High prevalence of antimicrobial resistance and multidrug resistance among bacterial isolates from diseased pets: Retrospective laboratory data (2015-2017).

Laboratory surveillance and the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) trends and patterns among local isolates have been highly effective in providing comprehensive information for public health decision-making. A total of 396 cases along with 449 specimens were received for antibiotic susceptibility testing at a public university veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Malaysia between 2015 and 2017. Escherichia coli was the most frequently isolated (n = 101, 13%) bacteria, followed by Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (n = 97, 12%) and Streptococcus canis (n = 62, 8%). In cats, S. pseudinte

Successful and Unsuccessful Brain Aging in Pets: Pathophysiological Mechanisms behind Clinical Signs and Potential Benefits from Palmitoylethanolamide Nutritional Intervention.

Canine and feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome is a common neurodegenerative disorder of old age and a natural model of human Alzheimer's disease. With the unavoidable expanding life expectancy, an increasing number of small animals will be affected. Although there is no cure, early detection and intervention are vitally important to delay cognitive decline. Knowledge of cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying disease onset and progression is an equally decisive factor for developing effective approaches. Uncontrolled neuroinflammation, orchestrated in the central nervous system mainly

Exposure to household furry pets influences the gut microbiota of infant at 3-4 months following various birth scenarios.

BACKGROUND: Early-life exposure to household pets has the capacity to reduce risk for overweight and allergic disease, especially following caesarean delivery. Since there is some evidence that pets also alter the gut microbial composition of infants, changes to the gut microbiome are putative pathways by which pet exposure can reduce these risks to health. To investigate the impact of pre- and postnatal pet exposure on infant gut microbiota following various birth scenarios, this study employed a large subsample of 746 infants from the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development Study (C

Bacteriophage cocktails for combating multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infections in animals: A comprehensive review across pets, livestock, and wildlife.

Multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, including methicillin-resistant strains (MRSA) pose an increasing risk to animal health and are a known zoonotic risk in the One Health paradigm. The use of bacteriophage cocktails (combinations of two or more lytic phages) have gained interest for expanding host range, inhibiting phage-resistant mutants, and disrupting biofilms, a growing challenge in conventional antibiotic therapy. This review aims to summarise the existing literature on phage cocktails against MDR S. aureus in three different animal populations: pets, livestock and wild animals. F

DETECTION OF RICKETTSIA AND BARTONELLA IN FLEAS AND TICKS COLLECTED FROM PETS AT VETERINARY CLINICS IN GEORGIA, UNITED STATES.

Many human infections are transmitted through contact with household pets. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the occurrence of ticks and fleas on pets (dogs and cats) in local veterinary clinics in Statesboro, Georgia. We screened ectoparasites for Rickettsia and Bartonella and assessed owner knowledge and practices related to tick- and flea-borne diseases. Ectoparasites were collected and identified using standard taxonomic keys, and their genomic DNA was extracted. Three TaqMan assays were used to test ectoparasites for flea-borne Rickettsia DNA. Nested PCR targeting

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances: using comparative medicine to understand exposure and adverse health outcomes in people and their pets.

One of the important human health benefits of keeping pets may be to serve as an early warning system for indoor childhood exposure to toxic chemicals such as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The stain-resistant properties and environmental stability of PFAS make them a preferred choice for protective coatings and lubricants, and they have been used for years in various manufacturing and industrial processes around the world. Although the use of PFAS has arguably improved many commercial products, they have been linked to adverse health outcomes such as developmental delays, liver d

S. pseudintermedius and S. aureus lineages with transmission ability circulate as causative agents of infections in pets for years.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (SP) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA) are common colonizers of companion animals, but they are also considered opportunistic pathogens, causing diseases of diverse severity. This study focused on the identification and characterization of 33 coagulase-positive staphylococci isolated from diseased pets (28 dogs and five cats) during 2009-2011 in a veterinary hospital in Spain in order to stablish the circulating lineages and their antimicrobial resistance profile. RESULTS: Twenty-eight isolates were identified as SP and five as SA. Nine methicillin-res

Bacterial Zoonoses Transmitted by Household Pets: State-of-the-Art and Future Perspectives for Targeted Research and Policy Actions.

The close contact between household pets and people offers favourable conditions for bacterial transmission. In this article, the aetiology, prevalence, transmission, impact on human health and preventative measures are summarized for selected bacterial zoonoses transmissible by household pets. Six zoonoses representing distinct transmission routes were selected arbitrarily based on the available information on incidence and severity of pet-associated disease caused by zoonotic bacteria: bite infections and cat scratch disease (physical injuries), psittacosis (inhalation), leptospirosis (conta

Infection by Eucoleus aerophilus in dogs and cats: is another extra-intestinal parasitic nematode of pets emerging in Italy?

The occurrence of the infection by the lungworm Eucoleus aerophilus (syn. Capillaria aerophila) in dogs and cats from Italy has been evaluated with conventional diagnostic procedures. Individual faecal samples from 569 dogs and 200 cats were undertaken to faecal flotation with sugar and zinc sulphate solution. Sixteen dogs (2.8%) and 11 cats (5.5%) scored positive for eggs of E. aerophilus when samples were processed with either of the two flotation solutions. Overall 14 of 16 dogs and eight of 11 cats infected by E. aerophilus showed respiratory symptoms and the most common were general respi

MR-guided reconstruction of PET data in spinal cord PET/MRI.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate PET reconstruction in spinal cord PET/MRI is challenging due to the small size of the structure and interference from background activity. The aim of this study was to establish whether MR-guided PET reconstruction can improve the accuracy of measured uptake in the spinal cord. METHODS: The hybrid kernel expectation maximisation (HKEM) algorithm was evaluated on a digital anthropomorphic phantom (XNAT), and an implementation of a modified asymmetric Bowsher's prior incorporating both PET and MR data was evaluated on clinical test cases. The methods were compared against

Operationalizing the centiloid scale for [18F]florbetapir PET studies on PET/MRI.

INTRODUCTION: The Centiloid scale aims to harmonize amyloid beta (Aβ) positron emission tomography (PET) measures across different analysis methods. As Centiloids were created using PET/computerized tomography (CT) data and are influenced by scanner differences, we investigated the Centiloid transformation with data from Insight 46 acquired with PET/magnetic resonanceimaging (MRI). METHODS: We transformed standardized uptake value ratios (SUVRs) from 432 florbetapir PET/MRI scans processed using whole cerebellum (WC) and white matter (WM) references, with and without partial volume correction

Choline PET and PET/CT in Primary Diagnosis and Staging of Prostate Cancer.

PET and PET/CT using [(11)C]- and [(18)F]-labelled choline derivates is increasingly being used for imaging of primary and recurrent prostate cancer. While PET and PET/CT with [(11)C]- and [(18)F]-labelled choline derivates in patients suffering from biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer has been examined in many studies that demonstrate an increasing importance, its role in the primary staging of prostate cancer is still a matter of debate.Morphological and functional imaging techniques such as CT, MRI and TRUS have demonstrated only limited accuracy for the diagnosis of primary prostate

Controversies in the management of colorectal liver metastases: role of PET and PET/CT.

Positron emission tomography (PET) using [F-18]-2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose (FDG) has emerged as a promising diagnostic modality in recurrent colorectal cancer. Data in the literature show that the addition of FDG-PET changes patient management in up to 30% of patients with potentially resectable liver metastases, mainly by detecting previously unknown extrahepatic disease. Furthermore, FDG-PET is useful in the follow-up of patients who underwent surgical procedures of the liver, since it is sensitive in detecting residual or relapse malignancy in scarred liver tissue following both resection a
