Pharmacy practice in a chemical-dependency treatment center.

The role of a pharmacist in a chemical-dependency treatment center is described. A pharmacist joined the staff of an outpatient methadone maintenance and chemical-dependency clinic at the request of the clinic's medical staff. In addition to the standard dispensing role, the pharmacist provides drug information, counsels staff and patients, and serves as the medical clinic coordinator. The pharmacist is also responsible for taking medical and drug-use histories, initially evaluating the degree of chemical dependency, assisting in the development of drug therapy plans for chemically dependent p

From public healthcare centers to community pharmacies: the new Portuguese seasonal vaccination strategy.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered how countries organize their vaccination strategies. The ongoing discussion now focuses on how these strategies can be integrated into routine vaccination programs. In this context, we illustrate how Portugal has incorporated influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations into community pharmacies in the aftermath of the pandemic. The Portuguese strategy for the 2023-2024 vaccination campaign was led by the Executive Board of the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS) and the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health, in collaboration with over 12 public and p

Non-prescription antibiotic dispensing in community pharmacies in jordan: a simulated patient study.

Inappropriate antibiotic use in community settings is a major contributor to antimicrobial resistance, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where regulatory enforcement may be inconsistent. Community pharmacies are a critical interface between health systems and the public; however, real-world dispensing practices remain insufficiently characterized in many settings. This study evaluated the prevalence, behavioral drivers, and clinical quality of non-prescription antibiotic dispensing in Jordanian community pharmacies using a simulated patient methodology.A cross-sectional simulate

[Examination of the Usefulness of Health Consultations in Community Pharmacies for Elderly People].

In this study, we conducted a web-based survey of 800 elderly people to clarify sex and regional differences in the usefulness of individual health consultations in community pharmacies for improving the health of elderly people. The results demonstrated that the health consultations were more useful for those with high health consciousness than those with low health consciousness and men living alone had the greatest need for health consultations. Among residents of urban areas, "physical activity and exercise" affected the usefulness of the health consultations for both men and women. In con

Collection of medical drug information in pharmacies: Drug Event Monitoring (DEM) in Japan.

To establish a system for collecting and reporting information from community pharmacists such as that on adverse effects, the Japan Pharmaceutical Association (JPA) conducts Drug Event Monitoring (DEM). In the fiscal year 2002, a survey was carried out to clarify the incidence of sleepiness due to antiallergic drugs. The investigated active ingredients were ebastine, fexofenadine hydrochloride, cetirizine hydrochloride, and loratadine. Community pharmacists asked the following question to patients who visited their pharmacies: "Have you ever become sleepy after taking this drug?" During a 4-w

Pharmaceutical care for patients with skin diseases: a campaign year at Swedish pharmacies.

A pharmaceutical care programme for pharmacy customers/patients with skin disorders was carried out at all Swedish pharmacies in 1993 (Skin Year). The objective of the campaign was to increase awareness, compliance and appropriateness of the treatment of skin diseases in patients attending pharmacies. The campaign was carried out primarily at pharmacies and in close contact with other health-care professionals. A variety of promotional material was produced and made available to the pharmacies. The activities were primarily directed towards pharmacy customers but also towards the staff of loca

The PrEP Pharmacy Reach Study: Protocol for the Creation of Maps to Visualize the Impact of Expanding Access to HIV Prevention Services Through Pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Despite the proven efficacy of preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in reducing the risk of HIV transmission, uptake remains suboptimal among populations with limited access and availability to PrEP-prescribing locations, particularly in the Southern United States. The accessibility of pharmacies positions them as a promising resource for expanding PrEP delivery and access and supporting uptake and adherence through HIV prevention programs to reduce geographic disparities. OBJECTIVE: This study outlines a geospatial protocol to assess disparities in national PrEP availability. The aim o

Support and perceived barriers to implementing pre-exposure prophylaxis screening and dispensing in pharmacies: Examining concordance between pharmacy technicians and pharmacists.

OBJECTIVES: Recent legislation to expand pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) screening and dispensing in pharmacies may significantly improve PrEP access for people at a high risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Studies have shown that pharmacists show wide support for PrEP expansion in pharmacies. However, pharmacy technicians are often the first point of contact for patients in pharmacies and are required to implement many of the tasks to ensure patients of a pharmacy receive adequate services. The purpose of this study was to assess pharmacists' and pharmacy technicians' per

Current practices, opportunities to improve, and behavioral targets related to HPV vaccination in community pharmacies: A qualitative study of pharmacy staff and parents.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes 39,300 cancers annually in the United States, yet adolescent vaccination coverage remains suboptimal. Community pharmacies are highly accessible and authorized to vaccinate adolescents but remain underutilized for HPV vaccination. This study examined how current pharmacy vaccination practices align with parent expectations and identified modifiable behavioral and implementation targets to improve uptake. We conducted a qualitative study using key informant interviews with pharmacy staff (n = 11) and parents of adolescents ages 9-17 (n = 13) between February -

Community health assessment and monitoring in the pharmacy (CHAMP): Protocol for a randomized stepped-wedge trial of lung cancer screening in community pharmacies.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread insurance coverage and USPSTF recommendations, less than 20% of eligible individuals undergo annual lung cancer screening nationally. This low uptake suggests that innovative screening modalities and referral pathways are needed. We hypothesize that utilizing community pharmacies for screening and connecting patients to either traditional imaging or novel, blood-based modalities will improve uptake among eligible patients. METHODS: We describe a multiphase study. First, during the initial phase, to assess the feasibility of community pharmacist-led lung cancer s

Exploring the potential extended role of community pharmacy in the management of osteoarthritis: A multi-methods study with pharmacy staff and other healthcare professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis is the commonest form of chronic joint pain, which patients often self-manage before seeking healthcare advice. Patients frequently seek advice from community pharmacies, and a recent policy has recommended integrating community pharmacies into long-term condition pathways. This study explored community pharmacy teams' (CPs) and other healthcare professionals' (HCPs) views on community pharmacies providing an extended role for osteoarthritis management, identifying potential barriers and facilitators to this. METHODS: A multi-methods study comprising surveys of CP

Participant and GP perspectives and experiences of screening for undiagnosed type 2 diabetes in community pharmacy during the Pharmacy Diabetes Screening Trial.

BACKGROUND: The Pharmacy Diabetes Screening Trial (PDST) evaluated three approaches to screening for undiagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in community pharmacy: (1) paper-based risk assessment (AUSDRISK) alone; and AUSDRISK followed by a point of care test if AUSDRISK ≥ 12; with either (2) HbA1c; or (3) small capillary blood glucose Test (scBGT). This paper reports the perspectives and experiences of the pharmacy screening service of two key stakeholder groups: screening participants and general practitioners (GPs). METHODS: All referred participants (n = 2242) received an online surve

How community pharmacies can raise uterine cancer awareness among women from ethnic minority populations.

OBJECTIVES: Community pharmacies are a potential route to reach underserved groups due to their locations and staff, who often reflect the diversity of the populations they serve. This study aimed to explore the potential for a uterine cancer awareness campaign encouraging earlier presentation of red-flag symptoms among ethnic minority women conducted through community pharmacies. METHODS: Semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with pharmacy staff to explore the role of the pharmacy in cancer awareness, the impact of language and cultural sensitives on discussions, and signpost
