Curcumin-loaded Pickering emulsion stabilized by Spanish mackerel meat-hyaluronic acid and its application in Spam.

This study aimed to prepare Pickering emulsions stabilized by the complexes of Spanish mackerel meat (SMM) and hyaluronic acid (HA) for the encapsulation of curcumin (Cur), and explore its application as a fat replacer in Spam. The SMM-HA complex was formed through hydrogen bonding. When the HA concentration was 0.75%, the three-phase contact angle of SMM-HA reached 88.2°, which was close to 90°, indicating its excellent emulsifying capability. Pickering emulsion prepared by SMM-HA (0.75%) with an oil phase fraction of 60% exhibited superior rheological properties, and a cross-linked network s

A comparative analysis of serum biochemistry, gene expression, and gut microbiota in domestication-susceptible and domestication-resistant mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi).

The feeding behavior of mandarin fish (Siniperca chuatsi) is unique in that it exclusively preys on live fish throughout its life. Feed-based mandarin fish production has become central to aquaculture, yet domestication success remains low. This study examines intrinsic factors underlying poor feed acceptance in mandarin fish, alongside traits of domestication-susceptible individuals (group A) through a comprehensive comparison. The results showed that: compared to domestication-resistant mandarin fish (group B): (1) the glucose content and amylase activity in the serum of group A are signific

Cultivation of all-male large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) and evaluation of its temperature tolerance and hypoxia tolerance.

Mono-sex cultures of all-male large yellow croaker (Larimichthys crocea) offers clear advantages for boosting economic returns in aquaculture. The purpose of this study was to breed all-male large yellow croaker. To achieve this goal, we first successfully induced sex reversal of YY supermale fish to produce YY pseudo-female through adding 17β-estradiol (E2, 120 mg/kg). These YY pseudo-female were then crossed with YY supermale fish to establish a pure-bred YY supermale fish population. Subsequently, the YY supermale fish were hybridized with female fish to produce all-male fish. During the br

Retinal ganglion cell topography in the masked greenling Hexagrammos octogrammus (Pallas, 1814) (Pisces, Scorpaeniformes, Hexagrammidae).

The spatial arrangement of retinal neurons determines to a certain extent visual acuity and sensitivity. Despite a large number of studies dealing with retinal topography, there are gaps in our knowledge on the issue. We addressed the spatial arrangement of retinal ganglion cells in the masked greenling, a marine demersal fish. The combined proportion of displaced amacrine cells and glia was 17.63%. The spatial density of ganglion cells was lowest (1900-2500 cells/mm2) in the ventronasal periphery. It increased centripetally to form a horizontal visual streak situated dorsal to the optic disc.

Inhibitory Effect of Acetaminophen on Ocular Pigmentation and its Relationship with Thyroxine in Zebrafish Embryos.

Acetaminophen (N-acetyl-p-aminophenol; APAP) is one of the most widely used analgesics. To examine the toxicity of APAP, we used zebrafish embryos as model animals to detect the effect of APAP on the thyroid system of zebrafish embryos. The zebrafish embryos were exposed to APAP from 4 h post fertilization (4 hpf) until observation. The experimental results showed that APAP caused pericardial edema and decreased pigmentation in the zebrafish embryos or larvae. The APAP treatment caused a decrease in the expression of tpo and thrβ in the zebrafish at 36 and 72 hpf. The transcriptomic analysis f

Behavioral Profiling of Zebrafish (Danio rerio) Larvae: Activity, Anxiety, Avoidance, and Startle Response.

Apart from morphological, biochemical, and genetic alterations induced by teratogen compounds, there is an increased interest in characterizing behavioral alterations. Behavior is a sensitive parameter that can provide information regarding developmental disruptions non-invasively. Behavioral disturbances interfere with animals' capacity to cope with the environment, having an impact on the organism's life. Hereby, behavioral assays consisting of recording larvae in multi-well plates, Petri dishes, or cuvettes and video analysis using adequate software, allowing teratogen screening of behavior

Temporal variation in helminth infracommunities of the Gafftopsail pompano, Trachinotus rhodopus (Pisces: Carangidae) off the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Temporal variation of the helminth infracommunity structure in the Gafftopsail pompano Trachinotus rhodopus was studied during bi-monthly revisions of samples collected offshore from Puerto Ángel, Oaxaca (Mexican Pacific) in 2018. In total, 110 specimens of T. rhodopus were subjected to a parasitic review. Helminths found were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level (six species and three genera) by means of morphological and molecular data. Attributes of the helminth infracommunities are described through statistical analyses, showing stability in terms of their richness throughout

The role of dietary vitamin A in mechanisms of cataract development in the teleost lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L).

Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L) are highly prone to cataract development in the wild and in culture. There is evidence that cataract in farmed fish is related to nutrition. However, both the nutrients and the mechanisms involved in cataract development in lumpfish are not clear. Here we investigated the mechanisms involved and the role of dietary vitamin A in cataract development in a cultured lumpfish population. Cultured lumpfish were fed three diets differing only in vitamin A supplementation level (5000, 15,000 and 120,000 IU/kg) over an 18-month period, and fish weight, cataract frequenci

Validation and Functional Analysis of Reference and Tissue-Specific Genes in Adipose Tissue of Freshwater Drum, Aplodinotus grunniens, under Starvation and Hypothermia Stress.

