Nonmetallic modified zero-valent iron for remediating halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals: A comprehensive review.

Zero Valent Iron (ZVI), an ideal reductant treating persistent pollutants, is hampered by issues like corrosion, passivation, and suboptimal utilization. Recent advancements in nonmetallic modified ZVI (NM-ZVI) show promising potential in circumventing these challenges by modifying ZVI's surface and internal physicochemical properties. Despite its promise, a thorough synthesis of research advancements in this domain remains elusive. Here we review the innovative methodologies, regulatory principles, and reduction-centric mechanisms underpinning NM-ZVI's effectiveness against two prevalent pers

Impact of Environmental Exposure on Infant Sleep : The Exposome Approach.

Sleep is fundamental for infant development and health, playing a critical role in cognitive, socio-emotional, and physical growth. However, environmental factors can impact the quality and duration of sleep in infants. This review synthesises current evidence on the associations between environmental chemical exposures and infant sleep outcomes, with a focus on the first 1000 days of life. Infants may be exposed to environmental pollutants before birth, through the placenta, or after birth, via breastfeeding, diet, and external sources such as inhalation, dust contact, or hand-to-mouth exposu

Synthesis and catalytic utilization of bimetallic systems for wastewater remediation: A review.

The environment is affected by agricultural, domestic, and industrial activities that lead to drastic problems such as global warming and wastewater generation. Wastewater pollution is of public concern, making the treatment of persistent pollutants in water and wastewater highly imperative. Several conventional treatment technologies (physicochemical processes, biological degradation, and oxidative processes) have been applied to water and wastewater remediation, but each has numerous limitations. To address this issue, treatment using bimetallic systems has been extensively studied. This stu

An exploratory study of environmental and nutritional determinants of early-stage clonal hematopoiesis in the elderly.

Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), defined by somatic mutations in hematopoietic cells without overt malignancy, is linked to increased risks of hematologic malignancies, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. However, the contribution of environmental exposures and lifestyle factors remains poorly understood. Our exploratory study characterized early-stage CHIP using a variant allele frequency cut-off > 0.1% in 888 well-phenotyped 70-year-olds leveraging ultra-deep targeted sequencing (mean coverage 8331X). Associations with dietary patterns, specific nutrient intakes, pe

Microplastics in aquatic systems: A comprehensive review of its distribution, environmental interactions, and health risks.

Microplastics (MPs) have become a critical pollutant, accumulating in aquatic ecosystems and posing significant environmental and human health risks. Approximately 5.25 trillion plastic particles float in global oceans, releasing up to 23,600 metric tonnes of dissolved organic carbon annually, which disrupts microbial dynamics. MPs arise from the breakdown of larger plastics, degraded by photodegradation, thermal degradation, and biological processes, which are influenced by polymer type and environmental factors. As carriers, MPs absorb and transport contaminants such as heavy metals, per- an

Hepatic fatty acid fingerprints as biomarkers of persistent pollutant exposure in the ubiquitous blue shark (Prionace glauca).

Sharks exhibit remarkable species diversity, with most functioning as apex predators, making them particularly vulnerable to bioaccumulation of persistent pollutants (PPs). The ubiquitous blue shark (Prionace glauca) in particular, shows a strong capacity to accumulate contaminants that persist in marine ecosystems. Considering the biological relevance of fatty acids (FAs) and their potential interaction with pollutants, this study aimed to characterize hepatic FAs in 43 juvenile specimens and correlate them with two major PP classes to better understand their interactions and effects. An inte

Environmental-dose chlorpyrifos disrupts gut microbiota and microbial metabolite profiles: An indirect mechanism promoting breast tumor growth.

Chlorpyrifos (CPF), a persistent organic pollutant prevalent in the environment, has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer through mechanisms that remain incompletely elucidated. Since microorganisms are more susceptible to CPF than animals, this study employed a 24-week exposure mouse model to investigate the impacts of environmental-dose CPF (2 and 20 μg/kg) on gut microbiota (GM), microbial metabolites, and breast tumor growth. Our findings revealed that chronic CPF exposure reduced bacterial α diversity with a significant proliferation of Clostridium and Alloprevotella wi

Atmospheric Deposition of Organic Pollutants: A Comprehensive Review of Sampling and Analytical Methodologies.

