the pectoralis major tendon is an easily identifiable landmark on the humerus. This anatomical study explored whether the superior aspect of the pectoralis major tendon is a useful landmark for localizing the anterior motor branch of the axillary nerve as it travels under the lateral and anterior deltoid muscle. A total of 30 fresh-frozen human bilateral cadaveric upper extremities were examined. A deltopectoral ap

Ultrasound assessment of the distal pectoralis major: identification of two distinct tendons.

PURPOSE: Distal pectoralis major pathology is complex. Recent anatomical findings have identified the deltopectoral tendon, a structure distinct from the pectoralis major tendon, originating from the clavicular bundle and merging with the distal deltoid tendon. This study aims to characterize the deltopectoral tendon, assess its consistency, and define its relationship to the pectoralis major tendon to improve the understanding of distal pectoralis major pathology. METHODS: This study consisted of a prospective, monocentric, observational cohort design. Forty-six volunteer subjects with no hi

Preservation of pectoralis minor in axillary clearance for breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: There has been a gradual shift away from radical surgery towards conservation treatment for breast cancer. The pectoralis minor muscle is increasingly preserved in women undergoing axillary clearance as part of either breast conservation or mastectomy. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted to determine the axillary node count in 578 patients who underwent axillary clearance, 276 with removal of pectoralis minor and 302 who had the muscle preserved. RESULTS: The mean number of nodes excised in the group who had pectoralis minor excised was 25.5 (range 8-50) compared with 24

Muscle flap reconstruction of pediatric poststernotomy wound infections.

Sternal wound infections following pediatric open-heart procedures occur infrequently. Four of our last 600 consecutive pediatric open-heart median sternotomies (1991 to 1996) required muscle flap reconstruction for treatment of deeply infected sternotomy wounds. Risk factors included multiple sternotomies, previous superficial infection, and immunocompromised states. Two patients were closed with bilateral pectoralis muscle flaps. The 2 other patients were closed with vertical rectus abdominis muscle flaps; 1 including an attached skin paddle. While the pectoralis major muscle flap is the fir

Treatment of Persistent Pectoralis Minor Hyperactivity and Compensatory Trapezius Hypertrophy Using Arthroscopic Release: A Case Report.

CASE: We report on a 20-year-old male patient with shoulder pain and severely altered scapulothoracic kinematics due to pectoralis minor muscle hyperactivity and compensatory trapezius hypertrophy. After failed conservative treatment, an isolated arthroscopic release of the pectoralis minor tendon was performed, resulting in substantial pain relief and improved range of motion in the 6-week follow-up and sustained benefits 6 years later. CONCLUSION: Persistent pectoralis minor hyperactivity may be the cause of altered scapulothoracic movement, resulting in pronounced hypertrophy of the trapez

Migration-associated changes in hormones and muscle physiology of migratory redheaded buntings (Emberiza bruniceps).

Long distance migration in birds requires dynamic remodelling of flight muscle induced by behavioural, endocrine and metabolic adjustments. Here, we studied redheaded buntings in the nonmigratory and migratory state to assess changes in plasma hormones, muscle fibre diameter, lipid droplet accumulation and gene expression in the pectoralis and supracoracoideus muscles. We investigated genes that are involved in (1) muscle growth and atrophy, and (2) fatty acid transport and metabolism. Long-day exposure induced nighttime migratory restlessness, increased body mass, fat and muscle scores, and e

Sternotomy wounds: rectus flap versus modified pectoral reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Infected sternotomy wounds occur in 0.5 to 8.4 percent of open heart operations. They are complex problems, with a mortality rate of 8.1 to 14.8 percent despite flap closure. For closure, the pectoralis major flap has had considerable success. However, in providing coverage to the lower third of the sternum, it may be deficient. Modifications to improve closure have included a rectus flap or an anterior rectus fascia extension to the pectoralis flap. METHODS: This retrospective study of 130 consecutive sternotomy wounds compares 41 bilateral pectoralis major muscle flaps with a mo

The metabolic characteristics of susceptibility to wooden breast disease in chickens with high feed efficiency.

This study was conducted to characterize metabolic differences between high feed efficiency (HFE) and low feed efficiency (LFE) chickens to investigate why feed efficient chickens are more susceptible to muscle abnormalities such as wooden breast disease. Gene expression profiles were generated by RNA sequencing of pectoralis major muscle samples from 10 HFE and 13 LFE broiler chickens selected from a modern broiler population. Metabolism-associated differentially expressed genes were identified and interpreted by Ingenuity Pathway Analysis and literature mining. Our RNA-seq data indicate decr

Analysis of Respiratory Muscles Density in Different Age Groups Using CT Scans.

Currently, there is lack of quantitative methods to assess respiratory muscle density, both in healthy patients and in patients with sarcopenia. In this study, we assess respiratory muscle density in patients with no known diagnosis of sarcopenia using CT images. We extracted the distributions of muscle density, defined in Hounsfield units, in the pectoralis major, pectoralis minor, intercostal and serratus muscles in young, middle-aged, and elderly adults. Results showed consistent changes across respiratory muscles in terms of density distributions in the different age groups, specifically a

Radicality effect of adding an interpectoral to a subpectoral approach for dissection of level III axillary lymph nodes in breast cancer.

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: The extent of axillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer treatment is tailored to each patient. When the surgeon assumes that full dissection, including level III, is needed, there are basically two ways for reaching the apical nodes while preserving the pectoralis muscles: a subpectoral approach, below the joined pectoralis muscles, and another that includes an additional interpectoral dissection between the muscles. We conducted a study to evaluate the radicality of dissection using these two approaches. METHODS: To determine whether the harvest of level III axill
