INTRODUCTION: In France, a systematic EEG is performed during initial examination in military aircrew applicants, which may provide an estimation of the prevalence of benign epileptiform variants in healthy adults.
METHODS: We analyzed standard EEG (21 scalp electrodes, 20minutes, 400Hz sampling rate) of military aircrew applicants examined in the French Main Aeromedical Center in 2016. EEGs were analyzed using both bipolar and referential montages. The collected data were EEG abnormalities and benign epileptiform variants. The kappa inter-observer index for the detection of benign epileptifo

Rapid object recognition has survival significance. The extraction of topological properties (TP) is proposed as the starting point of object perception. Behavioral evidence shows that TP processing takes precedence over other geometric properties and can accelerate object recognition. However, the mechanism of the fast TP processing remains unclear. The magnocellular (M) pathway is well known as a fast route to convey "coarse" information, compared with the slow parvocellular (P) pathway. Here, we hypothesize that the fast processing of TP occurs in a subcortical M pathway. We applied single-

Intermittent exposure to a sensorimotor perturbation, such as a visuomotor rotation, is known to cause a directional bias on the subsequent movement that opposes the previously experienced perturbation. To date, it is unclear whether the parietal cortex is causally involved in this postperturbation movement bias. In a recent electroencephalogram study, Savoie et al. (2018) observed increased parietal activity in response to an intermittent visuomotor perturbation, raising the possibility that the parietal cortex could subserve this change in motor behavior. The goal of the present study was to

Two experiments investigated the role of distractor characteristics and type of object-directed attention on infants' distraction latencies during object exploration. In Experiment 1, 7- and 10-month-old infants' distraction latency was a function of both attention and the characteristics of the distractors. Infants took longer to turn toward distractors during focused object-directed attention than when engaged in more casual attention. In addition, their latencies were longer regardless of attention type when the distractors were unimodal (e.g., consisting of only a visual or an auditory com

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder associated with cognitive decline and significant global health burden. Current treatments offer limited benefits, highlighting the need for novel therapies. Gamma-frequency auditory and visual stimulation (GFAVS), utilizing 40 Hz neuromodulation, has gained attention as a non-invasive treatment for cognitive deficits and underlying pathophysiology in AD.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of GFAVS in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD) and mild cognitive imp

It is well known that the nervous system adjusts itself to its environment during development. Although a great deal of effort has been directed towards understanding the developmental processes of the individual sensory systems (e.g., vision, hearing, etc.), only one major study has examined the maturation of multisensory processing in cortical neurons. Therefore, the present investigation sought to evaluate multisensory development in a different cortical region and species. Using multiple single-unit recordings in anaesthetised ferrets (n = 18) of different ages (from postnatal day 80 to 30

Phosphene is the experience of light without natural visual stimulation. It can be induced by electrical stimulation of the retina, optic nerve or cortex. Induction of phosphenes can be potentially used in assistive devices for the blind. Analysis of phosphene might be beneficial for practical reasons such as adjustment of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) frequency and intensity to eliminate phosphene perception (e.g., tACS studies using verum tACS group and sham group) or, on the contrary, to maximize perception of phosphenes in order to be more able to study their dynamics

Animals actively sample their environment through orienting actions such as saccadic eye movements. Saccadic targets are selected based both on sensory evidence immediately preceding the saccade, and a "salience map" or prior built-up over multiple saccades. In the primate cortex, the selection of each individual saccade depends on competition between target-selective cells that ramp up their firing rate to saccade release. However, it is less clear how a cross-saccade prior might be implemented, either in neural firing or through an activity-silent mechanism such as modification of synaptic w

Sunflower syndrome is a rare photosensitive epilepsy which has received little attention in recent medical literature. The historical cases documenting the epilepsy's stereotyped handwaving motion in front of light characterized the behavior as self-inducing seizures via mimic of stroboscopic effect. However, the relationship between handwaving episodes and attendant generalized electroencephalogram abnormalities, and an appreciation of the compulsive attraction the sun and other light sources hold for these patients, suggest the handwaving motion may be a part of the seizure rather than a mec