Atmospheric deposition of organic pollutants plays a crucial role in the transport and fate of contaminants in the environment, with implications for ecosystem health and human exposure. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and microplastics are increasingly recognized as transboundary threats due to their long-range atmospheric transport and accumulation. Despite international regulatory efforts, such as the Stockholm Convention and the EU's new air quality directives, data on deposition fluxes remain sparse and highly variable due to methodological in

Sulfate-reducing bacteria in removal of pollutants: a promising candidate for bioremediation.

Industrial processes contribute significantly to environmental pollution, particularly by releasing sulfate-rich wastewater containing toxic metals and organic pollutants. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), being anaerobic microorganisms, are capable of reducing sulfate to sulfide, which precipitates harmful heavy metals and facilitates bioremediation. This review explores the potential of SRB in industrial wastewater treatment, focusing on their roles in the bioremediation of sulfates, heavy metals, and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Laboratory-scale experiments demonstrated that SRB eff

Exposure to the aryl hydrocarbon receptor agonist dioxin disrupts formation of the muscle, nerves, and vasculature in the developing jaw.

Human exposure to environmental pollutants can disrupt embryonic development and impact juvenile and adult health outcomes by adversely affecting cell and organ function. Notwithstanding, environmental contamination continues to increase due to industrial development, insufficient regulations, and the mobilization of pollutants as a result of extreme weather events. Dioxins are a class of structurally related persistent organic pollutants that are highly toxic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic. 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is the most potent dioxin compound and has been shown to ind

From exposure to pathogenesis: A critical review of SCCPs-induced toxicity and potential molecular mechanisms.

Short-chained chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are a class of polychlorinated n-alkanes containing 10-13 carbon atoms, which are widely used in several industrial sectors due to their excellent thermal and chemical stability. However, their persistent residues, semi-volatility, and ubiquity in environmental media have raised global concerns. SCCPs are recognized as important environmental pollutants and are listed under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, ability to be transported over long distances, and biotoxicity. Metalloporphyrin solubility: a trigger for catalyzing reductive dechlorination of tetrachloroethylene.

Metalloporphyrins are well known for their electron-transfer roles in many natural redox systems. In addition, several metalloporphyrins and related tetrapyrrole macrocycles complexed with various core metals have been shown to catalyze the reductive dechlorination of certain organic compounds, thus demonstrating the potential for using naturally occurring metalloporphyrins to attenuate toxic and persistent chlorinated organic pollutants in the environment. However, despite the great interest in reductive dechlorination reactions and the wide variety of natural and synthetic porphyrins current

Environmental chemicals and type 2 diabetes: an updated systematic review of the epidemiologic evidence.

The burden of diabetes is increasing globally. Identifying novel preventable risk factors is an urgent need. In 2011, the U.S. National Toxicological Program (NTP) conducted a workshop to evaluate the epidemiologic and experimental evidence on the relationship of environmental chemicals with obesity, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Although the evidence was insufficient to establish causality, the NTP workshop review identified an overall positive association between some environmental chemicals and diabetes. In the present systematic review, our objective was to summarize the epidemiologica

Electron beam/persulfate-induced second-scale upcycling of wastewater polyvinyl alcohol with ultra-low chemical input.

Conventional mineralization of high-concentration organic pollutants relied on intensive chemicals and high carbon emissions, necessitating resource recovery strategies. We developed a high-energy electron beam (HEEB)-activated persulfate (PS) system, transforming 99 % of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA, 2 g/L) into recyclable precipitates with ultra-low PS dosage (0.1 g/L) and short irradiation duration (24 kGy, 38.4 s), along with 98 % chemical oxygen demand removal. Therein, radicals (SO4•- and •OH) were generated to induce PVA degraded into oligomers and repolymerized into particles, finally aggreg
