Ethnoracial Discrimination and Subsequent Cognitive Functioning Among Adolescents: A 2-Month Follow-up Study.

INTRODUCTION: Ethnoracial discrimination is a persistent risk factor for adolescents' developmental problems, yet limited research has examined its prospective association with adolescents' cognitive functioning. The current research employed a two-wave design to investigate whether ethnoracial discrimination predicted subsequent adolescent cognitive functioning and to explore whether these associations differed between White adolescents and adolescents from ethnoracially minoritized backgrounds. METHODS: The sample consisted of 113 adolescents (mean age = 14.85 years, SD = 0.41 years; 36% bo

Striving and thriving: Gender differences in the effects of climbing the socioeconomic ladder on stress and discrimination.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests upward socioeconomic mobility ("striving") may result in worse physical health. It has been hypothesized that striving might result in greater stress and discrimination, but prior observational evidence of this has been mixed. METHODS: We analyzed data from The RISE UP study, a natural experimental study of 1270 low-income students in Los Angeles who were offered entrance to high-performing charter high schools via a random lottery. We compared lottery winners to those waitlisted, enabling objective assessment of striving with less confounding and selectio

Acceptance of disability and its correlates.

In a sample of 1,266 U.S. adults with disabilities, relationships were examined between acceptance of disability and (a) demographic characteristics (age, gender, race, education, marital status, and income); (b) disability conditions (disability onset, multiple disabilities, and chronic pain); and (c) other psychosocial factors (self-esteem, emotional support, perceived discrimination, and hostility). Self-esteem and emotional support from family and friends played important roles in the participants' adjustment to disability. Furthermore, perceived social discrimination against people with d

Stereotypes about people living with HIV: implications for perceptions of HIV risk and testing frequency among at-risk populations.

Although research continues to demonstrate that HIV stigma is associated with decreased HIV testing, the psychological processes implicated in this association remain unclear. The authors address this gap by differentiating between the HIV stigma mechanisms of stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. They hypothesize that HIV stereotypes specifically, more so than prejudice or discrimination, are associated with HIV testing among at-risk populations. Ninety-three HIV-negative people receiving methadone maintenance therapy at a clinic in the northeastern United States participated by complet

Impact of Offender Schizophrenia Diagnosis on Public Perceptions of Crime and Punishment.

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) make up only 6% of the U.S. population but represent up to 40% of those incarcerated. This overrepresentation is likely due to systemic discrimination, exemplified by people with SMI being twice as likely to be arrested as those without SMI. This study continued examining this discrimination by investigating the impact of one SMI, schizophrenia, on public perceptions of crime. Participants viewed and evaluated two criminal case records where the offender either had schizophrenia or did not have schizophrenia. Contrary to hypotheses, offenders witho

The impact of stressors on second generation Indian Residential School survivors.

From 1863 to 1996, many Aboriginal children in Canada were forced to attend Indian Residential Schools (IRSs), where many experienced neglect, abuse, and the trauma of separation from their families and culture. The present study examined the intergenerational impact of IRS exposure on depressive symptomatology in a convenience sample of 143 First Nations adults. IRS experiences had adverse intergenerational effects in that First Nations adults who had a parent attend IRS (n = 67) reported greater depressive symptoms compared to individuals whose parents did not attend (n = 76). Parental IRS a

Discrimination and material-need insecurities intersect in association with poor mental health among youth and young adults with type 1 diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about how perceived discrimination and material-need insecurities jointly contribute to poor mental health among youth and young adults (YYA) with diabetes. We examined how these factors intersect to influence mental health among YYA with type 1 diabetes. METHOD: Analyses included 829 YYA with type 1 diabetes from the SEARCH Food Security Cohort study. Classification tree analysis identified patterns among perceived discrimination, material-need insecurities, demographic, and socioeconomic characteristics that distinguish between moderate-to-severe and minimal-to-mi

Moderation of the effects of discrimination-induced affective responses on health outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of the study was to examine differential mediation of long-term effects of discrimination on health behaviour and health status by internalising (anxiety and depression) and externalising (hostility and anger), and to explore moderation of these effects, specifically, by the presence of support networks and coping tendencies. DESIGN: The current analyses employed structural equation modelling of five waves of data from Black female participants of the Family and Community Health Study over 11 years (M age 37-48). MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The main outcome variables were hea

Supporting recovery: Intersections of health, belonging, and help seeking after a campus mass casualty event.

