Dissatisfaction with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (2022) spurred attempts to reconceptualize personality disorders (PDs): But reconciling reconceptualizations is challenging. The Virtual Personality Model (VPM) may fill this gap, affording an integration of more static Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology and maladaptive trait models with a dynamic, interpersonal approach. VPM is implemented as a "runnable" computational model that treats personality as emergent from dynamic, structured motivational systems with person-specific parameter values (e.g., sensitivi

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This aim of the present systematic literature review is to critically analyze problematic sexuality and sexual dysfunctions in personality disorders (PDs) and pathological personality traits.
RECENT FINDINGS: An initial pool of 123 studies was found, out of which 17 met the selection criteria and were therefore included. Traumatic experiences as childhood sexual abuse and adverse childhood experiences characterize the relationship between sexual behavior and PDs. From this point of view, sexual compulsivity and sexual risk behaviors, typical of BPD and ASPD, respectively, a

INTRODUCTION: People with personality disorders (PDs) have an elevated suicide risk. However, correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) and suicide attempts (SA) remain largely unknown in this population. A growing body of literature highlights the contribution of the Big Five personality traits in suicide-outcomes. Therefore, the present study investigates the association between the Big Five personality traits and SI and SA in people with PDs while applying the ideation-to-action framework.
METHOD: Data were obtained from 105 treatment-seeking individuals diagnosed with PDs participating in the

The study describes personality traits and the presence of personality disorders and mental disorders in a consecutive series of 130 male prisoners in Swedish jails sentenced for serious criminality. The investigation included a psychiatric examination by means of the Structured Clinical Interview (SCID) as well as information taken from criminal records. Personality assessments were made by means of self-report questionnaires, the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP) and the DSM-IV and ICD-10 Personality Disorder Questionnaire (DIP-Q). The most common mental disorders were alcohol and drug

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia or assisted suicide (EAS) for psychiatric disorders, legal in some countries, remains controversial. Personality disorders are common in psychiatric EAS. They often cause a sense of irremediable suffering and engender complex patient-clinician interactions, both of which could complicate EAS evaluations.
METHODS: We conducted a directed-content analysis of all psychiatric EAS cases involving personality and related disorders published by the Dutch regional euthanasia review committees (N = 74, from 2011 to October 2017).
RESULTS: Most patients were women (76%, n = 52),

Increased schizotypal traits have previously been associated with atypical semantic cognition in community samples. However, no study has yet examined whether adults diagnosed with schizotypal personality disorder (SPD) display atypical semantic fluency and memory. We hypothesized that 24 adults diagnosed with SPD would name more idiosyncratic words on the semantic fluency task and show decreased semantic recall for animal and fruit category words compared with 29 participants with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and a community sample of 96 age-matched controls. We examined whether atyp

Traditional approaches to the diagnosis of personality disorders, including a clinical interview and a self-report, are usually limited by subjectivity and time constraints. Recent developments in artificial intelligence have opened the possibility of more objective and data-driven psychological testing. This paper introduces an AI-powered system that forecasts personality disorders using natural language processing (NLP), speech recognition, and face recognition. The suggested method should help with the initial diagnosis and more tailored mental health solutions. Two benchmark datasets were

The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the diagnostic, the dimensional mean-level, and rank-order stability of personality disorders (PDs) and PD criteria over time. EMBASE, PsycInfo, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched for peer-reviewed studies published in either English, German, or French between the first publication of the third edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III) in 1980 and December 20, 2022. Inclusion criteria were a prospective longitudinal study design, assessing the stability of PDs or PD criteria over a

Criterion A, as represented by Level of Personality Functioning (LPF), offers a means by which to conceptualize the core impairment in self and interpersonal functioning that distinguishes personality disorder (PD) from other forms of psychopathology. One of the most widely cited criticisms of the current Section II in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition categorical diagnostic system is the high level of comorbidity among the categorical PD diagnoses. The Section III alternative Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition model for PDs