A reference frame is required to specify how motion is perceived. For example, the motion of part of an object is usually perceived relative to the motion of the object itself. Johansson (Psychological Research, 38, 379-393, 1976) proposed that the perceptual system carries out a vector decomposition, which rewsults in common and relative motion percepts. Because vector decomposition is an ill-posed problem, several studies have introduced constraints by means of which the number of solutions can be substantially reduced. Here, we have adopted an alternative approach and studied how, rather th

Although the retinal position of objects changes with each saccadic eye movement, we perceive the visual world to be stable. How this visual stability or constancy arises is debated. Cancellation accounts propose that the retinal consequences of eye movements are compensated for by an equal-but-opposite eye movement signal. Assumption accounts propose that saccade-induced retinal displacements are ignored because we have a prior belief in a stable world. Saccadic suppression of displacement-the fact that small displacements of the visual targets during saccades go unnoticed-argues in favor of

Previous studies have reported that subjects affected with congenital stationary night blindness and myopia demonstrated some photopic (cone) abnormalities in their electroretinogram (ERG). By comparing the photopic ERG elicited with a threshold and a suprathreshold stimulus it was found that, at threshold, no significant differences were noted both in the peak time and in the amplitude of ERGs evoked from CSNB and normal subjects. However, a more powerful stimulus (16 times the threshold) yields a significant difference in the ERGs recorded from the two groups. ERGs recorded from CSNB patient

OBJECTIVE: Photosensitive epilepsy (PSE) is a reflex epilepsy, where abnormal electroencephalographic (EEG) responses are induced by photic stimulation. Photosensitivity is classified into four types based on the propagation of the brain's response to visual stimuli. Here, we aimed to describe the underlying dynamical mechanisms of PSE and different photosensitivity types.
METHODS: This retrospective study included healthy controls (HC), PSE patients, and non-PSE patients with epilepsy (PWE). All participants were stimulated with flickering white light (1-60 Hz) under 10-20 EEG monitoring.

The neuroplasticity potential is reduced with aging and impairs during neurodegenerative diseases and brain and visual system injuries. This limits the brain's capacity to repair the structure and dynamics of its activity after lesions. Maximization of neuroplasticity is necessary to provide the maximal CNS response to therapeutic intervention and adaptive reorganization of neuronal networks in patients with degenerative pathology and traumatic injury to restore the functional activity of the brain and retina.Considering the fractal geometry and dynamics of the healthy brain and the loss of fr

While substantial knowledge exists about the way the retina processes simple stimuli, our understanding of how the retina processes natural stimuli remains limited. Here we highlight key challenges that remain to be addressed to understand retinal processing of natural stimuli and describe emerging research avenues to overcome them. A key issue is model complexity. When complexifying the probing stimuli towards natural stimuli, the number of parameters required in models of retinal computations increases, raising issues of overfitting, generalization, and interpretability. This increase in com

Saccadic eye movements shift the fovea between objects of interest to build a visual percept. In humans, saccades are predominantly executed along the cardinal axes, particularly in the horizontal direction. It is unknown how this horizontal saccade bias could arise mechanistically, though previous work suggests contributions from neural, image-based, and ocular motor factors. Here we used two publicly available eye movement datasets to first investigate which image features-spatial frequency, saliency, and structural content-relate to the horizontal saccade bias. Among the three image feature

The electroretinogram (ERG) is an important assay for retinal physiology. This noninvasive recording can be used for basic and disease-related research. This chapter addresses ERGs, recorded in humans and nonhuman primates, for assessing retinal physiology and for clinical application. We will also describe ERG recordings in mice that are often used for studying basic retinal processes and for preclinical research. The basics of ERG recording techniques and experimental procedures will be discussed. A brief description of the standard full-field stimuli and their corresponding ERG responses is
