Service use among school leavers with severe learning difficulties: the views of carers.

School leaving is a time when difficult decisions have to be taken. Difficulties are likely to be particularly complex when the school leaver has severe learning difficulties. Carers of 61 young people living in one East London Health District were interviewed about their child's experience of service use at around the time of school leaving. The timing of school leaving appears to have been well handled, and the experience of those who went on to further education was positive. The school social work service was greatly appreciated. On the debit side, many informants were critical of the qual

The Voluntary Sterilisation Act: Best Interests, Caregivers, and Disability Rights.

How can caregivers' interests be balanced with disability rights in decisions about whether to sterilise an intellectually disabled person? This question is considered in the context of Singapore, a commonwealth country that lacks a test case. Singapore has a lesser-known history of eugenics, and has struck an uneasy compromise between communitarian values and obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in recent years. This article provides an overview of Singaporean law under the Voluntary Sterilisation Act 1974 and the Mental Capacity Ac

Medicaid Enrollment and Service Use Among Adults With Down Syndrome.

IMPORTANCE: Down syndrome is the leading genetic cause of intellectual disability and automatically qualifies individuals for Social Security Insurance. Therefore, Medicaid is the major health insurance provider for a population at high risk for dementia, obesity, and premature mortality. Despite the importance of Medicaid for adults with Down syndrome, little is known about how this population uses Medicaid. OBJECTIVE: To describe enrollment in, health care use in, and cost to Medicaid for adults with Down syndrome compared with adults with intellectual disability and a random sample of adul

Health Needs and Their Relationship with Life Expectancy in People with and without Intellectual Disabilities in England.

Health needs are common in people living with intellectual disabilities, but we do not know how they contribute to life expectancy. We used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) linked with hospital/mortality data in England (2017-2019) to explore life expectancy among people with or without intellectual disabilities, indicated by the presence or absence, respectively, of: epilepsy; incontinence; severe visual loss; severe visual impairment; severe mobility difficulties; cerebral palsy and PEG feeding. Life expectancy and 95% confidence intervals were compared using flexible parametri

Challenges to conducting randomised controlled trials with adults with intellectual disabilities: Experiences of international experts.

BACKGROUND: Globally, conducting randomised controlled trials can be a complex endeavour. The complexity increases when including participants with cognitive or intellectual disabilities. A fuller understanding of the barriers and challenges that can be expected in such trials may help researchers to make their trials more inclusive for people with disabilities. METHOD: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with twelve international trial experts. RESULTS: Eight themes emerged relating to challenges linked to: 1) participant co-morbidities, 2) participant ability levels, 3) ethics and co

A socio-emotional analysis of technology use by people with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) is often thought to enhance the lives of people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and is considered an important aspect of digital inclusion. However, inclusion practices often fail to address societal inequalities that lead to and sustain exclusion. The aim of this research was to enhance understandings of the relationships people with ID form with technology by critically analysing the underlying assumptions of inclusion practices. METHOD: We employed a post-qualitative approach to reanalyse previously collected data

Attitudes towards individuals with disabilities as measured by the implicit association test: a literature review.

Research investigating attitudes towards individuals with disabilities has largely focused on self-reported explicit attitudes. Given that factors such as social desirability may influence explicit attitudes, researchers have developed tools which instead assess less consciously controllable implicit attitudes. Considering research on implicit attitudes thus seems pertinent. A review of studies measuring implicit attitudes towards individuals with physical disabilities (visual, motor or hearing) or intellectual disabilities via the Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald, McGhee, & Schwartz,

Noncompliant behavior of people with mental retardation.

Literature pertaining to noncompliant behavior of people with mental retardation was reviewed. Noncompliant behavior was considered in terms of antecedents (characteristics of instructions), behaviors (characteristics of tasks being refused), and consequences (environmental results of noncompliance). Literature pertaining to nondisabled "oppositional" children was incorporated along with literature pertaining to persons with mental retardation. Research involving antecedent conditions suggested that noncompliance is more likely when instructions are vague and interrupted with other instruction

Self-regulation and mental retardation.

The educational and research implications of defining mental retardation as a self-regulatory disorder were explored. Behavioral, social-learning, and cognitive conceptualizations regarding the structure and development of self-regulation were examined. Emphasis was placed on showing how these conceptualizations compliment each other. Several perspectives were presented, specifically, that both the essential components of the self-regulatory system along with the environments that promote self-regulated behavior must be isolated. Self-regulation was described as a complex skill that develops l

Comparison of rating scales for the diagnosis of dementia in adults with Down's syndrome.

