Aerostability of Sin Nombre Virus Aerosol Related to Near-Field Transmission.

Sin Nombre virus (SNV) is the main causative agent of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in North America. SNV is transmitted via environmental biological aerosols (bioaerosols) produced by infected deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus). It is similar to other viruses that have environmental transmission routes rather than a person-to-person transmission route, such as avian influenza (e.g., H5N1) and Lassa fever. Despite the lack of person-to-person transmission, these viruses cause a significant public health and economic burden. However, due to the lack of targeted pharmaceutical preve

Maximizing and sustaining the efficacy of tick tubes for management of Ixodes scapularis through optimized deployment strategies.

The number of tick-borne disease cases continues to rise in the United States, with Lyme disease the most frequently reported vector-borne disease nationally. Practical and effective tick control tools and strategies are needed to reduce tick encounters and tick-borne disease risk. Tick management tubes have shown varying efficacy when used as part of a tick management plan. To evaluate factors contributing to the efficacy of tick management tubes, this study assessed changes in tick tube deployment on tick burden on wild-caught Peromyscus mice, a primary reservoir for the bacterium causing Ly

The Role of the Cerebellum in Repetitive Behavior Across Species: Childhood Stereotypies and Deer Mice.

Recent studies suggest that the cerebellum may have a significant role in repetitive behaviors. In primary complex motor stereotypies, typically developing children have repetitive movements usually involving rhythmic flapping/waving arm/hand movements. Similarly, the deer mouse animal model exhibits inherited repetitive behaviors, with increased frequencies of spontaneous jumping and rearing. In this study, data from both children with motor stereotypies and deer mice were used to investigate the role of the cerebellum in repetitive behaviors. The 3.0-T MRI volumetric imaging of the cerebellu

Babesiosis in Long Island. Host-parasite relationships of rodent- and human-derived Babesia microti isolates in hamsters.

The effects of splenectomy and size of inoculum on response of hamsters to three isolates of Babesia microti (two rodent- and one human-derived) from Long Island were studied. Splenectomy of hamsters did not enhance susceptibility to the rodent isolates of B. microti at a dosage of 5 X 10(7) parasites. Larger parasite inocula produced shorter prepatent periods and slightly shorter duration of infection in intact hamsters. Inoculum size was not contributory to mortality of hamsters or to pathogenesis. Hamsters showed profound anemia with depressed hematocrit and hemoglobin values and erythrocyt

Reservoir hosts of human babesiosis on Nantucket Island.

The host range of Babesia microti was studied on Nantucket Island in order to identify the enzootic reservoir of this human pathogen. White-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were more frequently parasitized than were other indigenous animals. Infection was ubiquitous in locations where deer were abundant. Mice were most frequently parasitemic during spring and summer and adults more frequently than juveniles. Parasitemia, which was rarely intense, was sustained for as long as 4 months. Mice lived as long as 10 months, and juveniles were most abundant during early summer. Prevalence of zoonotic

Retention of Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana in naturally infected rodents from the State of Campeche, Mexico.

In the State of Campeche, Mexico, zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis is mainly due to Leishmania (L.) mexicana. The parasite population is maintained in a mammalian species, a reservoir in which the ideal course of infection should be long and relatively nonpathogenic. The objective of the present study was to document the retention of L. (L.) mexicana in 29 naturally infected rodents. These cricetids lived in captivity for up to two years and were tested monthly for the presence of the parasite, by cultures of needle aspirates from the base of the tail. Peromyscus yucatanicus and Ototylomys phy

Surveillance for Borrelia burgdorferi in Ixodes Ticks and Small Rodents in British Columbia.

To determine the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi in British Columbian ticks, fieldwork was conducted over a 2-year period. In all, 893 ticks (Ixodes pacificus, I. angustus, I. soricis, Ixodes spp., and Dermacentor andersoni) of different life stages were retrieved from 483 small rodents (Peromyscus maniculatus, Perognathus parvus, and Reithrodontomys megalotis). B. burgdorferi DNA was detected in 5 out of 359 tick pools, and 41 out of 483 mice were serologically confirmed to have antibodies against B. burgdorferi. These results were consistent with previous studies, data from passive survei

Isolation of Bartonella spp. from embryos and neonates of naturally infected rodents.

Embryos and neonatal offspring of wild-captured cotton rats (Sigmodon hispidus) and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were tested for the presence of Bartonella spp. Isolates of Bartonella spp. were obtained from 18 of 31 embryos and 7 of 19 neonates from bacteremic dams of the two species; no isolates were obtained from material from non-bacteremic dams. Sequence analysis demonstrated that the isolates from embryos and neonates matched the phylogenetic group of Bartonella spp. isolates obtained from the mother. No antibodies to homologous Bartonella spp. antigens were detected in matern

Zoonotic implications of white-footed mice habitat selection and territoriality in fragmented landscapes.

White-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) populations can thrive in fragmented suburban and urban parks and residential spaces and play a pivotal role in the spread and prevalence of tick-borne diseases. We collected spatial data on 58 individual mice living at the intersection of county park land and residential land in suburban Howard County, MD, U.S.A. We analyzed mouse density, home-range size and overlap, and a Bayesian mixed-effects model to identify the habitats where they were found relative to where they were caught, as well as a resource selection function for general habitat use. We

Repetitive motor behavior: further characterization of development and temporal dynamics.

