Plant height is a key agronomic trait that affects yield and is controlled by both phytohormone gibberellin (GA) and ultraviolet-B (UV-B) irradiation. However, whether and how plant height is modulated by UV-B-mediated changes in GA metabolism are not well understood. It has not been reported that the E3 ubiquitin ligase Anaphase Promoting Complex/Cyclosome (APC/C) is involved in the regulation of plant growth in response to environmental factors. We perform a forward genetic screen in soybean and find that a mutation in Glycine max Increased Leaf Petiole Angle1 (GmILPA1), encoding a subunit o

Traditional breeding for high-yielding crops has mainly relied on the widespread cultivation of gibberellin (GA)-deficient semi-dwarf varieties, as dwarfism increases lodging resistance and allows for high nitrogen use, resulting in high grain yield. Although the adoption of semi-dwarf varieties in rice and wheat breeding brought big success to the 'Green Revolution' in the 20th century, it consequently increased the demand for nitrogen-based fertilizer, which causes severe threat to ecosystems and sustainable agriculture. To make the 'Green Revolution' truly green, it is necessary to develop

Manganese efficiency is a quantitative abiotic stress trait controlled by several genes each with a small effect. Manganese deficiency leads to yield reduction in winter barley ( L.). Breeding new cultivars for this trait remains difficult because of the lack of visual symptoms and the polygenic features of the trait. Hence, Mn efficiency is a potential suitable trait for a genomic selection (GS) approach. A collection of 248 winter barley varieties was screened for Mn efficiency using Chlorophyll (Chl ) fluorescence in six environments prone to induce Mn deficiency. Two models for genomic pre

Crop translational genomics applies breeding techniques based on genomic datasets to improve crops. Technological breakthroughs in the past ten years have made it possible to sequence the genomes of increasing numbers of crop varieties and have assisted in the genetic dissection of crop performance. However, translating research findings to breeding applications remains challenging. Here we review recent progress and future prospects for crop translational genomics in bringing results from the laboratory to the field. Genetic mapping, genomic selection and sequence-assisted characterization an

As developed by Shen et al., multiple fungal pathogen detection (MFPD) enables screening of partial and full-length ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) datasets for reported fungal pathogens. Linking pathogen detection with crop-context interpretation can help plant science move beyond community profiling towards decision support for biovigilance, disease phenotyping, and resistance breeding.

Speed breeding (SB) accelerates generation turnover, but the small seed quantities produced during rapid generation advance remain a bottleneck. Here, we quantify intensive off-season seed multiplication as a scale-up stage of the SB pipeline. Using spring barley, we tested two lighting systems, high-pressure sodium (HP S) and light-emitting diode (LED), and two cultivars at three pot configurations in Moscow (55.75°N) over winter at 24°C and a 22-h photoperiod. Fertile tillers reached 31-105 per plant, and the mean seed number ranged from 553 to 1,562 per plant, giving a seed multiplication r

Embryo culture techniques have many significant applications in plant breeding, as well as basic studies in physiology and biochemistry. Immature embryo rescue and culture is a particularly attractive technique for recovering plants from sexual crosses where the majority of embryos cannot survive in vivo or become dormant for long periods of time. Overcoming embryo inviability is the most common reason for the application of embryo rescue techniques. Recently, fruit breeding programs have greatly increased the interest in exploiting interploid hybridization to combine desirable genetic traits

Optimal plant height is critical for yield performance and lodging resistance in rice (Oryza sativa L.). However, genetic resources available for optimizing yield and lodging resistance in breeding programs are currently limited. Here, we report the identification of semi-dwarf rice 1 (SDR1), a semi-dwarf gene encoding a RING-H2 type E3 ubiquitin ligase preferentially expressed in stem internodes. Mechanistically, SDR1 directly targets the key gibberellin (GA)-deactivating enzyme ELONGATED UPPERMOST INTERNODE 1 (EUI1) for degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS), thereby fine-tuni

'Hidden hunger' involves insufficient intake of micronutrients and is estimated to affect over two billion people on a global scale. Malnutrition of vitamins and minerals is known to cause an alarming number of casualties, even in the developed world. Many staple crops, although serving as the main dietary component for large population groups, deliver inadequate amounts of micronutrients. Biofortification, the augmentation of natural micronutrient levels in crop products through breeding or genetic engineering, is a pivotal tool in the fight against micronutrient malnutrition (MNM). Although

Various cool-season grasses are infected by Epichloë endophyte, and this symbiotic relationship is always of benefit to the host grass due to an increased resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. Fungal diseases adversely affect the yield, quality, and economic benefits of rangelands, which affects the production of animal husbandry. Therefore, it is imperative to breed resistant cultivars and to better understand the role of fungal endophytes in order to protect grasses against pathogens. The present review introduces research regarding how these endophytes affect the growth of pathogens in

