Archean phosphorus recycling facilitated by ultraviolet radiation.

Of the six elements incorporated into the major polymers of life, phosphorus is the least abundant on a global scale [E. Anders, M. Ebihara, Geochim. Cosmochim. Acta 46, 2363-2380 (1982)] and has been described as the "ultimate limiting nutrient" [T. Tyrrell, Nature 400, 525-531 (1999)]. In the modern ocean, the supply of dissolved phosphorus is predominantly sustained by the oxidative remineralization/recycling of organic phosphorus in seawater. However, in the Archean Eon (4 to 2.5 Ga), surface waters were anoxic and reducing. Here, we conducted photochemical experiments to test whether phot

Phosphorus additions imbalance terrestrial ecosystem C:N:P stoichiometry.

Carbon (C):nitrogen (N):phosphorus (P) stoichiometry in plants, soils, and microbial biomass influences productivity and nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Anthropogenic inputs of P to ecosystems are increasing; however, our understanding of the impacts of P addition on terrestrial ecosystem C:N:P ratios remains elusive. By conducting a meta-analysis with 1413 paired observations from 121 publications, we showed that P addition significantly decreased plant, soil, and microbial biomass N:P and C:P ratios, but had negligible effects on C:N ratios. The reductions in N:P and C:P ratios b

Using sediment resuspension to immobilize sedimentary phosphorus.

The response of the transformation of internal phosphorus (P) to resuspended sediment was investigated in the sediment-water system under different disturbance intensity. The sediments and overlying water were collected from Taihu Lake, a typical shallow lake. The concentrations of particulate P (PP) and dissolved inorganic P (DIP) in the water phase and algal available P (AAP) and P fractions in the sediments and suspended particle characteristics were evaluated in laboratory-simulated experiments. The results show that dissolved oxygen (DO) in the overlying water increased continuously and p

Transition-Metal-Mediated Functionalization of White Phosphorus.

Recently there has been great interest in the reactivity of transition-metal (TM) centers towards white phosphorus (P4 ). This has ultimately been motivated by a desire to find TM-mediated alternatives to the current industrial routes used to transform P4 into myriad useful P-containing products, which are typically indirect, wasteful, and highly hazardous. Such a TM-mediated process can be divided into two steps: activation of P4 to generate a polyphosphorus complex TM-Pn , and subsequent functionalization of this complex to release the desired phosphorus-containing product. The former step h

Intestinal Phosphorus Absorption in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects approximately 10% of adults worldwide. Dysregulation of phosphorus homeostasis which occurs in CKD leads to development of CKD-Mineral Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD) and contributes to increased morbidity and mortality in these patients. Phosphorus is regulated by multiple hormones (parathyroid hormone (PTH), 1,25-dihyxdroxyvitamin D (1,25D), and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)) and tissues (kidney, intestine, parathyroid glands, and bone) to maintain homeostasis. In health, the kidneys are the major site of regulation for phosphorus homeostasis. However, as k

Phosphorus Recovery by Methods Beyond Struvite Precipitation.

Unintentional phosphate precipitation at water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs) causes operation and maintenance challenges. With global phosphorus (P) scarcity looming and receiving water eutrophication caused by excess discharges of P, intentional P recovery at WRRFs has been gaining traction. To date, struvite recovery as slow release fertilizer has been the focus of P recovery. However, struvite recovery is not always the most cost-effective approach, especially when phosphate fertilizers cost considerably less than the cost to recover struvite as fertilizer. The aim of this state-of-a

Unconventional Clathrates with Transition Metal-Phosphorus Frameworks.

In this Account, we focused on a unique class of inclusion compounds, intermetallic clathrates, which exist in a variety of structures and exhibit diverse physical properties. These compounds combine covalent tetrahedral frameworks with rattling guest atoms situated inside their framework cages. Tetrels, the group 14 elements, are the basis for conventional clathrates because they fulfill the bonding requirement of four electrons per framework atom. In analogy to the replacement of Ge with GaAs in semiconductors, we focused on unconventional tetrel-free clathrates with frameworks composed of p

P-chiral phosphorus heterocycles: a straightforward synthesis.

A straightforward synthesis of P-chiral polycyclic 7-phospha-norbornenes via an asymmetric Diels-Alder reaction is presented. The employed starting materials are cheap, easily accessible and of structural diversity facilitating a new flexible route towards differently functionalised P-chiral phosphanes.

Phosphorus recovery from wastewater through microbial processes.

Waste streams offer a compelling opportunity to recover phosphorus (P). 15-20% of world demand for phosphate rock could theoretically be satisfied by recovering phosphorus from domestic waste streams alone. For very dilute streams (<10 mg PL(-1)), including domestic wastewater, it is necessary to concentrate phosphorus in order to make recovery and reuse feasible. This review discusses enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) as a key technology to achieve this. EBPR relies on polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs) to take up phosphorus from waste streams, so concentrating phosphorus

[Information about phosphorus additives and nutritional counseling].

