[Distorted cognition of bodily sensations in subtypes of social anxiety].

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between subtypes of social anxiety and distorted cognition of bodily sensations. The package of questionnaires including the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) was administered to 582 undergraduate students. To identify subtypes of social anxiety, cluster analysis was conducted using scores of the SPS and SIAS. Five clusters were identified and labeled as follows: Generalized type characterized by intense anxiety in most social situations, Non-anxious type characterized by low anxiety levels in

Anxiety onset in adolescents: a machine-learning prediction.

Recent longitudinal studies in youth have reported MRI correlates of prospective anxiety symptoms during adolescence, a vulnerable period for the onset of anxiety disorders. However, their predictive value has not been established. Individual prediction through machine-learning algorithms might help bridge the gap to clinical relevance. A voting classifier with Random Forest, Support Vector Machine and Logistic Regression algorithms was used to evaluate the predictive pertinence of gray matter volumes of interest and psychometric scores in the detection of prospective clinical anxiety. Electrocardiographic anxiety profiles improve speech anxiety.

The present study was to set out in efforts to determine the effect of electrocardiographic (ECG) feedback on the performance in speech anxiety. Forty-six high school students participated in a speech performance educational program. They were randomly divided into two groups, an experimental group with ECG feedback (N = 21) and a control group (N = 25). Feedback was given with video recording in the control, whereas in the experimental group, an additional ECG feedback was provided. Speech performance was evaluated by the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) speech ability test, which determines

Sex moderates the relationship between worry and performance monitoring brain activity in undergraduates.

Research suggests that abnormal performance-monitoring contributes to the etiology and maintenance of anxious pathology. Moreover, the anxiety-performance monitoring relationship appears to be specific to the worry dimension of anxiety. Given that anxiety (and worry in particular) is twice as prevalent in women as men, and most studies to date have employed small samples which are underpowered to detect sex-differences, it is possible that sex may be an important moderator of the worry-performance-monitoring relationship. No studies have directly compared the worry-performance-monitoring relat

Childhood anxiety sensitivity, fear downregulation, and anxious behaviors: Vagal suppression as a moderator of risk.

Anxiety sensitivity-the fear that anxiety-related sensations will result in catastrophic physical, social, or psychological consequences-is a robust risk factor for clinical anxiety. However, less is known about how anxiety sensitivity may interact with physiological modulation of arousal to predict anxious children's fear responses. The present investigation examined vagal withdrawal as a moderator of the association between anxiety sensitivity and anxious children's ability to downregulate subjective feelings of fear in response to an anxiety-provoking speech task. Observer ratings of anxiou

Role of anxiety and brooding in specificity of autobiographical recall.

Overgeneral schemas and lack of autobiographical memory (AM) specificity about our past experiences can predict mood disturbance. Rumination, functional avoidance and executive processes are the main explanatory variables of such overgenerality. However, in non-clinical samples, rumination predicts overgenerality most consistently after the induction of dysphoric mood. Anxiety also activates rumination. Furthermore, anxiety predicts memory performance and has effects on mood which are independent of the effects of rumination. So, what might be the role of anxiety in autobiographical memory per

Psychological Violence and Mental Health Outcomes in NextGen Athletes: Moderating Role of Mental Performance Skills.

This study aimed to (a) identify NexGen athletes' levels of mental health, anxiety, and depressive symptoms; (b) determine associations between sport type, psychological violence, mental performance, and athletes' mental illness and mental health; and (c) assess whether mental performance moderates these associations. A total of 318 NextGen athletes completed an online survey. Results showed that 19.8% and 21.4% reported clinical anxiety and depressive symptoms, respectively, and 45.3% were flourishing. Participating in an aesthetic sport was significantly associated with lower mental health.

The impact of anxiety on prospective memory among children with nonverbal learning disabilities: a multinomial processing tree model.

