Segmentally homologous neurogenesis and neuronal differentiation processes characterize the formation of the peripheral nervous system in the developing mouthparts of the grasshopper embryo. The peripherally located neurons derive from the ectoderm in each of the embryonic mouthparts. The major nerve branches serving the mandibles, maxillae, and labium are established by peripheral pioneer neurons, which project their axons into the central nervous system via a set of guidepost cells. The two secondary nerve branches in each appendage are established by fasciculation of peripheral afferent pio

The relationship of peripheral nerves with fibronectin was examined at different stages of the chick embryo using double immunofluorescent staining. Neurons were stained with a monoclonal antibody (E/C8) against intermediate filaments in neuronal processes, and fibronectin was stained with polyclonal antibodies. Prior to axonal outgrowth, fibronectin was distributed in a meshwork throughout the mesenchyme. However, soon after the initiation of axonal outgrowth, fibronectin began to disappear along neuronal pathways. Thus, during the period of active axonal growth, all neural tissues were marke

The immune-mediated disorders of the central and peripheral nervous systems all involve humoral mechanisms in which immunoglobulin, complement and/or other mediators are implicated. The disorders can be characterized by pattern of disease activity, site of immunoglobulin synthesis, humoral mechanism of injury, and presence of one or more concurrent cellular mechanisms of injury. Control of the humoral responses is presumably T-cell dependent. While these disorders should be viewed as having both humoral and cellular components, the specific components of each disorder might predict the respons

The clinical picture and course of diseases affecting the lumbosacral division of the peripheral nervous system in 111 children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years are described. It was found that in 40.5% of the patients the diseases developed in the presence of congenital anomalies in the development of the lumbosacral part of the vertebral column. Unlike adults, the pain syndrome in children and adolescents is less pronounced, and leading in the clinical picture are signs of reflectory-tonic protection of the vertebral column.

What regulates the activity of the central nervous renin-angiotensin system is not known. To define whether control of this central system is linked to that in the periphery, simultaneous blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples for measurement of immunoreactive angiotensin II were drawn from anesthetized dogs during hemorrhage, furosemide-induced volume depletion, insulin-hypoglycemia, beta-adrenergic blockade and saline infusion. Despite vigorous increments or decrements in plasma innunoreactive angiotensin II, CSF levels remained stable. Since immunoreactive angiotensin II in dog CSF is

Valid, responsive blood biomarkers specific to peripheral nerve damage would improve management of peripheral nervous system (PNS) diseases. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is sensitive for detecting axonal pathology but is not specific to PNS damage, as it is expressed throughout the PNS and CNS. Peripherin, another intermediate filament protein, is almost exclusively expressed in peripheral nerve axons. We postulated that peripherin would be a promising blood biomarker of PNS axonal damage. We demonstrated that peripherin is distributed in sciatic nerve, and to a lesser extent spinal cord ti

Neurofibromatosis type I (NF1), neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), and schwannomatosis represent a diverse group of genetic tumor predisposition syndromes with a shared feature of tumors affecting the peripheral nerve sheaths. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Many advancements have been made in understanding the biologic underpinnings of these conditions, and in 2016 the first drug was approved by the FDA to treat pediatric symptomatic unresectable plexiform neurofibromas. RECENT FINDINGS: Mek inhibitors have provided a much-needed therapeutic avenue for NF1 patients with unresectable plexiform neurofibromas (

Neurotrophins are a family of proteins that play an important role in the regulation of the growth, survival, and differentiation of neurons in the central and peripheral nervous system. Neurotrophins were earlier characterized by their role in early development, growth, maintenance, and the plasticity of the nervous system during development, but recent findings also indicate their complex role during normal physiology in both neuronal and non-neuronal tissues. Therefore, it is important to recognize a deficiency in the expression of neurotrophins, a major factor driving the debilitating feat

The expression and function of aquaporins (AQPs) in the peripheral nervous system is a relatively under-investigated subject. Since the original description of AQP1 mRNA expression in the trigeminal ganglion in 2004, there has been significant progress in describing the expression, regulation and function of AQPs in the peripheral nervous system. Three out of the 13 mammalian AQPs (AQP1, AQP2 and AQP4) have been localized to neurons or glial cells in trigeminal ganglia, periodontal Ruffini endings, dorsal root ganglia and the enteric nervous system. Functional studies using knockout mice have

