Radiation Physics and Safety in Fluoroscopy: A Clinician's Guide to Principles and Practice.

Fluoroscopic venography serves as a pivotal diagnostic and interventional modality in the assessment and management of venous disorders, including deep vein thrombosis, venous occlusion or malformations, and stent placement. The technique's real-time imaging capabilities facilitate precise visualization of venous anatomy and pathology, thereby guiding therapeutic interventions. However, the utilization of ionizing radiation inherent in fluoroscopy introduces potential risks to both patients and healthcare personnel. These risks encompass deterministic effects, such as skin erythema and catarac

Flavored circular collider: cornering New Physics at FCC-ee via flavor-changing processes.

OBJECTIVES: The most important renal complication of systemic sclerosis (SSc) is scleroderma renal crisis (SRC). Many patients demonstrate less severe renal complications, most likely associated with reduced renal blood flow and a consequent reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR). The mechanism of this slowly progressive form of chronic renal disease is unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate GFR by the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) and the 7-variable Modification of Diet and Renal Disease (MDRD) equations in SSc patients and to correlate estimated G

Enhancing Surgical Precision in Autonomous Robotic Incisions via Physics-Based Tissue Cutting Simulation.

In soft tissue surgeries, such as tumor resections, achieving precision is of utmost importance. Surgeons conventionally achieve this precision through intraoperative adjustments to the cutting plan, responding to deformations from tool-tissue interactions. This study examines the integration of physics-based tissue cutting simulations into autonomous robotic surgery to preoperatively predict and compensate for such deformations, aiming to improve surgical precision and reduce the necessity for dynamic adjustments during autonomous surgeries. This study adapts a real-to-sim-to-real workflow. I

Polymers in Physics, Chemistry and Biology: Behavior of Linear Polymers in Fractal Structures.

We start presenting an overview on recent applications of linear polymers and networks in condensed matter physics, chemistry and biology by briefly discussing selected papers (published within 2022-2024) in some detail. They are organized into three main subsections: polymers in physics (further subdivided into simulations of coarse-grained models and structural properties of materials), chemistry (quantum mechanical calculations, environmental issues and rheological properties of viscoelastic composites) and biology (macromolecules, proteins and biomedical applications). The core of the work

Predicting 3D soft tissue dynamics from 2D imaging using physics informed neural networks.

Tissue dynamics play critical roles in many physiological functions and provide important metrics for clinical diagnosis. Capturing real-time high-resolution 3D images of tissue dynamics, however, remains a challenge. This study presents a hybrid physics-informed neural network algorithm that infers 3D flow-induced tissue dynamics and other physical quantities from sparse 2D images. The algorithm combines a recurrent neural network model of soft tissue with a differentiable fluid solver, leveraging prior knowledge in solid mechanics to project the governing equation on a discrete eigen space.

A generic physics-informed neural network-based constitutive model for soft biological tissues.

Constitutive modeling is a cornerstone for stress analysis of mechanical behaviors of biological soft tissues. Recently, it has been shown that machine learning (ML) techniques, trained by supervised learning, are powerful in building a direct linkage between input and output, which can be the strain and stress relation in constitutive modeling. In this study, we developed a novel generic physics-informed neural network material (NNMat) model which employs a hierarchical learning strategy by following the steps: (1) establishing constitutive laws to describe general characteristic behaviors of

Personalized Perioperative Multi-scale, Multi-physics Heart Simulation of Double Outlet Right Ventricle.

For treatment of complex congenital heart disease, computer simulation using a three-dimensional heart model may help to improve outcomes by enabling detailed preoperative evaluations. However, no highly integrated model that accurately reproduces a patient's pathophysiology, which is required for this simulation has been reported. We modelled a case of complex congenital heart disease, double outlet right ventricle with ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect. From preoperative computed tomography images, finite element meshes of the heart and torso were created, and cell model of

Medical physics 3.0 versus 1.0: A case study in digital radiography quality control.

PURPOSE: The study illustrates how a renewed approach to medical physics, Medical Physics 3.0 (MP3.0), can identify performance decrement of digital radiography (DR) systems when conventional Medical Physics 1.0 (MP1.0) methods fail. METHODS: MP1.0 tests included traditional annual tests plus the manufacturer's automated Quality Assurance Procedures (QAP) of a DR system before and after a radiologist's image quality (IQ) complaint repeated after service intervention. Further analysis was conducted using nontraditional MP3.0 tests including longitudinal review of QAP results from a 15-yr datab

Topographic distribution of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis: a hybrid physics- and agent-based model.

OBJECTIVE: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and fatal disease characterized by excessive deposition of collagen and associated stiffening of lung tissue. While it is known that inflammation and dysfunction of fibroblasts are involved in disease development, it remains poorly understood how cells and their microenvironment interact to produce a characteristic subpleural pattern of high and low tissue density variations, called honeycombing, on CT images of patients with IPF. Since the pleura is stiffer than the parenchyma, we hypothesized that local stiffness of the underlyi

Multi-scale and multi-physics model of the uterine smooth muscle with mechanotransduction.