This study investigated differences in prospective memory between children with nonverbal learning disabilities and typically developing children using a color matching task and a multinomial processing tree model. Additionally, it examines how trait anxiety and state anxiety influence the internal components of prospective memory in children with nonverbal learning disabilities. The results of this study were as follows. (1) Compared with typically developing children, children with nonverbal learning disabilities exhibited deficits in prospective memory; specifically, the multinomial process

Altered cortical thickness of the superior frontal gyrus and fusiform gyrus in individuals with subthreshold social anxiety.

Subthreshold social anxiety (SSA) is a condition in which individuals experience social anxiety that does not reach the threshold required for a clinical diagnosis of a social anxiety disorder (SAD). Although SSA may not impair lives as severely as SAD, it can affect social functioning. However, only a few studies focused on structural neural correlates of SSA. We recruited 65 individuals with SSA and used the Leibowitz Social Anxiety Scale to assess their social and performance anxiety levels and other relevant measures of social anxiety. Voxel-wise whole-brain correlational analyses showed a

A transdiagnostic examination of anxiety and stress on executive function outcomes in disorders with social impairment.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) difficulties characterise a number of psychiatric conditions and EF impairment may be a predisposing factor and/or consequence of anxiety and stress. The aim of the study was to examine EF factors in a mixed clinical cohort (Autism Spectrum Disorder and Social Anxiety Disorder) characterised by social impairment and investigate the influence of trait anxiety and state-based depression, anxiety and stress. METHODS: In Study 1, a factor analysis identified EF and non-EF latent factor structures (N=205). In Study 2, (N=137) multiple regression analyses investi

Perceptions and Prevalence of Anxiolytic Medication Usage for Performance Enhancement Among Musicians.

OBJECTIVE: While anecdotal reports of the use of performance-enhancing medications to curb anxiety in performing artists abound, there has been no research to date assessing the prevalence of usage and attitudes towards use amongst the artists themselves. The objective of this study was to evaluate the perceptions, acquisition, and use of potentially performance-enhancing medications (benzodiazepines, beta-blockers, and cannabinoids) in the performing artist community to clarify the use of these medications to improve patient counseling and patient safety. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SET

Creative Commons 4.0 Exploring the complex interplay between anxiety, aging, and behavior in CB6F1 and C57BL/6 mice: implications for cognitive function.

Anxiety is a pervasive emotional response that can profoundly impact well-being and cognitive function in both humans and animals. The relationship between anxiety and aging remains complex and multifaceted. To explore this relationship in more detail, an open-field photobeam system was used to quantify anxiety-related behaviors in aging CB6F1 and C57BL/6 male mice and to determine associations with aging phenotypes, including short- and long-term memory, grip strength, rotarod performance, and self-motivated wheel running. Results indicated a heightened anxiety in novel environments with incr

Latent growth curve analysis of fear during a speech task before and after treatment for social phobia.

Models of social phobia highlight the importance of anticipatory anxiety in the experience of fear during a social situation. Anticipatory anxiety has been shown to be highly correlated with performance anxiety for a variety of social situations. A few studies show that average ratings of anxiety during the anticipation and performance phases of a social situation decline following treatment. Evidence also suggests that the point of confrontation with the feared stimulus is the peak level of fear. No study to date has evaluated the pattern of anxious responding across the anticipation, confron

Effects of amount of helplessness training and internal-external locus of control on mood and performance.

Based on Wortman and Brehm's integration of reactance theory with Seligman's model of learned helplessness, an investigation was conducted to examine the effects of amount of helplessness training and internal--external locus of control on subsequent task performance and on self-ratings of mood. Subjects were divided into "internal" and "external" groups and were then given either high, low, or no helplessness training on a series of concept-formation problems. After completing a mood checklist, all subjects worked on an anagram task presented as a second experiment by a second experimenter. T

Modelling relationships between cognitive variables during and following public speaking in participants with social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia predict that several cognitive processes will mediate the relationship between trait levels of social anxiety and the extent of anxiety experienced in a specific social-evaluative situation. The current study aimed to provide a test of these relationships. Over 200 clinical participants with social phobia completed measures of their general social anxiety and a week later performed a brief impromptu speech. They completed a measure of state anxiety in response to the speech as well as questionnaires assessing several cognitive constructs including focus of per
