Septal and entorhinal projections to the hippocampus show a considerable overlap in their target structures in the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus (DG) and stratum lacunosum-moleculare of the cornu ammonis (CA). Employing anterograde tracing methods, it was investigated in which way the morphological pattern of the septohippocampal projections were influenced by lateral entorhinal cortex (LEA) lesions. Anterograde filling of neurons from soma to axonal terminals with Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L) revealed lesion-induced changes in innervation patterns in the DG but not in CA

Wild-caught Phlebotomus ariasi Tonnoir, starved until their sugar meals had been digested, were caged for 24 h with plants or plants infested with aphids and then tested for fructose, a constituent of plant sap. No evidence was found that the flies took sap directly from nine types of plants present in their habitat. About two-thirds of flies caged with oak (Quercus ilex L.) infested with an aphid [Lachnus roboris (L.)] and about a fifth kept with leaves of the french bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) infested with an aphid took honeydew. Experiments with three other aphid species gave negative res

White kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) episperm is an abundant by-product of legume processing that contains a distinct class of non-digestible polysaccharides with high resistance to small intestinal hydrolysis. These features confer unique fermentability and the potential to modulate gut microbial ecology. Given emerging links between age-related cognitive decline, oxidative stress, inflammation, and gut microbiota dysbiosis, whether dietary white kidney bean episperm polysaccharides (WKBEP) could alleviate cognitive impairment in a D-galactose-induced aging mouse model was investigated.

We have already published a review about the results of clinical trials evaluating the effects of selected nutraceuticals on glycemia in humans. In this second part, we describe the role of other nutraceuticals involved in dysglycemia. The available evidence showed promising hypoglycemic effects of the nutraceuticals reviewed both for their efficacy and safety profile. However, contradictory results as regard the efficacy of some supplements such as Allium sativum, Juglans regia, and Lycium barbarum on glucose homeostasis have emerged from some clinical studies. Other nutraceuticals including

A novel methodology based on ultrasonic-assisted sequential extraction, dispersive-SPE purification, and single-injection on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is proposed, for the first time, to simultaneously measure 14 tri-OPEs and 9 di-OPEs in plant tissues. The samples were successively ultrasonicated with a mixture of hexane:dichloromethane (1:1, v/v) and 8% acetic acid in acetonitrile for extracting tri- and di-OPEs purified with graphitized carbon black and quantitated on LC-MS/MS at the same time. The recoveries of targeted tri- and di-OPEs in the matrix spike r

Legumes are global staple foods with multiple human health properties that merit detailed composition analysis in cooked forms. This study analyzed cowpea [Vigna unguiculata] (three varieties: Dagbantuya, Sangyi, and Tukara), pigeon pea [Cajanus cajan], and common bean [Phaseolus vulgaris] using two distinct ultra-performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) platforms and analytical workflows. Comparisons between cowpea and pigeon pea consumed in Ghana, and common bean (navy bean) from USA, revealed 75 metabolites that differentiated cowpeas. Metabolite fold-change comparisons

Available treatments for invasive fungal infections have limitations, including toxicity and the emergence of resistant strains. Therefore, there is an urgent need for alternative solutions. Because of their unique mode of action and high selectivity, plant defensins (PDs) are worthy therapeutic candidates. Chemical synthesis remains a preferred method for the production of many peptide-based therapeutics. Given the relatively long sequence of PDs, as well as their complicated posttranslational modifications, the synthetic route can be considered challenging. Here, we describe a total synthesi

Exposure of the source leaf of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Black Valentine) for 2 hours to 2.9 microliters per liter SO(2) inhibited the net photosynthetic rate an average of 75% and, simultaneously, the translocation rate an average of 45%. Calculations indicated that the experimentally determined translocation rates from SO(2)-stressed leaves were lower than were the rates expected on the basis of the observed reductions in photosynthesis. It is inferred that, under SO(2) stress, the phloem-loading system becomes a major limiting step in controlling the translocation rate.Following remov

The vestibular system is involved in maintaining stable blood pressure and respiration during changes in posture and is essential for eliciting motion sickness-related vomiting. Because the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) participates in the regulation of sympathetic and inspiratory outflow and the triggering of emesis, we tested the hypothesis that this region receives vestibular inputs in cats. In one set of experiments, microinjections of the tracer Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei labeled projections to the middle and lateral regions of the

Two classes of ligand-binding molecules, (1) monoclonal antibodies (MABs) and (2) lectins, were used as probes to investigate the cell biology of human trabecular cells. We raised MABs by using human trabecular meshwork as the immunogen. One MAB (KAa25D7) consistently recognized two polypeptides with molecular weights of approximately 42 and 49 kilodaltons. The former comigrated with actin and the latter was shown by fractionation and extraction studies to be a macromolecular complex. Four lectins (wheat germ agglutinin, concanavalin A, Phaseolus vulgaris leukoagglutinin I, and Ulex europaeus