Making a diagnosis of dementia, particularly in its early stages, in a person with intellectual disability can be difficult Some neuropsychological tests which were originally devised for the diagnosis of dementia in the non-intellectually disabled population have been modified for use in people with intellectual disability. Observer-rated scales have also been used for making a diagnosis of dementia in people with intellectual disability. Within the context of a genetic study, the rates of diagnosis of dementia according to different criteria, namely the clinician's diagnosis (ICD-10), the De

Applying adaptive research methods to explore health literacy in young people with intellectual disability.

Young people with intellectual disability experience higher risks for chronic health conditions than their peers. Improving their health literacy could be a strengths-based approach for reducing these risks. However, there is limited research that explores the perspectives of young people with intellectual disability on their health literacy. Given the limited research centring on the voice of young people with intellectual disability, this study examined their health literacy from their own perspectives. We had two aims: (i) explore the health literacy skills and needs of young people with in

[Disability pensions in young age in Norway during 1976-1996].

A 15% increase in the incidence of 16 to 24-year olds drawing disability pension was observed in Norway from 1976 to 93. This increase is mainly a consequence of the higher numbers of pensioners because of birth defects and mental retardation. Prevalence of these conditions, which are clearly related to pregnancy, delivery, and inheritable disorders, may have increased as a consequence of the improved survival of newborn babies observed during the last two decades. A 50% increase in the incidence of disability pensions among 16 to 24-year olds has occurred in the three-year period from 1994 to

The effect of noncontingent sensory reinforcement, contingent sensory reinforcement, and response interruption on stereotypical and self-injurious behavior.

Three analyses were conducted to assess the effects of different consequent stimuli on the rate of stereotypical and self-injurious behavior performed by two individuals with severe developmental disabilities and dual sensory impairments. An analogue functional analysis documented an undifferentiated pattern of problem behavior across all conditions for Participant 1. Data for Participant 2 indicated an undifferentiated pattern with lower frequencies in the demand condition. Stimuli chosen to compete with the type of sensory stimulation produced by the stereotypy and self-injurious behavior we

Behavior problems of educationally handicapped and normal pupils.

Male pupils identified as behaviorally disordered, learning disabled, and educable mentally retarded, as well as nonidentified normal boys, were rated by their teachers on the Behavior Problem Checklist. Analyses of the ratings indicated significant differences for pupil category, Behavior Problem Checklist dimension, and category by dimension interaction, but no significant differences for age alone or in interaction with other factors. Categories of pupils were best discriminated from one another on the basis of Conduct Disorder and Personality Problem dimensions of the Behavior Problem Chec

Decoding intervention for young students with mild intellectual disabilities: A single-subject design study.

Students with intellectual disabilities need more time and explicit instruction to develop word decoding. Most previous research on interventions among these students is performed in English. Therefore, the current study examined the impact of a word-decoding intervention in Swedish on individual students with intellectual disabilities. A single-subject-design study was conducted with five students with mild intellectual disability in the fourth grade. They needed to enhance decoding, and Swedish was their first language. Their word and non-word decoding was measured during the baseline and in

Video prompting procedures to teach science electronic journaling to students with intellectual disability: Leveraging students with disabilities' learning endeavors.

The purpose of this research exploration was to investigate the impact of video prompting procedures on the acquisition of electronic journaling skill, and how to create and present scientific knowledge previously learned by students with intellectual disabilities. Using single-subject, multiple probe, and multiple baseline-design across four participants with moderate intellectual disabilities, results revealed that participants could increase their number of correct, completed steps for creating their electronic journals for the science classes. Results also showcased that participants had a

Evaluation of a sexual abuse prevention program for female Chinese adolescents with mild mental retardation.

The effectiveness of the Behavioral Skills Training program in the primary prevention of sexual abuse for 72 female Chinese adolescents with mild mental retardation was evaluated. Subjects were assigned to either the Behavior Skills Training program or an attention control program. The Behavioral Skills Training group demonstrated greater knowledge regarding sexual abuse and self-protection skills at posttest, which was maintained at 2-month follow-up, though the scores on the recognition of appropriate-touch requests showed a decreasing trend. They also exhibited less fear of objects, people,

The Stanford-Binet: Fourth Edition and form L-M in assessment of young children with mental retardation.

The Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scale: Fourth Edition appears to be poorly suited for the intellectual assessment of children less than 5 years old who are thought to have mild mental retardation and for persons of any age who are thought to have severe mental retardation. The reasons for this conclusion were explained and reasons provided that support the continued use of Form L-M when assessing such children or older individuals with mental retardation.
