The aim of this follow-up study was to evaluate the functional and subjective results after thumb replantation. Twenty-four patients with replantation of the thumb, performed during the period 1992-1997, were reexamined after 6.5 years (range, 4.2-9.1 years post-injury). In 10 cases the amputations were isolated, 14 amputations were combined with other injuries of the hand, 15 amputations resulted from crush/avulsion injuries, and 9 amputations were sharp. Range of motion, grip strength, cutaneous sensibility, and upper-extremity functioning using the DASH questionnaire were determined. A corr

[Purpose] Patients with hematologic malignancies frequently experience hand function decline due to disease progression and adverse effects of chemotherapy and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Given the critical importance of daily hand function, effective rehabilitation strategies are essential. This study evaluated the feasibility and safety of a novel knitted hand function enhancement glove designed for routine use. [Participants and Methods] Six hospitalized patients undergoing chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation voluntarily participated by wearing gloves and recording wear

The role of in situ decompression in patients with severe ulnar nerve compression is still controversial. Thirty patients with severe ulnar nerve compression confirmed clinically and electrophysiologically underwent simple decompression. The mean age of the patients was 58 (range 26-87) years. Through incisions ≤4 cm the nerves were fully visualized and decompressed. Outcome was measured prospectively using Modified Bishop's score (BS), grip and pinch strengths and two-point discrimination (2PD). Significant improvement in power (p = 0.01) and pinch grip (p = 0.001) was noted at 1 year. The gr

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Osteoarthritis of the thumb's basal joint is a frequent and, in some cases, very painful condition that usually affects middle-aged and elderly women. Several surgical procedures have been proposed for severe carpometacarpal (CMC) joint arthritis; of these, joint replacement has proved to be an effective approach to its treatment. The aim of this study is to present the outcomes of the total non-cemented trapeziometacarpal implant Maďa in the treatment of more advanced stages of this disease.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six total trapeziometacarpal joint replacements in

Records were analysed from the institutional database, including 943 patients (1089 hands) with CTS who were operated on in the authors' department over a period of four years (2012 to 2015). The diagnosis of CTS was made solely on the basis of clinical findings in 551 patients (58 %); 392 patients (42 %) also had electrodiagnostic tests performed, for various reasons. Patients were followed-up at 1 and 6 months with assessments that included the Levine scores, filament tests, grip and pinch strength. No significant differences in Levine scores were found at the 1 and 6 month assessments. Stat

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the determinants of hand strength in patients with hand osteoarthritis (OA).
METHOD: Pinch and cylinder grip strength were measured in 527 patients with hand OA diagnosed by their treating rheumatologist from the Hand OSTeoArthritis in Secondary care (HOSTAS) study. Radiographs of hands (22 joints) were scored 0-3 (scaphotrapeziotrapezoid and first interphalangeal joints 0-1) on osteophytes and joint space narrowing following the Osteoarthritis Research Society International atlas. The first carpometacarpal joint (CMC1) was scored 0-1 for subluxation. Pain was assess

INTRODUCTION: Traditional single-stage tendon transfer procedures in patients with tetraplegia are designed to restore active pinch and grasp function. However, digital extension is usually achieved by wrist tenodesis. More recently, nerve transfer has allowed potential restoration of digital extension. This matched observational pilot study compares clinical outcomes after traditional tendon transfers vs. a study group using two-stage using combined nerve and tendon transfer.
METHODS: Eighteen patients in the traditional tendon transfer control group and 18 patients in the combined nerve and

During the 10 year interval 1979-1989, 20 patients underwent nerve grafting of a radial nerve lesion, 13 high radial and 7 posterior interosseous. Average follow-up was 38 months (range 12 months-10 years). Overall 72% of patients achieved a Highet Scale rating of M3 or better function and 44% M4 or better recovery. Age of the patient and length of the nerve graft did not seem to influence outcome. Time from initial injury to nerve grafting did affect outcome, with 85% of patients grafted within 6 months obtaining M3 or better recovery. No patient grafted 12 months after injury recovered any u

BACKGROUND: Despite satisfactory mid-term and long-term outcomes of trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) procedures for thumb carpometacarpal osteoarthritis, there is limited literature describing detailed chronological changes in early-phase postoperative outcomes. We investigated chronological changes of subjective, objective, and radiological outcomes within 1 year post-trapeziectomy with LRTI using a longitudinal evaluation and analyzed clinical factors associated with patient-reported subjective outcomes.

We have assessed the reliability of hand-held myometry in 33 patients with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), testing elbow flexion, handgrip, three-point pinch, knee flexion, knee extension, and foot dorsiflexion, and determining intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Interrater reliability was high for upper limbs, with an ICC of 0.92 for three-point pinch and 0.98 for elbow flexion and grip. For lower limbs interrater reliability was good with ICC >0.85 for all measures except foot dorsiflexion. Test-retest results were excellent with ICC >0.91 in all instances. Hand-held myometry is easily

Amputation of the thumb, including the basal joint, is a disabling injury that leaves limited reconstructive options. Three cases of multiple digit amputation including the thumb and basal joint are presented in which a second toe transfer was used to reconstruct the thumb. All patients have functional pinch with an average pinch strength of 27% of the opposite uninjured extremity. The average grip strength for two patients is 44% of the opposite hand. Average motion of the transfer at the MP, PIP, and DIP is 25 degrees, 37 degrees, and 9 degrees, respectively. Adduction and abduction are obta