Mass casualty events (MCE), such as campus shootings, can severely impact the mental health of students, faculty, and staff. This study examined the psychological effects of an MCE at a minority-serving institution and explored how sense of belonging, cardiorespiratory fitness, and treatment preferences influenced recovery. To measure the impact of the MCE on mental health an anonymous survey was administered four to five months post-MCE to university students, faculty and staff. Within the survey, participants were asked to retrospectively report their depression (PHQ-9) and anxiety (GAD-7) s

Adaptation and psychometric properties of the Spanish Perceived Ageism Questionnaire (PAQ).

OBJECTIVES: Perceived ageism is a critical variable for understanding mental health and wellbeing across the lifespan. The Perceived Ageism Questionnaire (PAQ) assesses subjective experiences of both negative and positive perceived ageism through dimensions of stereotypes, prejudice and discrimination. The aim of this study was to (a) adapt the PAQ into Spanish and analyze its psychometric properties and (b) examine the associations between perceived ageism, mental health, self-perceptions of aging and age. METHOD: A sample of 404 adults living in Spain (aged 18 to 95 years old) completed the

Childhood Mistreatment, PTSD, and Substance Use in Latinx: The Role of Discrimination in an Omitted-Variable Bias.

BACKGROUND: Childhood mistreatment (CM) has been associated with adult posttraumatic disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUDs) in the general population. Few studies have examined the role of PTSD in the CM-SUD association among Latinx. This cross-sectional study evaluated a theory-driven conceptual model with a specific focus on the impact of perceived discrimination, which may interfere with these associations. METHOD: Using a nationally representative sample and structural equation modeling (SEM), the study evaluated the mediation of PTSD in the CM-SUD link, adjusting for or omitt

A cross-sectional study of the relationship between community dwelling older adults' self-perceived frailty and their electronic frailty index score.

BACKGROUND: Qualitative studies suggest discrepancies between older adults’ self-perceived and measured frailty. Quantification of this is limited. This study investigated the relationship between older adults’ self-perceived frailty and a measure of frailty derived from electronic heath record data (electronic Frailty Index [eFI] score). The eFI is derived routinely from available primary care electronic health record data and is based on the cumulative deficit model of frailty. METHODS: One thousand people (≥ 70 years), randomly selected from a GP practice, were sent a survey, asking them to

Links between ethnic discrimination, mental health, protective factors, and hair cortisol concentrations in asylum seekers living in Germany.

Objective: Asylum seekers often experience ethnic discrimination on the flight or in the host country, which may be associated with chronic stress and impaired mental health. Dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, a known physiological correlate of chronic stress, can be assessed using hair cortisol concentrations (HCC). The present study aimed to investigate how different forms of perceived ethnic discrimination are associated with mental health outcomes, HCC, and protective factors in asylum seekers living in Germany. Methods: Somatic symptoms (PHQ-15), symptoms of posttrau

Pre-migration Trauma Exposure and Psychological Distress for Asian American Immigrants: Linking the Pre- and Post-migration Contexts.

Drawing on the life course perspective and the assumptive world theory, this paper examines whether pre-migration trauma exposure is associated with psychological distress through post-migration perceived discrimination for Asian American immigrants. The study is based on cross-sectional data from the National Latino and Asian American Study (N = 1639). Structural equation model is used to estimate the relationship between pre-migration trauma, post-migration perceived discrimination, and psychological distress. Additional models are estimated to explore possible variations across ethnic group
