Sarcopenia and homocysteine: is there a possible association in the elderly? A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia (SA) is a progressive skeletal muscle disorder, associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes, including falls, fractures, physical disability and mortality. Several risks factors may contribute to the development of SA in the elderly; among them, nutrition plays a key role in muscle health. The elderly are at risk of inadequate intake in terms of micronutrients affecting muscle homeostasis, such as B vitamins, related to homocysteine (Hcy) metabolism. OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: This narrative review analysed the association between increased Hcy levels and SA, accord

Cardiac Rehabilitation for Adults With Congenital Heart Disease: Physical and Psychosocial Considerations.

Owing to significant medical advances, it is now estimated that more than 90% of persons born with congenital heart disease (CHD) will reach adulthood. Medically appropriate physical activity represents an opportunity to improve physical functioning as well as quality of life and psychosocial outcomes. By reviewing published CHD research and clinical recommendations, herein we first summarize how adults with CHD are known to be less physically active and have reduced exercise capacity compared with healthy peers. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing is important for routine clinical management and

The Effects of Sleep Loss on Military Physical Performance.

As part of both training and active service, military members can be exposed to prolonged periods of sleep loss. Given the extent of physical and cognitive performances viewed as critical to successful military performance, such sleep disruption may present risk to health and performance. The primary aim of this narrative review was to investigate evidence on the effect of inadequate sleep on measures of aerobic capacity, anaerobic capacity, muscular strength and muscular endurance in military personnel. Sleep loss appears to have the greatest negative impact on aerobic capacity, muscular endu

Five Years Later-The Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Physical Performance and Cardiometabolic Health Using a Smart Home Gym: An Ecological Case Study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been linked to numerous threats to public health. Of these, physical inactivity became increasingly prevalent, mainly due to the widespread closure of indoor gyms. Home-based exercise alternatives were created as potential solutions, but little research is available validating their efficacy to improve long-term health and fitness. This case study investigated the longitudinal effects of ≥three weekly exercise sessions with a smart home-based fitness platform on anthropometric, fitness, and cardiometabolic measures. Three participants were annually assessed over a fiv

The role of physical performance measures in the physiotherapy assessment and management of older adults with osteoporotic vertebral fractures: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporotic vertebral fractures (OVFs) are the most common type of major osteoporotic fracture and can result in significant morbidity, reduced survival, and economic burden. Exercise is a key management strategy for osteoporosis, but it must be appropriately tailored by physiotherapists considering previous fractures and co-morbidities following evidence-based assessments. Limited guidance exists for selecting appropriate physical performance measures (PPMs) for OVFs. The purpose of this narrative review was to determine the role of PPMs in the physiotherapy assessment and manage

Relationships between functional performance, body composition, and biochemical markers of inflammation in young men who play team sports.

Movement quality and postural control are crucial for performance and injury prevention in team-sport athletes. Although FMS and YBT are commonly used, their ability to predict injury risk is limited when used alone. Therefore, integrating functional assessment with body composition and biochemical markers may provide a more comprehensive evaluation of athletes' functional status. The study aimed to investigate the relationships among functional performance, body composition, and chosen biochemical markers in young men's team-sport athletes. The study included 48 young Polish professional athl

Hydrotherapy in the Rehabilitation of Functional Performance and Gait in Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Background and Objectives: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative joint disease that affects quality of life through pain, impaired functional performance, and altered gait patterns. Hydrotherapy is a well-tolerated form of physical rehabilitation, especially suitable for patients with severe pain, as water's properties support movement while reducing joint load. Its effects have been widely studied, primarily focusing on patient-reported outcomes, with limited synthesis of functional performance and gait-related outcomes. Materials and Methods: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed
