Diagnostic ratio of nitrated phenols as a new method for the identification of pollution emission sources.

Nitrated phenols (NPs) are emitted from biomass burning and vehicles emissions, or produced by oxidation of phenolic precursors. Previous studies have investigated the emission factors of NPs from various primary emission sources. However, there is no study on the source apportionment method for the diagnostic ratio of NPs. In this study, a new source apportionment method is established using a diagnostic ratio of NPs. Two categories (methyl-nitrocatechols and methyl-nitrophenols) of NP diagnostic ratios, are proposed for source apportionment of primary aerosols. In order to show the accuracy

A kind of HIV-1 protease inhibitors containing phenols with antiviral activity against DRV-resistant variants.

Based upon the preliminary design of enhancing genetic barrier to drug-resistant viral mutants by maximizing hydrogen-bonding or other van der Waals contacts, we have designed, synthesized and biologically evaluated a new class of HIV-1 protease inhibitors with phenol derived P2 ligands and nitro or halogens in P2' ligands. Results indicate that a majority of inhibitors exhibit robust enzyme inhibitory with IC50 values in picomolar or single digit nanomolar ranges. Among which, compound 17d displays potency with IC50 value of 21 pM and high protease selectivity. Of note, 17d exhibits greater a

16S rRNA gene profiling of bacterial communities mediating production of tsetse attractive phenols in mammalian urine.

Several types of odours are involved in the location of host animals by tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae), a vector of animal African trypanosomiasis. Host animals' ageing urine has been shown to be the source of a phenolic blend attractive to the tsetse. Nevertheless, limited research has been performed on the microbial communities' role in the production of phenols. This study aimed at profiling bacterial communities mediating the production of tsetse attractive phenols in mammalian urine. Urine samples were collected from African buffalo (Syncerus caffer), cattle (Bos taurus) and eland (Taurotr

Structure-activity relationships for binding of 4-substituted triazole-phenols to macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF).

Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a versatile protein that plays a role in inflammation, autoimmune diseases and cancers. Development of novel inhibitors will enable further exploration of MIF as a drug target. In this study, we investigated structure-activity relationships of MIF inhibitors using a MIF tautomerase activity assay to measure binding. Importantly, we notified that transition metals such as copper (II) and zinc (II) interfere with the MIF tautomerase activity under the assay conditions applied. EDTA was added to the assay buffer to avoid interference of residual hea

Preterm birth in relation to the bisphenol A replacement, bisphenol S, and other phenols and parabens.

INTRODUCTION: Preterm birth continues to be a significant public heath concern and is a leading cause of perinatal and infant mortality. Environmental exposures to phenols and parabens are suspected to potentially contribute to the pathology of preterm birth, yet limited human studies have characterized the extent to which these toxicants are associated with birth outcomes. METHODS: We examined the associations between phenols, parabens, and preterm birth, within pregnant women who were recruited early in gestation into the LIFECODES cohort at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachus

[Leukoderma caused by chemicals: mechanisms underlying 4-alkyl/aryl-substituted phenols- and rhododendrol-induced melanocyte loss].

Chemical leukoderma is a skin depigmentation disorder known to occur in manufactural workplace through contact with chemicals, such as monobenzyl ether of hydroquinone (MBEH) and 4-tert- butylphenol (4-TBP). In the skin depigmented -legions induced by these chemicals, the number of melanocyte was severely decreased. Anti-melanoma agent 4-cysteaminylphenol (4-SCAP) and its derivatives are also known to cause leukoderma. Evidence has accumulated supporting that typical class of chemicals causing leukoderma is "4-alkyl/aryl-substituted phenols/catechols", which are structurally similar to melanin

Identification of simple substituted phenols with thyromimetic activity: cardiac effects of 3,5-diiodo-4-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid.

To define the minimal structural requirements for cardiac activity of thyroid hormone analogs, a series of substituted phenols were screened for their ability to bind bacterially expressed thyroid hormone receptors. Compounds with binding activity then were tested for their ability to induce expression of alpha-myosin heavy chain mRNA in primary cultures of fetal rat cardiomyocytes, a sensitive marker for potential inotropic activity. 3,5-Diiodo-4-hydroxyphenylpropionic acid (DIHPA) was found to bind specifically to bacterially expressed alpha-1 and beta-1 thyroid hormone receptors (Kaff appro

Phenolic acid-grafted starch nanoparticles as Pickering emulsion stabilizers: Linking the molecular structure of phenolic acids to emulsion stability.

Phenolic acid-grafted starch nanoparticles (PA-SNPs) were fabricated via laccase-mediated oxidation using ferulic acid (FA), caffeic acid (CA), gallic acid (GA), and tannic acid (TA) to develop multifunctional Pickering stabilizers with enhanced interfacial and antioxidant properties. Phenolic acids (PAs) grafting significantly altered the physicochemical characteristics of SNPs, including particle size, ζ-potential, hydrophobicity, and antioxidant activity, in a structure-dependent manner. The methoxy-substituted aromatic structure of FA primarily enhanced particle wettability, while the high

Efficient Extraction of Phenols from Coal Tar and Preparation of Phenolic Resin-Based Porous Carbon for Advanced Supercapacitor Application.

Developing simple and efficient extraction methods for phenolic substances from coal tar, which facilitate their direct transformation into high-performance electrode materials, holds considerable practical significance. In this study, amide-zinc chloride deep eutectic solvents are employed for efficient phenol extraction. The optimal phenol extraction process is subsequently investigated, and it is found that the robust hydrogen bonding interactions between solvents and phenols significantly enhance extraction efficiency. Notably, without the need for back-extraction, formaldehyde and tetraet

Characterisation, release and migration of phenolic compounds from resoles used in polyester-phenol coatings intended for food contact materials.

Resoles are multifarious pre-polymeric resins produced by the condensation of basic chemicals phenols, formaldehyde and optionally aliphatic alcohols like butanol. They are widely used as cross-linkers to form resistant internal coatings on metal surfaces of cans, containers or closures. Although the application of resoles is common in food contact, usually little is known about their exact composition, the toxicological hazards of their individual constituents and the migration of phenolic compounds, e.g., of the potentially endocrine-disrupting chemical bisphenol F. Our study fills major gap

Correspondence between community structure and function during succession in phenol- and phenol-plus-trichloroethene-fed sequencing batch reactors.

The effects of more than 2 years of trichloroethene (TCE) application on community succession and function were studied in two aerobic sequencing batch reactors. One reactor was fed phenol, and the second reactor was fed both phenol and TCE in sequence twice per day. After initiation of TCE loading in the second reactor, the TCE transformation rates initially decreased, but they stabilized with an average second-order rate coefficient of 0.044 liter mg(-1) day(-1) for 2 years. In contrast, the phenol-fed reactor showed higher and unstable TCE transformation rates, with an average rate coeffici

Synthesis of polycyclic aromatic quinones by continuous flow electrochemical oxidation: anodic methoxylation of polycyclic aromatic phenols (PAPs).

The electrochemical oxidation of polycyclic aromatic phenols (PAPs) has been developed in a microfluidic cell to synthesize polycyclic aromatic quinones (PAQs). Methanol was used as nucleophile to trap the phenoxonium cation formed in the oxidation as an acetal, that later were hydrolysed to the quinone. Formation of hydrogen gas as the cathode reaction caused challenges in the flow cell and were overcome by recycling the reaction mixture through the cell at increased flow rate several times. The specific quinones formed were guided by the position of an initial hydroxy group on the polycyclic