Preterm labor is an important public health problem. However, the efficiency of the uterine muscle during labor is complex and still poorly understood. This work is a first step towards a model of the uterine muscle, including its electrical and mechanical components, to reach a better understanding of the uterus synchronization. This model is proposed to investigate, by simulation, the possible role of mechanotransduction for the global synchronization of the uterus. The electrical diffusion indeed explains the local propagation of contractile activity, while the tissue stretching may play a

Medical Physics Residency Consortium: collaborative endeavors to meet the ABR 2014 certification requirements.

In 2009, Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center (MBPCC) established a Radiation Oncology Physics Residency Program to provide opportunities for medical physics residency training to MS and PhD graduates of the CAMPEP-accredited Louisiana State University (LSU)-MBPCC Medical Physics Graduate Program. The LSU-MBPCC Program graduates approximately six students yearly, which equates to a need for up to twelve residency positions in a two-year program. To address this need for residency positions, MBPCC has expanded its Program by developing a Consortium consisting of partnerships with medical physics gro

Black hole physics. Black hole lightning due to particle acceleration at subhorizon scales.

Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes, revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min. Causality constrains the size

Physics-guided framework for climate dependent disease prediction: coupling compartment model with deep learning.

BACKGROUND: Influenza-like illness (ILI) serves as a representative climate dependent disease due to its climate sensitivity, widespread transmission, and significant impact on public health and societal functioning, highlighting the urgent need for reliable ILI prediction techniques that combine climate factors to support effective prevention and intervention. Existing compartmental model-based methods have limited ability to incorporate climate data and often struggle to capture the complex ILI transmission patterns. Many deep learning models generally lack interpretability and tend to overl

Physics-informed neural operators for the in situ characterization of locally reacting sound absorbersa).

Accurate knowledge of acoustic surface admittance or impedance is essential for reliable wave-based simulations, yet its in situ estimation remains challenging due to noise, model inaccuracies, and restrictive assumptions of conventional methods. This work presents a physics-informed neural operator approach for estimating frequency-dependent surface admittance directly from near-field measurements of sound pressure and particle velocity. A deep operator network is employed to learn the mapping from measurement data, spatial coordinates, and frequency to acoustic field quantities, while simult

MetalloDock: Decoding Metalloprotein-Ligand Interactions via Physics-Aware Deep Learning for Metalloprotein Drug Discovery.

Accurate prediction of metalloprotein-ligand interactions is critical for metalloprotein-targeted drug discovery. Conventional docking tools and existing deep learning (DL) models fail to reliably capture metal-ligand interactions, hampering the discovery of potent metalloprotein inhibitors. Here, we propose MetalloDock, the first DL-based docking framework specially designed for metalloprotein targets. By innovatively integrating an autoregressive spatial decoding engine with a physics-constrained geometric generation paradigm, MetalloDock can precisely reconstruct metal coordination geometri

Physics-Informed Reconstruction of Transmural Myocardial Deformation from 3D Echocardiography: Validation Against Cardiac MRI.

PURPOSE: Quantitative assessment of myocardial deformation is increasingly important in clinical cardiology, yet conventional two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography and standard three-dimensional (3D) approaches remain limited by out-of-plane motion and incomplete characterization of transmural mechanics. To address these limitations, we introduce a physics-informed framework for 3D echocardiography that reconstructs the full finite strain tensor across the entire myocardial wall. As an initial methodological study, we demonstrate the framework and validate it against cardiac magnetic resonance

Dynamically Tunable Exciton-Photon Coupling via Multi-Physics Field in Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Microcavities.

Atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) host tightly bound excitons with large oscillator strengths, making them ideal for studying light-matter interactions and polaritonic devices. When integrated with optical microcavities, TMD monolayers and van der Waals heterostructures enable engineering of the local density of optical states (LDOS), giving rise to Purcell-enhanced emission in the weak coupling regime and exciton-polaritons in the strong coupling regime. Practical polariton devices require dynamic, reversible control of exciton-photon detuning and coupling strength, as t

Scalable and Physics-Informed Multireference Implementation with Spin-Orbit Couplings via Modern HPC Clusters.

In this Letter, we introduce a scalable and physics-informed (PI) computational implementation for determinant-based multireference (MR) calculations. The PI philosophy is deeply embedded throughout the methodology and its implementation. At the method level, the orbital entanglement is used to guide an optimized reconstruction of selected CI wave functions, while the MR stage employs a PI kernel optimization (PIKO) strategy that explicitly accounts for configuration grouping patterns and memory access irregularities of integrals. In system hardware codesign, the PI parallel optimization (PIPO