Repetitive behaviors are diagnostic for autism spectrum disorders, common in related neurodevelopmental disorders, and normative in typical development. In order to identify factors that mediate repetitive behavior development, it is necessary to characterize the expression of these behaviors from an early age. Extending previous findings, we characterized further the ontogeny of stereotyped motor behavior both in terms of frequency and temporal organization in deer mice. A three group trajectory model provided a good fit to the frequencies of stereotyped behavior across eight developmental ti

Borrelia burgdorferi promotes the establishment of Babesia microti in the northeastern United States.

Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi, the respective causative agents of human babesiosis and Lyme disease, are maintained in their enzootic cycles by the blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) and use the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) as primary reservoir host. The geographic range of both pathogens has expanded in the United States, but the spread of babesiosis has lagged behind that of Lyme disease. Several studies have estimated the basic reproduction number (R0) for B. microti to be below the threshold for persistence (<1), a finding that is inconsistent with the persistence

Failure of cryptorchidism to suppress fertility in a tropical rodent.

The cane mouse (Zygodontomys brevicauda) breeds year-round on the hot llanos of Venezuela, only 8 degrees above the equator. The reproductive responses of the males of this species to heat were compared with those of a temperature zone rodent, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus). When tested at different ambient temperatures, the movement of the testis in relation to the scrotum was similar in the two species, but the cane mouse's testis proved to be much more resistant to maintenance at core body temperature. In two experiments, cryptorchid cane mice experienced only a 24% and a 5% d

Down-regulation of muscarinic receptors and the m3 subtype in white-footed mice by dietary exposure to parathion.

The effect of ad libitum dietary exposure (as occurs in the field) to parathion for 14 d was investigated on the muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) in brains and submaxillary glands of adults of a field species, the white-footed mouse Peromyscus leucopus. Immunoprecipitation using subtype selective antibodies revealed that the relative ratios of the m1-m5 mAChR subtypes in Peromyscus brain were similar to those in rat brain. There was little variability in acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in control mice brains but large variability in 39 exposed mice, resulting from differences in

Five new Mexican species of the flea genus Strepsylla Traub, 1950 (Siphonaptera: Ctenophthalmidae: Neopsyllinae: Phalacropsyllini) with a phylogenetic analysis.

The genus Strepsylla Traub is redescribed and compared with the other genera of the tribe Phalacropsyllini. Thirteen recognized species are distributed in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Panama, where they parasitize small rodents, especially mice of the genus Peromyscus. Five new species are reported and described (Strepsylla ixtlanensis n. sp., Strepsylla longicauda n. sp., Strepsylla queretana n. sp., Strepsylla tezontli n. sp., and Strepsylla vargasi n. sp.). Keys for the genera of the tribe and for the species of Strepsylla are included, and relevant notes for each species ar

Striatal adenosine A2A receptor involvement in normal and large nest building deer mice: Perspectives on compulsivity and anxiety.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by recurring obsessive thoughts and repetitive behaviors that are often associated with anxiety and perturbations in cortico-striatal signaling. Given the suboptimal response of OCD to current serotonergic interventions, there is a need to better understand the psychobiological mechanisms that may underlie the disorder. In this regard, investigations into adenosinergic processes might be fruitful. Indeed, adenosine modulates both anxiety- and motor behavioral output. Thus, we aimed to explore the potential associations between compulsive-lik

Reservoir competence of white-footed mice for Babesia microti.

Although the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus Rafinesque, has been incriminated as the main reservoir of the agent of human babesiosis, Babesia microti Franca, a quantitative demonstration of reservoir competence has not been presented. Mice captured within an intensely zoonotic site served as host for laboratory-reared larval Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman, and Corwin, and the resulting nymphal ticks were assayed for evidence of salivary gland infection by the piroplasm. Solely 25% of the mice were patently parasitemic on thin blood smears, but virtually all mice infected t

Host genetics as a cause of overdispersion of parasites among hosts: how general a phenomenon?

In the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, the tapeworm Hymenolepis citelli occurs at low (2-3%) prevalence in the field. We found that mature infections (i.e., with egg production) developed in up to 100% of hosts. In the laboratory, a majority of hosts lost their infection by 28 days postintubation. In wild mice infected in the laboratory and returned to the field, infections were more prolonged, with half of the mice still infected at 100 days postintubation. A majority of previously infected hosts resisted challenge infection. Our introduction of laboratory-infected mice into a natura

Emerging Tick-Borne Pathogens in Central Canada: Recent Detections of Babesia odocoilei and Rickettsia rickettsii.

Background: The spread of emerging tick-borne pathogens has steadily increased in Canada with the widespread establishment of tick vectors and vertebrate hosts. At present, Borrelia burgdorferi, the bacterium causing Lyme disease, is the most common tick-borne pathogen in Canada and primarily transmitted by Ixodes scapularis. A low prevalence of other emerging tick-borne pathogens, such as Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia species, Borrelia miyamotoi, and Francisella tularensis have also been detected through surveillance efforts in Canada. Although Rickettsia rickettsii has been historically