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is one of the most important staple crops worldwide, and improving grain yield remains a major objective of rice breeding programs. Yield is a complex quantitative trait influenced by multiple agronomic characteristics, including grain yield per plant (GY), seed setting rate (SSR), plant height (PH), and thousand grain weight (TGW). In this study, a natural population comprising 265 rice accessions was evaluated during two consecutive growing seasons (2022-2023) at one field location, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) conducted using 4454137 high-quality single

Gossypiumbarbadense is a cultivated cotton species and possesses many desirable traits, including high fiber quality and resistance to pathogens, especially Verticilliumdahliae (a devastating pathogen of Gossypium hirsutum, the main cultivated species). These elite traits are difficult to be introduced into G. hirsutum through classical breeding methods. In addition, genetic transformation of G. barbadense has not been successfully performed. It is therefore important to develop methods for evaluating the function and molecular mechanism of genes in G. barbadense. In this study, we had success

Plant height is an important agronomic characteristic that influences crop productivity and overall plant structure. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying stem elongation in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is essential for advancing crop improvement. In this study, we identified a semi-dwarf eggplant mutant, eggplant dwarf4 (edf4), generated through Ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutagenesis. Genetic mapping and functional analyses revealed that a point mutation in SmCycC, which encodes a homolog of Cyclin C, is responsible for the dwarf phenotype. The edf4 mutant exhibited 28.67% (p <

Nucleotide Binding Site - Leucine Rich Repeat (NBS-LRR) genes play a significant role in plant defense against biotic stresses and are an integral part of signal transduction pathways. Vat gene has been well reported for their role in resistance to Aphis gossypii and viruses transmitted by them. Despite their importance, Vat like NBS-LRR resistance genes have not yet been identified and studied in cotton species. This study report hundreds of orthologous Vat like NBS-LRR genes from the genomes of 18 cotton species through homology searches and the distribution of those identified genes were te

Potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pose a great threat to ecosystems and long-term exposure causes adverse effects to wildlife and humans. Cadmium induces a variety of diseases including cancer, kidney dysfunction, bone lesions, anemia and hypertension. Here we review the ability of plants to accumulate cadmium from soil, air and water under different environmental conditions, focusing on absorption mechanisms and factors affecting these. Cadmium possess various transport mechanisms and pathways roughly divided into symplast and apoplast pathway. Excessive cadmium concentrations in the environm

(1) Background: Curcuma caesia Roxb. is a high valued crop which is extensively used in pharmaceuticals, flavour and fragrances. C. caesia is recognised as an endangered species due to its extensive collection from the wild through human intervention. Therefore, to prevent the species from extinction, it is very necessary to conserve and cultivate this plant species for the sustainable availability of the raw material. (2) Methods: In the present plant breeding programme, a multi-year study was performed for the identification of superior genotypes which will help in conservation. To fulfil th

Double-fertilization in angiosperms requires precise communication between the male gametophyte (pollen), the female tissues, and the associated female gametophyte (embryo sac) to facilitate efficient fertilization. Numerous small molecules, proteins, and peptides have been shown to impact double-fertilization through the disruption of pollen germination, pollen tube growth, pollen tube guidance, or pollen tube penetration of the female tissues. The genetic basis of signaling events that lead to successful double-fertilization has been greatly facilitated by studies in the model organism Arabi

Improving pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) resistance in white-grained wheat is challenging because reduced grain pigmentation is often associated with weaker seed dormancy. Here, we evaluated the breeding value of the white-grained, PHS-resistant landrace Tuotuomai (TTM) and developed a molecular marker for tracking TTM-derived material during breeding. Based on phenotypic segregation and sequence polymorphism analysis, a KASP marker targeting a polymorphic site in the TaMyb10-D1 region was developed. The marker co-segregated with white grain color in the TTM × CS population, and the TTM-type mark

Crop wild relatives (CWRs) retain extensive genetic diversity lost during crop domestication, yet their translation into breeding outcomes remains constrained by fundamental quantitative-genetic and population-genetic bottlenecks. Here, we propose an integrative framework that evaluates CWR deployment through three interconnected genetic lenses: (i) the architecture of domestication bottlenecks and their consequences for allelic diversity, linkage disequilibrium, and selectable genetic variation in modern breeding pools; (ii) the genetic determinants of successful allele transfer, distinguishi

BACKGROUND: Most crop plants, including sugar beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. vulgaris), suffer from domestication bottlenecks and low genetic diversity caused by extensive selection for few traits. However, crop wild relatives (CWRs) harbour useful traits relevant for crop improvement, including enhanced adaptation to biotic and abiotic stresses. Especially polyploids are interesting from an evolutionary perspective as the genome undergoes reorganisation after the polyploidisation event. Through neo- and subfunctionalisation, novel gene functions emerge, which enable plants to cope with changing e