BACKGROUND: A growing body of evidence has shown that maladaptive traits and emerging patterns of personality can be traced to an early stage of development and may be assessed in childhood. The goal of present study was to provide preliminary data on the validity of the Coolidge Personality and Neuropsychological Inventory for Children (CPNI), an instrument designed to assess personality pathologies and other clinical conditions in childhood.
METHOD: A sample of 146 clinicians completed the CPNI, as well as the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) to evaluate the behavioral problems and social co

The author uses PubMed searches on clinical studies on personality disorders and finds that the borderline personality disorder is most extensively researched. Mary Zanarini summeries there are four kinds of psychotherapies that are proved to be effective in the treatment of BPD patients, including mentalization based treatment, transference focused therapy, dialectic behavior therapy and schema focused therapy. They are all effective to improve the severity of impulsivity and self-destructiveness. The author then reviews McGlashan's series of extensive follow-up studies on BPD and other menta

Depressive personality disorder (DPD) is a historically important construct that requires empirical attention. This study compares 26 subjects with this disorder to 20 non-DPD subjects who have similar histories of longstanding early-onset depression on three personality measures, the Tridimensional Personality Questionnaire (TPQ), NEO-Five Factor Inventory, and Defense Style Questionnaire (DSQ). The samples were demographically similar and had similar rates of comorbid depression and dysthymia. They differed in that DPD subjects scored significantly higher on Harm Avoidance and Neuroticism, a

OBJECTIVE: The schema mode model offers a new conceptualisation of complex dissociative disorders (CDD) as it explains shifts between identities as shifts between schema modes. Furthermore, in this model CDD is conceived as personality pathology, incorporating core features of personality disorders. This study tested the assumptions of this schema mode model of CDD.
METHOD: Questionnaires measuring personality disorder traits, schemas, schema modes and coping styles were filled out by patients with CDD, borderline personality disorder and avoidant personality disorder (N = 210), and their sco

There is considerable interest in the study of the general factors of personality disorder (g-PD), psychopathology (p factor), and personality (GFP). One prominent interpretation of the g-PD is that it is defined by the self-interpersonal impairments of Criterion A of the DSM-5 Section III. However, no study has directly tested this hypothesis as no prior g-PD study has included a measure of Criterion A. The current study provides a direct test of this hypothesis, along with comparing g-PD with the general factors of psychopathology and personality. Also extracted was a common general factor a

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is common, affecting 2 to 6 % of the general population, with a high prevalence in psychiatric settings. It is characterized by emotional, relational instability and impulsivity, often associated with suicidal behaviors and comorbid disorders (anxiety, depression, addictions). Understanding BPD relies on the concept of relational hypersensitivity, rooted in an altered self-concept. The biopsychosocial approach explains its origins through the interaction between genetic vulnerability and emotional invalidation during childhood, exacerbated by trauma. Treat

PARANOID PERSONALITY DISORDER. The paranoid personality disorder fascinates and worries health professionals, who are sometimes victims of aggressive claims from their patients. Overestimation of oneself, psychorigidity, distrust and relational hyperesthesia characterize the paranoid type of personality disorder. This disorder is often associated with co-morbidities which mask it and promote decompensation towards a delusional disorder with the risk of heteroaggressive acts or towards a severe depressive disorder with suicidal risk. On the basis of regular monitoring and exhaustive assesment,

Caretakers are often intimidated or alienated by patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD), compounding the clinical challenges posed by the severe morbidity, high social costs and substantial prevalence of this disorder in many health-care settings. BPD is found in ∼1.7% of the general population but in 15-28% of patients in psychiatric clinics or hospitals and in a large proportion of individuals seeking help for psychological problems in general health facilities. BPD is characterized by extreme sensitivity to perceived interpersonal slights, an unstable sense of self, intense and

Schizoid personality disorder (ScPD) is one of the "odd cluster" or "cluster A" personality disorders in DSM-IV. In the present article, the authors review information pertaining to the psychometric characteristics of ScPD as gleaned from a search of relevant publications as well as from databases of personality disorder study groups. Comparatively little evidence exists for the validity and reliability of ScPD as a separate, multifaceted personality disorder. Some authors, moreover, have contended that the group of patients termed "schizoid" actually fall into two distinct groups--an "affect
