Medical-surgical management and clinical outcome in cervical abscesses.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims at defining through a retrospective evaluation, the clinical parameters affecting the clinical course and consequently the management of patients presenting with cervicofacial abscesses. METHODOLOGY: A total of 394 patients diagnosed with abscess at the University of Sassari Otorhinolaryngology Division between 2009 and 2017 were included; among these, eleven patients were diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis. Personal and clinical parameters including the LRINEC score and the medical and/or surgical treatment used were analyzed for each patient. The most frequen

Adaptive mechanisms of developing social connectedness in virtual reality environments.

Loneliness and social isolation, only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, are pressing societal challenges. Social Virtual Reality (SVR), as a form of social technology, can be seen as one of the alternatives for those unable to engage in traditional in-person interactions. This paper explores the dynamics of the development of social connectedness in SVR environments, highlighting the roles of embodiment, gestures, and non-verbal cues. The study reveals that the social connectedness in SVR unfolds through three formative phases and that the transition of social spaces from physical to virtu

Assessing life-space mobility : A systematic review of questionnaires and their psychometric properties.

BACKGROUND: Life-space mobility (LSM), as the extent of mobility within one's environment, is a key for successful aging and has become a relevant concept in gerontology and geriatric research. Adequate assessment instruments are needed to identify older persons with LSM restrictions, and to initiate, adapt or evaluate intervention strategies. OBJECTIVE: To systematically identify, describe and analyze the psychometric properties of LSM questionnaires, with a special focus on their availability in the German language. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO,

Building Therapeutic Alliances in Aphasia Rehabilitation: Developing Relational Competencies Through Narrative Practice.

OBJECTIVE: This study explored how graduate clinicians developed relational competencies while facilitating the My Story Project, an evidence-based narrative intervention in which clinicians support people with aphasia to co-construct personal life stories. METHODS: Using reflexive thematic analysis, focus group data from 11 graduate students in speech-language pathology who served as story coaches were analyzed. Each coach facilitated weekly virtual story co-construction sessions with one person with aphasia during a clinical practicum. Coaches received training in the relationship between n

Mass chemotherapy with diethylcarbamazine for the control of Bancroftian filariasis: a twelve-year follow-up in northern Trinidad, including observations on Mansonella ozzardi.

A microfilaria survey was conducted in Trinidad in 1992, 12 years after mass treatment with spaced doses of diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC-C) for the control of Bancroftian filariasis; 348 persons were examined using thick blood smears and a membrane filtration technique. They included 104 who had participated in the mass chemotherapy campaign in 1980. No Wuchereria bancrofti microfilariae were detected among 66% of the population examined. In 1980, 86 of 592 persons examined were found to be infected with W. bancrofti, 140 with Mansonella ozzardi and 44 with mixed infections, while in 1992,

Surrounding greenness and exposure to air pollution during pregnancy: an analysis of personal monitoring data.

BACKGROUND: Green spaces are reported to improve health status, including beneficial effects on pregnancy outcomes. Despite the suggestions of air pollution-related health benefits of green spaces, there is no available evidence on the impact of greenness on personal exposure to air pollution. OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between surrounding greenness and personal exposure to air pollution among pregnant women and to explore the potential mechanisms, if any, behind this association. METHODS: In total, 65 rounds of sampling were carried out for 54 pregnant women who resided in

Special report: controlling aggression in hospitals--what security officers must know to avoid physical attacks.

Threats to the safety of security officers by persons they encounter in confrontational or potentially confrontational situations are an ever-present danger. This potential for physical violence can take place in the lobby, cafeteria, halls, elevators, or the parking lot of any corporate entity, not just hospitals. In hospitals, however, this danger is compounded by psychiatric patients and other hospital patients under stress. Hospital security personnel are often called to defuse potentially violent patient situations. Further compounding this risk of violence are increases in cutbacks in ho

Barriers and Enablers for Physical Activity in Culturally Deaf Adults: A Qualitative Thematic Analysis.

Purpose: Physical activity (PA) is vital for everyone's health and wellbeing; however, there is, a paucity of research amongst culturally deaf adults. Especially, to understand the needs of deaf adults and how to get them involved in shaping interventions that would help deaf people to be physically active. The current study aimed to explore barriers and facilitators for engaging in PA amongst deaf adults. Method: Focus groups involving nine culturally deaf adults communicating using British sign language were conducted and analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Findings: Barriers includi

Computerized axial tomography for the diagnosis of cerebral cysticercosis.

Computerized Axial Tomography (CAT) has proved extremely useful for the diagnosis of cerebral cysticercosis. The calcified small, multiple, and scattered cysts provide a typical image on CAT. The collection of non-calcified cysts in the subarachnoid spaces (racemose form) or in the ventricles may produce areas of low density similar to that of the cerebrospinal fluid. The dilatation of the ventricular system, extreme degrees of hydrocephalus, areas of cerebral atrophy, and other related changes induced by the cysts in the subarachnoid spaces are also clearly shown in the CAT. Four personal cas

Movement of environmental threats modifies the relevance of the defensive eye-blink in a spatially-tuned manner.