INTRODUCTION: A significant group of neuromuscular diseases are of autoimmune origin, but the classic immunomodulatory drugs are not often effective. For this reason, there is a need to find new more effective treatments that will lead to better control of these conditions, particularly those that are usually more resistant. In the last few years, the use of monoclonal antibodies against specific antigens of lymphocyte populations or against pro-inflammatory molecules has seen a great expansion, and has been demonstrated to be a useful alternative in autoimmune diseases. An intensive search wa

We have described a new population of adult neural stem cells residing in the carotid body, a chemoreceptor organ in the peripheral nervous system. These progenitor cells support neurogenesis in vivo in response to physiological stimuli like hypoxemia, and give rise to multipotent neurospheres in culture. Studying the biology of CB stem cells helps to understand the physiological adaptations of the organ, and might shed light on the pathogenesis of CB tumors. Understanding proliferation and differentiation of these cells will enable their use for cell therapy against neurodegenerative diseases

High-resolution sonography is capable of depicting peripheral nerves and the brachial plexus. In this study we review the literature on this subject. Normal peripheral nerves have a characteristic echotexture. Most nerves are readily visualized, although this is not always the case with the nerves of the lower extremity. The main pathological changes that can be demonstrated are nerve enlargement and increased hypoechogenicity. In order to demonstrate nerve enlargement, measurements should be performed and compared with a set of reference values. Several neuropathies have been studied by means

Two hundreds and sixty-seven patients with gunshot injuries of 394 nerves and plexus underwent clinical and electromyographic investigation and H-reflex evaluation as well. Based on the results of the data obtained, 3 types of nerves trunk injuries: neuroapraxia, axonothmesis and neurothmesis, were identified. The reduction of biopotential amplitude and synergic muscular activity, decrease of impulse conduction velocities (ICVeff--up to 30%), M-response amplitude (up to 50% and more) and motor units functioning were characteristic of neuroapraxia of nerve trunks. Axonothmesis of nerve trunks f

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate peripheral nervous system involvement in gyrate atrophy of the choroid and retina with hyperornithinemia (GA).
BACKGROUND: GA is an inborn error of amino acid metabolism caused by mutations in the enzyme ornithine aminotransferase. Patients with GA have hyperornithinemia, progressive centripetal loss of vision, minor CNS abnormalities, and type II muscle fiber atrophy with accumulation of tubular aggregates. The authors previously showed that muscle and brain creatine stores are depleted in the patients with GA.
METHODS: The authors searched evidence of peripheral nerv

In the normal urinary bladder, tachykinins (TKs) are expressed in a population of bladder nociceptors that is sensitive to the excitatory and desensitizing effects of capsaicin (i.e., capsaicin-sensitive primary afferent neurons (CSPANs)). Several endobiotics or xenobiotics excite CSPANs and release TKs and other mediators at both the peripheral and spinal cord level. The peripheral release of TKs determines a set of responses (known as neurogenic inflammation) that includes vasodilatation, plasma protein extravasation, smooth muscle contraction and stimulation of afferent nerves. Apart from the unique changes characteristic of "HIV encephalitis", the productive infection of central nervous system by HIV, which predominantly involves the white matter and basal ganglia, evidence is accumulating that the cerebral cortex may also be affected in AIDS patients. Neuronal loss, suspected at microscopic examination, has been demonstrated by a number of morphometric studies. However, the cause and mechanism of neuronal damage in HIV infection, are still unclear. In an attempt to look for an apoptotic process at the origin of neuronal loss in AIDS, we examined samples of frontal

In previous studies, ultrasonography was a very sensitive method in detecting fasciculations. The present study was intended to examine the prevalence of ultrasonographically visible fasciculations in patients with neuromuscular diseases affecting the lower extremities. Ultrasonography of 9 muscles (rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, vastus intermedius, vastus medialis, sartorius, semitendinosus, tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, and soleus muscles) was performed bilaterally in 70 adult healthy subjects and 172 patients with various neuromuscular diseases. Fasciculations were detected in 109 (6

Seventy-one urinary total hydroxyproline determinations were carried out by the Prockop-Udenfried method in 61 patients with central nervous system damage (Bell's palsy, pareses of small muscles or muscle groups caused by damage to peripheral nerves or nerve roots, brachial plexus injury and motor polyneuropathy) and in 45 controls. Significantly raised urinary hydroxyproline excretion was found in cases of brachial plexus injury and severe motor polyneuropathy. This excretion in subgroups of Bell's palsy and damage to single nerves or roots was not significantly different from that in control
