General trends and strategies for novel pesticides are summarized. Global pesticide sales and pesticide discovery research are also briefly reviewed. INTRODUCTION: Prenatal exposure to some pesticides can adversely affect male reproductive health in animals. We investigated a possible human association between maternal exposure to 27 organochlorine compounds used as pesticides and cryptorchidism among male children.
DESIGN: Within a prospective birth cohort, we performed a case-control study; 62 milk samples from mothers of cryptorchid boys and 68 from mothers of healthy boys were selected. Milk was collected as individual pools between 1 and 3 months postpartum and analyzed for 27 organochlorine pesticides.

A follow-up to a population-based case-control study of pediatric brain tumors in Los Angeles County, California, involving mothers of 224 cases and 218 controls, investigated the risk of household pesticide use from pregnancy to diagnosis. Current pesticide exposure levels can induce a state of sensitization in exposed workers and only in exceptional situations cause severe intoxication. Three cases are reported--one suffering from urticaria/angio-edema, one from asthma and the other from oculo-rhinitis. Only one subject was atopical. Twenty-one workmen exposed to herbicide as organic mercury compounds and to pesticide as halogenic hydrocarbon has been investigated concerning their fertility. If the concentrations of organic mercury compounds increase in the air of the place of employment then the levels of this heavy metal are also higher in the urine and in the ejaculate, and the fertility is reduced. It could also be established that a correlation exists between the concentration of pesticide in the place of employment and the male fertility, especially in cases with an excess of maximum permitted concentrations.

A greatly increased incidence of hepatic angiosarcoma (H.A.S.) among Egyptian farmers involved in pest-control spraying operations attracted our attention.