Subcortical reflexive motor responses are under continuous cortical control to produce the most effective behaviour. For example, the excitability of brainstem circuitry subserving the defensive hand-blink reflex (HBR), a response elicited by intense somatosensory stimuli to the wrist, depends on a number of properties of the eliciting stimulus. These include face-hand proximity, which has allowed the description of an HBR response field around the face (commonly referred to as a defensive peripersonal space, DPPS), as well as stimulus movement and probability of stimulus occurrence. However,

Risk factors for joint replacement in knee osteoarthritis; a 15-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate whether clinical, radiographic or MRI findings are associated with long term risk for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in persons with knee osteoarthritis. METHODS: We performed a follow-up analysis of 100 persons with knee osteoarthritis who participated in a clinical trial between 2000 and 2002. Clinical data as well as radiography and MRI of the inclusion knee were obtained in all participants. Data on TKA procedures were extracted from The Danish National Patient Register. Clinical, radiographic and MRI findings were analyzed for associations with subsequent TKA. RES

Uptake of inhaled nitric oxide in acute lung injury.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread use of inhaled nitric oxide (NO), little is known of its pulmonary uptake in patients with acute respiratory failure. METHODS: Fourteen patients with acute lung injury (ALI) and ongoing NO therapy were studied. Three doses of NO (5, 10 and 40 ppm) were given for 20 min and at each dose level the following parameters were recorded: minute ventilation, inspiratory NO conc., mixed expired NO conc., end-tidal NO conc., mixed expired CO2 conc., end-tidal CO2 conc, and arterial CO2 tension. Total uptake was calculated and correlated to the total amount of NO inhal

Trichinella spiralis a new alien parasite in Italy and the increased risk of infection for domestic and wild swine.

In Europe, Trichinella spiralis, the most dangerous species for humans of the genus Trichinella, has a patchy distribution with important foci in Eastern countries and Spain. This zoonotic pathogen was apparently not circulating among wild and domestic animals of Italy. In 2016, muscle larvae belonging to this nematode species were detected in a red fox (Vulpes vulpes) shot in the Piacenza province (Northern Italy). This parasite may have been introduced into northern Italy from eastern Europe by hunters, by a hunting dog, or by immigrants, who illegally carried infected meat in their personal

How spaceflight challenges human cardiovascular health.

The harsh environmental conditions in space, particularly weightlessness and radiation exposure, can negatively affect cardiovascular function and structure. In the future, preventive cardiology will be crucial in enabling safe space travel. Indeed, future space missions destined to the Moon and from there to Mars will create new challenges to cardiovascular health while limiting medical management. Moreover, commercial spaceflight evolves rapidly such that older persons with cardiovascular risk factors will be exposed to space conditions. This review provides an overview on studies conducted

Socioeconomic Status and Life-Space Mobility in Old Age.

Life-space mobility describes the extent of community mobility of older persons. The aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and life-space mobility and to investigate whether associations might be explained by SES-related disparities in health and functioning. The participants (n = 848) were community-dwelling adults aged 75-90. Education and occupation were used to indicate SES. Life-space assessment (range 0-120) was used to indicate distance and frequency of moving and assistance needed in moving. People with low education had lo

What is Nature-Based Medicine and What Does It Do?

One's personal health and well-being can improve with activity in natural environments or decline without it. Many chronic illnesses to which personal nature deficiency contributes-including anxiety, depression, attention deficit, diabetes, hypertension, myopia, and obesity-have been exacerbated with the pandemic. That those illnesses may be preventable, treatable, and even reversible with an added nature-based approach may seem novel, but it is not. Though the field of nature-based medicine is just emerging in the U.S., it has been taught and practiced in Asia and the EU for decades. As the p

Characterization of asbestos exposures associated with the use of facial makeups.

There has been renewed interest in the safety of cosmetics that may contain asbestos or other elongate mineral particles at very low levels as a naturally occurring contaminant. The authors evaluated asbestos exposure during the application of facial makeups in a constructed chamber simulating a bathroom space. The facial makeups tested included products previously found to have very low or "trace" asbestos content by governmental and commercial laboratories using a variety of bulk analysis methods. Tremolite asbestos was detected in five of 54 personal air samples and three of 72 area air sam

At the Edge of Safety: Moral Experimentation in the Case of Family Therapy.

"At the Edge of Safety" argues for thinking of structural family therapy as a "moral laboratory." Borrowing a trope from Cheryl Mattingly's recent book Moral Laboratories, the article reconsiders a therapeutic style that was once controversial by analyzing personal stories of supervision-i.e. professional training-in light of Mattingly's suggestion that a social space in which people conduct experiments on themselves and their lives may be considered a moral laboratory. Family therapy is especially good to think with, because it is simultaneously a real and a metaphorical laboratory, physicall