Mineral deficiencies represent a global challenge that needs to be urgently addressed. An adequate intake of iron and zinc results in a balanced diet that reduces chances of impairment of many metabolic processes that can lead to clinical consequences. In plants, bioavailability of such nutrients is reduced by presence of compounds such as phytic acid, that can chelate minerals and reduce their absorption. Biofortification of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) represents an important strategy to reduce mineral deficiencies, especially in areas of the world where this crop plays a key role in

To evaluate reactive absorption of ozone (O3) in the leaf apoplast, amphistomatous leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris L. were allowed to take up O3 through the stomata on the lower leaf surface at high rates for 3-5 min. Up to 5% of the O3 taken up diffused through the leaf and emerged from the stomata on the upper surface, suggesting above-zero O3 concentrations in the leaf intercellular air space, [O3]i. Moreover, measurements revealed that [O3]i increased during exposure to the pollutant. Time patterns of O3 fluxes through the gas phase and into the aqueous apoplast indicated that the increase in

The research assessed the physical and chemical traits, as well as the metabolomic diversity, of sixteen kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) accessions exhibiting varying seed coat colors. Significant differences were noted in the color dimensions (L*, a*, b*). Antioxidant activity exhibited significant variation, with 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl values ranging from 58 to 1179 and ABTS values from 476 to 2121 µmol TE/100 g. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.84) was observed between antioxidant activity and seed coat color. Polyphenolic profiling identified ten phenolic acids and flavonoid

Future breeding efforts and the resilience of common bean production are constrained by the absence of a comprehensive synthesis of resistance sources, breeding strategies, and molecular tools across the Andean and Mesoamerican gene pools. This review consolidates current knowledge on disease resistance breeding in common bean, focusing on major resistance genes and quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with key diseases including anthracnose, angular leaf spot, halo blight, common bacterial blight, rust, and viral infections. The Andean gene pool predominantly contributes race-specific re

In this study, kidney bean protein isolate (KPI) and basil seed gum (BSG) thermal aggregates were prepared to form cold-set gels (KB) by adding sodium citrate (SC) and glucono-δ-lactone (GDL). The structure and gel properties of the cold-set gels were investigated. Results showed that the gels added with SC had higher water holding capacity and lower gel strength than GDL-induced gels. While the cold-set gels induced by GDL with the addition of SC (KB-GDL/SC) possessed compact gel network with higher viscoelasticity. Compared with KPI cold-set gels, the KB cold-set gels exhibited higher gel st

Many plants respond to herbivory by arthropods with an induced emission of volatiles such as green leaf volatiles and terpenoids. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) can attract carnivores, for example, predators and parasitoids. We investigated the significance of terpenoids in attracting herbivores and carnivores in two tritrophic systems where we manipulated the terpenoid emission by treating the plants with fosmidomycin, which inhibits one of the terpenoid biosynthetic pathways and consequently terpenoid emission. In the 'lima bean' system, volatiles from spider-mite-infested f

The role of jasmonic acid in the induction of stomatal closure is well known. However, its role in regulating root hydraulic conductivity (L) has not yet been explored. The objectives of the present research were to evaluate how JA regulates L and how calcium and abscisic acid (ABA) could be involved in such regulation. We found that exogenous methyl jasmonate (MeJA) increased L of Phaseolus vulgaris, Solanum lycopersicum and Arabidopsis thaliana roots. Tomato plants defective in JA biosynthesis had lower values of L than wild-type plants, and that L was restored by addition of MeJA. The incre

Pseudomonas syringae pv. phaseolicola is the causal agent of halo blight disease of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), which is characterized by watersoaked lesions surrounded by a chlorotic halo resulting from the action of a non-host specific toxin known as phaseolotoxin. This toxin inhibits the enzyme ornithine carbamoyltransferase involved in the arginine biosynthesis pathway. It was previously reported that genes within the Pht cluster were involved in the regulation and synthesis of phaseolotoxin. The GacS/GacA two-component signal transduction system controls important pathogenicity and vir

In the present study the telencephalic connections between the centres of the tectofugal and thalamofugal pathways were investigated with Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin and biotinylated dextran-amine anterograde tracers in chicken using light and electron microscopy. No direct connection was found between the visual Wulst and the ectostriatum or the telencephalic centres of the tectofugal and thalamofugal pathways. Besides other projections, the visual Wulst emitted fibres also to the middle and lateral parts of the hyperstriatum ventrale. Further experiments revealed that the middle part

The pattern of lectin histochemistry in formalin fixed, paraffin embedded normal jejunal and subtotal villous atrophy specimens from patients with gluten sensitive enteropathy were compared. There was no significant difference in the binding pattern of five lectins (Arachis hypogaea, Canavalia ensiformis, Lens culinaris, Phaseolus vulgaris and Triticum vulgaris) between normal and abnormal specimens. There were significant changes in the binding pattern of three lectins (Dolichos biflorus, Ulex europaeus, Ricinus communis), with special reference to goblet cells staining. These changes were pr
