Health assessment of wild lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) populations in the Atlantic Forest and Pantanal biomes, Brazil (1996-2012).

Abstract The lowland tapir (Tapirus terrestris) is found in South America and is listed as Vulnerable to Extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, Red List of Threatened Species. Health issues, particularly infectious diseases, are potential threats for the species. Health information from 65 wild tapirs from two Brazilian biomes, Atlantic Forest (AF) and Pantanal (PA), were collected during a long-term study (1996-2012). The study included physic, hematologic and biochemical evaluations, microbiologic cultures, urinalysis, and serologic analyses for antibodies against

A review of the reproductive biology and breeding management of tapirs.

Tapirs (Tapirus sp.) have been studied extensively in the wild, yet little is known about their fundamental reproductive biology, information that is critical to establishing self-sustaining populations in captivity as a hedge against extinction. This paper reviews information on the reproductive biology of the 4 species of tapirs: Baird's (Tapirus bairdii), lowland (T terrestris), mountain (T pinchaque) and Malayan (T indicus). Both sexes reach puberty between 14 and 48 months of age. Behaviorally, tapirs display few overt signs of estrus, and external signs of pregnancy are not evident until

Assisted reproduction in female rhinoceros and elephants--current status and future perspective.

Over the last few decades, rhinoceroses and elephants became important icons in the saga of wildlife conservation. Recent surveys estimate the wild Asian (Elephas maximus) and African (Loxodonta africana) elephant populations to be, at most, 50 250 and 637 600 respectively. For the five rhinoceros species, black (Diceros bicornis), white (Ceratotherium simum), Indian (Rhinoceros unicornis), Javan (Rhinoceros sondaicus) and Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus Sumatrensis), the population estimates of 3610, 11 330, 2400, 60 and 300, respectively, are of even greater concern. Comparative genomics of Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis strains within a group of captive lowland tapirs.

Within a group of three captive lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris) suffering from clinically apparent mycobacteriosis, non-tuberculous Mycobacterium avium subsp. hominissuis (MAH) strains were isolated from the animals and the tapir's enclosure. Based on MIRU-VNTR findings, which identified two closely related INMV profiles (124 and 246), a micro-evolutionary event was assumed, and four available MAH strains were submitted to whole genome sequencing (short- and long-read technologies). Surprisingly, the differences based on single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were exceptionally high betwee

Butorphanol with oxygen insufflation corrects etorphine-induced hypoxaemia in chemically immobilized white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).

BACKGROUND: Opioid-induced immobilization is associated with severe respiratory depression in the white rhinoceros. We evaluated the efficacy of butorphanol and oxygen insufflation in alleviating opioid-induced respiratory depression in eight boma-managed rhinoceros. RESULTS: Chemical immobilization with etorphine, azaperone and hyaluronidase, as per standard procedure for the white rhinoceros, caused severe respiratory depression with hypoxaemia (PaO2 = 27 ± 7 mmHg [mean ± SD]), hypercapnia (PaCO2 = 82 ± 6 mmHg) and acidosis (pH =7.26 ± 0.02) in the control trial at 5 min. Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis cultured from the feces of a Southern black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis minor) with diarrhea and weight loss.

Abstract: Mycobacterium avium paratuberculosis (Map) was cultured from the feces of a wild-caught, female, adult Southern black rhinoceros. The animal, which presented with a 4-mo history of diarrhea and weight loss, was prescribed a course of antimycobacterial drugs. The clinical signs resolved, and the feces were repeatedly culture negative thereafter. Although the Rhinocerotidae are likely to be resistant to Johne's disease, this case raises the possibility that they can become transiently infected with the causative organism.

Identification of alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (orosomucoid) as a major vanilloid binding protein in serum.

We have used the vanilloid (capsaicin) receptor assay to search for modulators of binding activity. We report here that both capsaicin and its ultrapotent analog, resiniferatoxin (RTX), bind to the plasma protein alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) with high affinity (10.5 and 0.3 microM, respectively). AGP seems to be the dominant vanilloid (capsaicin/RTX) binding protein in serum. [3H] RTX binding to AGP is inhibited by chlorpromazine and by Trisbutoxyethylphosphate, indicating that vanilloids compete for a well-characterized drug binding domain on the AGP molecule. The 35-fold difference in the

De-extinction of the Northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni).

