Impact of sexual and physical abuse on women's mental health.

The level of psychiatric symptomatology was assessed with the General Health Questionnaire and the Present State Examination in a random community sample of women. Subsequently it was ascertained which of the women had been the victims of sexual or physical abuse, in either childhood or adult life. Women with a history of being abused were significantly more likely to have raised scores on both measures of psychopathology and to be identified as psychiatric cases. 20% of women who had been exposed to sexual abuse as a child were identified as having psychiatric disorders, predominantly depress

Confessions in Cases of Child Physical Abuse-A CAPNET Study.

OBJECTIVE: Prior research on confessions of physical abuse (PA) has explored mechanisms of injury. Little is known about conditions supporting a confession of abuse or how confessions may influence case outcomes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study of suspected PA in children aged <10 years at 10 centers participating in CAPNET, a multicenter child PA research network, included children with in-person Child Abuse Pediatrics (CAP) consultations between February 2021 and December 2022 and excluded children without injury. Our focus was a confession of inflicted injury known to the CAP during cl

Clinical evaluation and management of children with suspected physical abuse.

Evaluating and managing children with suspected physical abuse is challenging. Few single injuries are pathognomonic for abuse and, as a result, child abuse is easily missed. As such, a healthy bit of skepticism is needed to recognize and protect abused children. The medical history and clinical presentation should guide evaluation. Medical providers must consider the differential diagnosis, epidemiology of injuries, and child development to inform the assessment. In this review, we address evidence-based recommendations to inform child physical abuse evaluations. We also discuss the role of m

Children's Disclosures of Physical Abuse in a Population-Based Sample.

Few studies have explored the disclosure of child physical abuse although child sexual abuse disclosure has been widely studied and debated for years. The present study explores the characteristics of child physical abuse disclosures and compares them to previously published findings on child sexual abuse disclosure from the same data. The data consist of a representative sample of 11,364 sixth and ninth graders. Participants responded to a wide variety of questions concerning experiences of violence, including child physical abuse and child sexual abuse, in the Finnish Child Victim Survey con

Characteristics of child physical and sexual abuse as predictors of psychopathology.

Childhood physical and sexual abuse victims are at increased risk for developing depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adulthood. Prior findings suggest abuse onset, duration, and severity moderate relationships between victimization and psychopathology. However, because these abuse characteristics are highly intercorrelated, their unique, individual effects on mental health outcomes remain unclear. To address this gap, the present study examined relationships between physical and sexual abuse characteristics and mental health outcomes and whether these relationship

History of physical abuse and periconceptional drinking in pregnant women.

This study examines the relationship between physical abuse and periconceptional drinking in women presenting to a mid-Atlantic, urban hospital-based OB/GYN clinic serving a largely indigent population between April 2003 and May 2004. During their first prenatal visit, 308 women completed a screening battery that included the Abuse Assessment Screen (AAS) and measures of alcohol use, including the CAGE, T-ACE, TWEAK, and the PRIME-MD Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). Bivariate analyses, including odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), revealed that women with a history of phys

Physical and sexual abuse in patients with overactive bladder: is there an association?

The known sequelae of sexual abuse include acute and chronic injury. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association of overactive bladder symptoms (OABs) with a history of physical or sexual abuse. Two hundred and forty-three women who attended the gynaecological out-patient clinic or the urogynaecological clinic were recruited for our study. Based on their clinical examination, they were assigned to three groups of patients with either OAB or with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) without concomitant urgency symptoms (SUI), or without history of incontinence (control group). Physically abused children's regulation of attention in response to hostility.

The present study examines the effects of early emotional experiences on children's regulation or strategic control of attention in the presence of interpersonal hostility. Abused children's reactions to the unfolding of a realistic interpersonal emotional situation were measured through multiple methods including autonomic nervous system changes and overt behavioral performance. Although physically abused and non-physically abused 4-year-old children did not differ in terms of their baseline levels of arousal, marked differences in physically abused children's regulatory responses to backgrou

Risk behaviors and resiliency within physically abused adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: This study examines the relationship between physical abuse and several risk behaviors, and thriving behaviors, and the relationship between potential protective factors and engagement in risk and thriving behaviors among victims of physical abuse. Three categories of potential protective factors were examined: (1) individual characteristics, (2) family processes, and (3) extra-familial factors. We expected that high levels of protective factors would reduce engagement in risk behaviors (i.e., alcohol use, tobacco use, drug use, sexual activity, antisocial behavior, attempted suicid

Child physical abuse: risk for psychopathology and efficacy of interventions.

The emerging research on child physical abuse (CPA) is reviewed herewith. Incidence of CPA may be as high as 11% for adolescents in the US. Child physical abuse survivors vary in their symptom picture of severity and type. Children who have been physically abused may experience symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, or disruptive behavior disorders. Additionally, developmental disturbances include problems with attachment, social skills, and affect regulation. Chronic abuse is associated with more severe psychopathology. Cognitive processing of the