Hyperphosphatemia is a common disorder in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) , and may result in hyperparathyroidism and renal osteodystrophy. Hyperphosphatemia also may contribute to deterioration vascular calcification and increase mortality. Hence, correction and prevention of hyperphosphatemia is a main component of the management of CKD. This goal is usually approached both by administering phosphorus binders and by restricting dietary phosphorus (P) intake. Dietary intake of phosphorus (P) is derived largely from foods with high protein content or food additives and is an importa

Fibroblast growth factor-23 and phosphorus metabolism.

The understanding of phosphorus metabolism has expanded considerably over the last decade. Recent studies have identified a novel bone-kidney endocrine axis that maintains phosphate homeostasis. When phosphate is in excess, FGF-23 is secreted from bone and acts on the kidney to promote phosphate excretion into urine and to suppress vitamin D synthesis, thereby inducing negative phosphate balance. This review summarizes the role of the FGF-23 axis on phosphorus metabolism, and presents the clinical entities that arise from activation or inactivation of the FGF-23 axis.

Energy and phosphorus recovery from black water.

Source-separated black water (BW) (toilet water) containing 38% of the organic material and 68% of the phosphorus in the total household waste (water) stream including kitchen waste, is a potential source for energy and phosphorus recovery. The energy recovered, in the form of electricity and heat, is more than sufficient for anaerobic treatment, nitrogen removal and phosphorus recovery. The phosphorus balance of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor treating concentrated BW showed a phosphorus conservation of 61% in the anaerobic effluent. Precipitation of phosphate as struvite from this

Reducing phosphorus inputs for grazing Holstein steers.

A 2-yr study was conducted to confirm that managed pastures can provide Holstein steers adequate P to meet their daily requirement. Treatments offered were trace mineralized salt with or without additional P. In the first year, 80 Holstein steers (248 kg of BW) were assigned to 4 grazing groups. Treatments were trace mineralized salt only or a 67:33 mixture of trace mineralized salt and dicalcium phosphate. Steers rotationally grazed a cool-season grass/legume mixture for 137 d. Fecal bags were placed on 3 steers from each grazing group (n = 12) over a 4-d period for estimation of forage DMI a

Is phosphorus recovery from waste water feasible?

Phosphorus (P) recovery from waste water must become a predominant goal of all countries to face the limited resources of this essential nutrient. The induced crystallisation of calcium phosphates straight from the waste water phase applying tobermorite-rich calcium silicate hydrate compounds (CSH) from the construction industry as the trigger material has proved to be a suitable method. Laboratory and semi-technical scale experiments were carried out in fixed bed, stirred reactor and expanded bed mode. P-loads of the crystallisation substrates of up to 13 wt-% total P (P-tot) (30 wt-% P2O5) w

Bidentate phosphorus baskets by intramolecular phosphinidene addition.

Intramolecular phosphinidene addition to the C==C bond of Mo-complexed, seven-membered phosphorus heterocycles affords three novel [(diphos)Mo(CO)(4)] complexes (18-20). The three bidentate phosphorus baskets differ in the composition of the seven-membered ring: one of the phosphorus atoms is flanked by CH(2), NCH(3), or O. The unsaturated tetrahydrophosphepine precursors are synthesized by either ring-closing metathesis (C and N derivatives) or by a cyclization sequence (O derivative). The crystal structures of the nitrogen- (19) and oxygen-containing (20) baskets have relatively small P-Mo-P

Acute yellow phosphorus poisoning from pesticide pastes.

Ten cases of ingestion of yellow phosphorus rat poison, including four cases that occurred during the past 3 years, are reported. Comparison of these cases with 82 others from the literature showed that ingestion of yellow phosphorus paste often results in clinical findings that are different from those described for acute yellow phosphorus poisoning in current toxicology texts. The time lag between swallowing of the poison and onset of symptoms varied from a few minutes to 24 h. Garlic odor, mucosal burns, and phosphorescent vomitus or feces occurred in only a small percentage of cases. Diarr

Apparent digestibility and calcium and phosphorus in urine after feeding different combinations of calcium and phosphorus sources to adult dogs.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of the combination of a water-soluble calcium (Ca) source (CaCl2) with a water-soluble phosphorus (P) source (NaH2PO4*2H2O, diet soluble, SOL) in comparison to a water-insoluble P source (CaHPO4*2H2O, diet insoluble, INS) on apparent digestibility and renal excretion of Ca and P in dogs. The Ca intake was 226 mg/kg bodyweight (bw), the Ca/P ratio 1.9/1 in SOL and 2.0/1 in INS. The percentage of Ca from CaCl2 was 60% in SOL and 33% in INS. Eight adult Foxhound-crossbred dogs FBI, (3-5 years, bw 24-32 kg) were available. Standard digestion trials

Connecting sources, fractions and algal availability of sediment phosphorus in shallow lakes: An approach to the criteria for sediment phosphorus concentrations.

Although point and nonpoint sources contribute roughly equal nutrient loads to lakes, their relative role in supporting algae growth has not been clarified. In this research, we have established a quantitative relationship between algae-available phosphorus (P) and P chemical fractions in sediments; the latter indicates the relative contribution of point versus nonpoint sources. Surface sediments from three large shallow lakes in eastern China, namely, the Chaohu, Taihu and Hongzehu Lakes, were sampled to assess their algae-available P and chemically extracted P fractions. The algae-available