The last survivors of the northern white rhinoceros (NWR, Ceratotherium simum cottoni), once widespread across Central and East Africa, are two non-reproductive females under continuous human protection. In order to prevent the extinction of this white rhinoceros subspecies, the BioRescue consortium founded in 2019 has developed an innovative reproductive biotechnology program. This holistic rescue strategy implements (i) advanced assisted reproductive technologies (aART) including in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer, (ii) stem cell associated techniques (SCAT) for establishing in

Paleogenomics and habitat modeling reveal temperate Eurasian origins of woolly rhinoceroses.

The woolly rhinoceros was a prominent Ice Age megafaunal species, and there is limited knowledge regarding its origin and responses to past glacial cycles. We sequenced 29 mitochondrial and 14 nuclear genomes from Pleistocene specimens across Eurasia and modeled the species' habitats over the past 500,000 years. Our results suggest that its maternal genetic diversity mainly evolved in temperate Eurasia around 460 thousand to 420 thousand years ago during a prolonged glacial-interglacial transition. We found that a ~170-thousand-year-old East Asian individual was ancestral to all later populati

Vesiculobullous skin reaction temporally related to firocoxib treatment in a white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum).

A 40 yr-old female white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) suffered from chronic nail-bed abscesses. Due to worsening of clinical signs, the animal's nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory treatment was switched to firocoxib. Approximately 7 days after this change, the animal developed multifocal vesicles and bullae along the lateral aspects of the thorax and abdomen, the dorsum, and the proximal limbs. Cytology and culture did not identify an infectious etiology. Histologically, the lesions consisted of a severe, subacute vesiculobullous dermatitis with intraepidermal to subepidermal clefting with are

Phlebotomine sandfly (Diptera: Psychodidae) fauna survey in an American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) focus in Baturité, Ceará State, northeast Brazil.

From October until July 1991, CDC miniature light traps were set up and man and animal-landing and biting catches were made in 100 different catching zones, in different habitats, throughout the ACL focus of the Serra de Baturité. Female Lutzomyia whitmani and Lu. wellcomei appeared to be highly anthropophilic and were the most prevalent species in man-landing catches in peridomestic sites. Most Lu. migonei were attracted to animals, especially mules. Seasonal fluctuations and habitat preference were noted for the principal populations present.

Gastrointestinal Parasites in Captive Animals at the Rio de Janeiro Zoo.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites may determine diarrhea, dysentery or even death in captive mammals. These animals tend to be more susceptible to parasitic infections due to confinement and stress. Purpose To increase the information about these etiological agents in captive animals in Brazil, the gastrointestinal parasites of the captive mammals of the Rio de Janeiro Zoo were investigated. METHODS: From 2016 to 2018, 180 fecal samples were collected from animals housed in the Rio de Janeiro Zoo: 63 from animals of the order Primates, 26 of Carnivora, 78 of Artiodactyla, 9 of Perissodac

Phylogenetics, patterns of genetic variation and population dynamics of Trypanosoma terrestris support both coevolution and ecological host-fitting as processes driving trypanosome evolution.

BACKGROUND: A considerable amount of evidence has favored ecological host-fitting, rather than coevolution, as the main mechanism responsible for trypanosome divergence. Nevertheless, beyond the study of human pathogenic trypanosomes, the genetic basis of host specificity among trypanosomes isolated from forest-inhabiting hosts remains largely unknown. METHODS: To test possible scenarios on ecological host-fitting and coevolution, we combined a host capture recapture strategy with parasite genetic data and studied the genetic variation, population dynamics and phylogenetic relationships of Tr

Morphological Evaluation of the Hip Joint and Pelvic Limb Bones of the Lowland Tapir (Tapirus terrestris Linnaeus, 1758) Using Radiography and Computed Tomography.

The study aimed to characterize, through imaging examinations-including radiographs and computed tomography-the hip joint and the bones of the thigh, leg and feet in Lowland tapirs (Tapirus terrestris). Ten pelvic limbs were collected, two from juveniles and the remaining from adults. The femoral head exhibited a rounded morphology with a well-defined fovea capitis and a short, thick neck. Three trochanters were identified, with the greater and third trochanters being particularly prominent. The femoral diaphysis was elongated and straight, and the distal end displayed a globular medial condyl
