Phonation Threshold Pressure/Flow for Reflecting Glottal Closure in Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: Previous theoretical analysis predicted that phonation threshold flow (PTF) could be a more sensitive aerodynamic measure than phonation threshold pressure (PTP) for reflecting glottal incompetence. This study investigated the feasibility of whether PTP and PTF may differentiate subjects with unilateral adductor vocal fold paralysis and paresis (UAVFP) from those without, and whether PTP and PTF could reflect the extent of incomplete glottal closure associated with UAVFP. METHODS: PTP and PTF were quantified for 13 subjects with UAVFP and 21 control subjects with normal voice, and

Brain Activity During Phonation in Women With Muscle Tension Dysphonia: An fMRI Study.

OBJECTIVES: The main objectives of this functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study are (1) to investigate brain activity during phonation in women with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) in comparison with healthy controls; and (2) to explain the neurophysiological mechanism of laryngeal hyperfunction/tension during phonation in patients with MTD. METHODS: Ten women with MTD and fifteen healthy women participated in this study. The fMRI experiment was carried out using a block design paradigm. Brain activation during phonation and exhalation was analyzed using BrainVoyager software. RESU

Electroglottographic evaluation of age and gender effects during sustained phonation and connected speech.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of age and gender on selected vocal fold vibratory behaviors during vowel prolongation and connected speech using electroglottography (EGG). Forty-six young and older individuals (23 males and 23 females) with normal voices participated in this study. EGG parameters including fundamental frequency and contact quotient were measured during sustained vowel prolongation and connected speech tasks. Significant age-by-gender interactions were found for both parameters. Moreover, results from discriminant function analyses revealed that the ov

Cumulative Enhancement in Naïve L3 Tone Perception: The Perception of Pitch and Phonation Type.

Previous research has shown that tonal second language (L2) experience can enhance the third language (L3) tone perception of native speakers of non-tone languages. However, tone is a multidimensional concept, and phonation type also serves as an important cue in the tone perception of some tone languages. In this study, 38 native English speakers of different Mandarin proficiency levels, 15 native English and 15 native Mandarin speakers, all of whom were naïve to the Wenzhou Wu dialect, participated in an AX discrimination task. The Wenzhou dialect was used for the naïve L3 stimuli because of

The maximum phonation time as marker for voice treatment efficacy: A network meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: There is a diversity in treatment approaches for voice therapy in which aerodynamic treatment effects between the approaches are lacking. The evidence of voice treatments on the maximum phonation time (MPT) was quantified using the statistical approach of a network meta-analysis (NMA). DATA SOURCES: Three databases and manual search from inception to November 2021 were evaluated. STUDY SELECTION: Studies were considered which were reports of randomised controlled/clinical trials (RCT) evaluating the efficacy of a specific voice therapy treatment using MPT as an outcome measure in ad

Subglottal pressure oscillations in anechoic and resonant conditions and their influence on excised larynx phonations.

Excised larynges serve as natural models for studying behavior of the voice source. Acoustic resonances inside the air-supplying tubes below the larynx (i.e., subglottal space), however, interact with the vibratory behavior of the larynges and obscure their inherent vibration properties. Here, we explore a newly designed anechoic subglottal space which allows removing its acoustic resonances. We performed excised larynx experiments using both anechoic and resonant subglottal spaces in order to analyze and compare, for the very first time, the corresponding subglottal pressures, electroglottogr

Objective assessment of autophony during phonation in the diagnosis of patulous Eustachian tube patients.

OBJECTIVE: A system enabling the objective assessment of the transmission of voice sounds to the external auditory canal (EAC) during phonation has recently been revised. Our aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of this new system in the diagnosis of patulous Eustachian tube (PET) patients by comparing the results obtained using this method with those obtained from conventional objective tests to diagnose PET. METHODS: A prospective survey of medical records was included with definite PET, possible PET, and sensorineural hearing loss as control. The measurement system consists of a personal

Effects of Varying Lengths and Diameters During Straw Phonation on an Excised Canine Model.

OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: Straw phonation, a well-established method of vocal exercise, started over 100 years ago. However, some of the most basic questions about best practices remain including the ideal extension length and the ideal restriction (semiocclusion) diameter. This study aims to help answer these questions by looking at both separately, with all other variables controlled. METHODS: Four (4) straws with lengths of 5, 25, 50, and 75 centimeters and 4 restrictions with diameters of 3, 9, 15, and 21 mm were tested, separately. They were attached to the end of a simulated vocal tract whi

Over-adduction of the unaffected vocal fold during phonation in the unilaterally paralyzed larynx.

CONCLUSIONS: Over-adduction of the unaffected vocal fold may not compensate vocal function in unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP). OBJECTIVE: To determine whether over-adduction of the unaffected vocal fold has any impact on vocal function in patients with UVFP. METHODS: A total of 101 patients with UVFP who underwent three-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) examination of the larynx served as subjects. Three-dimensional endoscopic images together with coronal images during phonation were produced to evaluate over-adduction of the unaffected fold, posterior glottal gap, and differences

Robust acoustic representation of Japanese vowels under phonation variability using dynamic spectral analysis.

Phonation-induced acoustic variability, particularly in whispered speech, poses persistent challenges for stable vowel representation. Conventional static formant-based descriptors often fail to capture the dynamic spectral behavior of vowels under such conditions. This study evaluates the robustness of acoustic feature representations for Japanese vowels across normal and whispered phonation, comparing static formant measures with dynamic spectral features derived from Vowel Inherent Spectral Change (VISC). Dynamic features are used to characterize continuous formant trajectory patterns, whil

Mechanical Effect of Vocal Fold Nodules on Phonation: Physical and Computational Modeling Approach.

BACKGROUND: Vocal fold (VF) nodules are bilaterally symmetrical thickenings that grow in the middle part of the VFs and disrupt VF oscillations. Yet the physical mechanisms underlying their impact on phonation remain poorly understood. METHODS: We used an magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based physical model of the VFs to study how the size and stiffness of VF nodules affect phonation. The MRI model was based on geometry scanned from a real human larynx, providing a realistic representation of human vocalization. Left and right VFs were fabricated independently to account for their slightly a

Visualizing the Vibration of Laryngeal Tissue during Phonation Using Ultrafast Plane Wave Ultrasonography.

Ultrafast plane wave ultrasonography is employed in this study to visualize the vibration of the larynx and quantify the vibration phase as well as the vibration amplitude of the laryngeal tissue. Ultrasonic images were obtained at 5000 to 10,000 frames/s in the coronal plane at the level of the glottis. Although the image quality degraded when the imaging mode was switched from conventional ultrasonography to ultrafast plane wave ultrasonography, certain anatomic structures such as the vocal folds, as well as the sub- and supraglottic structures, including the false vocal folds, can be identi

Electroglottographic evaluation of gender and vowel effects during modal and vocal fry phonation.

Two unique characteristics of vocal fry register are the occurrence of multiple opening and closing phases occurring within one vibratory cycle and a similar vocal fundamental frequency (F0) between women and men. The present study tested the hypothesis that significant differences in glottal cycle symmetry exist between women and men during modal phonation, with no significant differences during vocal fry phonation. Consistent with previous studies of modal phonation, it was also hypothesized that a vowel effect would be apparent during vocal fry phonation. Five women and 5 men sustained moda

Perceptual and Computational Estimates of Vocal Breathiness and Roughness in Sustained Phonation and Connected Speech.

OBJECTIVE: Clinical assessment of voice quality (VQ) often uses a combination of sustained phonations and more prolonged and more complex vocalizations. The purpose of this study was to compare the perceived vocal breathiness and vocal roughness of sustained phonations and connected speech over a wide range of dysphonia severity and to evaluate their relationship with acoustic measures and bioinspired models of breathiness and roughness. METHODS: VQ dimension-specific single-variable matching task (SVMT) was used to index the perceived breathiness or roughness of five male and five female tal