Adipose tissue is critical to the growth, development, and physiological health of animals. Reference genes play an essential role in normalizing the expression of mRNAs. Tissue-specific genes are preferred for their function and expression in specific tissues or cell types. Identification of these genes contributes to understanding the tissue-gene relationship and the etiology and discovery of new tissue-specific targets. Therefore, reference genes and tissue-specific genes in the adipose tissue of Aplodinotus grunniens were identified to explore their function under exogenous starvation (1 d

Mechanistic toxicity and growth abnormalities mediated by subacute exposure to environmentally relevant levels of benzophenone-3 in clown anemonefish (Amphiprion ocellaris).

Benzophenone-3 (BP-3) is a UV filter that is ubiquitously present in the environment due to its photostability and degradation resistance and has wide applications in personal care products. BP-3 will eventually be discharged into the ocean. Studies shows BP-3 interferes with endocrine system of aquatic organisms, especially fish. However, the toxicity and mechanisms of subacute exposure of the coral reef fish to BP-3 remain elusive. Here, we exposed the one-month-old clown anemonefish to BP-3 at 1 and 10 μg/L for 14 and 28 days, respectively. After chronic exposure, the effects of BP-3 on the

A NEW SPECIES OF BOTHRIOCEPHALUS (CESTODA: BOTHRIOCEPHALIDAE) FROM LEPOMIS SPP. (ACTINOPTERYGII: CENTRARCHIDAE) IN NORTH AMERICA.

Based on morphological and molecular data, a new species of tapeworm, Bothriocephalus kupermani n. sp., is described from pumpkinseed, Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) (type host), and green sunfish, L. cyanellus Rafinesque, 1819 (Actinopterygii: Centrarchidae) in the United States. The new species differs from its North American congeners mainly in the shape of its scolex, which is almost rectangular in dorsoventral and lateral views (nearly parallel margins in the bothrial region), with shallow, wide bothria, and by an extensive field of vitelline follicles that are also variably present, a

Expression of Antimicrobic Peptide Piscidin1 in Gills Mast Cells of Giant Mudskipper Periophthalmodon schlosseri (Pallas, 1770).

The amphibious teleost Giant mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri, Pallas 1770) inhabit muddy plains and Asian mangrove forests. It spends more than 90% of its life outside of the water, using its skin, gills, and buccal-pharyngeal cavity mucosa to breathe in oxygen from the surrounding air. All vertebrates have been found to have mast cells (MCs), which are part of the innate immune system. These cells are mostly found in the mucous membranes of the organs that come in contact with the outside environment. According to their morphology, MCs have distinctive cytoplasmic granules that are re

Sticky, stickier and stickiest - a comparison of adhesive performance in clingfish, lumpsuckers and snailfish.

The coastal waters of the North Pacific are home to the northern clingfish (Gobiesox maeandricus), Pacific spiny lumpsucker (Eumicrotremus orbis) and marbled snailfish (Liparis dennyi) - three fishes that have evolved ventral adhesive discs. Clingfish adhesive performance has been studied extensively, but relatively little is known about the performance of other sticky fishes. Here, we compared the peak adhesive forces and work to detachment of clingfish, lumpsuckers and snailfish on surfaces of varying roughness and over ontogeny. We also investigated the morphology of their adhesive discs th

Multistressor global change drivers reduce hatch and viability of Lingcod embryos, a benthic egg layer in the California Current System.

Early life history stages of marine fishes are often more susceptible to environmental stressors than adult stages. This vulnerability is likely exacerbated for species that lay benthic egg masses bound to substrate because the embryos cannot evade locally unfavorable environmental conditions. Lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus), a benthic egg layer, is an ecologically and economically significant predator in the highly-productive California Current System (CCS). We ran a flow-through mesocosm experiment that exposed Lingcod eggs collected from Monterey Bay, CA to conditions we expect to see in the c

Acute morbidity and mortality of marlins (family Istiophoridae) in hook-and-line fisheries have been studied; however, there has been little or no investigation of the skeletal injuries incurred from terminal tackles that could lead to decreased rates of postrelease survival. The objective of this study was to evaluate skeletal injuries in recreationally angled Atlantic Blue Marlin Makaira nigricans from the 2019 Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in Morehead City, North Carolina. We examined heads of six Blue Marlin that were angled using artificial lures rigged with J-hooks and harvested for we

A Tail of Four Fishes: An Analysis of Kinematics and Material Properties of Elongate Fishes.

The elongate body plan is present in many groups of fishes, and this morphology dictates functional consequences seen in swimming behavior. Previous work has shown that increasing the number of vertebrae, or decreasing the intervertebral joint length, in a fixed length artificial system increases stiffness. Tails with increased stiffness can generate more power from tail beats, resulting in an increased mean swimming speed. This demonstrates the impacts of morphology on both material properties and kinematics, establishing mechanisms for form contributing to function. Here, we wanted to invest
