Emergence of drug resistance demands new therapeutic strategies against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Currently, there is an increasing research focus on targeting gene expression-the crucial step wherein new viruses and new viral strains are amplified. Moreover, natural products are also being considered as potential candidates for new antivirals. We screened the extract obtained from a Philippine medicinal plant, Mentha cordifolia (Mc). In this study, we demonstrated that Mc ammonium sulfate extract has antiretroviral activity against HIV. HIV-1 latently infected cells (OM10.1) wer

Studies of breast cancer therapy have examined the improvement of bispecific trastuzumab/pertuzumab antibodies interacting simultaneously with two different epitopes of the human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). Here, we describe the creation and production of plant-made bispecific antibodies based on trastuzumab and pertuzumab plant biosimilars (bi-TPB-PPB). Using surface plasmon resonance analysis of bi-TPB-PPB antibodies binding with the HER2 extracellular domain, we showed that the obtained Kd values were within the limits accepted for modified trastuzumab and pertuzumab. Despite

Interactions between dendritic cells (DCs) and environmental, dietary and pathogen antigens play a key role in immune homeostasis and regulation of inflammation. Dietary polyphenols such as proanthocyanidins (PAC) may reduce inflammation, and we therefore hypothesized that PAC may suppress lipopolysaccharide (LPS) -induced responses in human DCs and subsequent T helper type 1 (Th1) -type responses in naive T cells. Moreover, we proposed that, because DCs are likely to be exposed to multiple stimuli, the activity of PAC may synergise with other bioactive molecules that have anti-inflammatory ac

Urban airborne particulate is a complex mixture of air pollutants, many of which have not been identified. However, short-term mutagenesis tests together with chemicophysical parameter analysis are able to better assess air quality and genotoxic load. The findings of continuous monitoring (January 1991-August 1998) of urban air genotoxicity of a Po Valley town (Italy) on Salmonella typhimurium and Saccharomyces cerevisiae are reported. During this period, various measures (catalytic devices, unleaded fuels, annual vehicle overhaul, etc.) to improve air-dispersed pollutant control were enforced

The microtubule-associated protein 65 (MAP65) family comprises key plant cytoskeletal regulators essential for microtubule array organization, cell division, cell elongation, and organ morphogenesis. Recent advances in molecular and cellular biology have facilitated functional characterization of these proteins. This review systematically summarizes the structural features, subcellular localization, action mechanisms, regulatory networks and functional divergence across species. Emerging evidence indicates that MAP65s not only participate in conventional microtubule functions, but also precise

INTRODUCTION: Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) drive tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence due to their self-renewal and differentiation capacities. Herbal medicines offer potential for targeting CSCs by disrupting key pathways, inducing apoptosis, and enhancing the efficacy of conventional therapy. This review evaluates the effectiveness of plant-based compounds in suppressing CSCs across various cancers.
METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across databases (ISI Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts) up to March 2025, using keywords su

Vertical elongation in land plants is a primary adaptive strategy driven by competitive pressures for increased height, conferring significant advantages for photosynthesis and long-distance dispersal. In these lineages, structural integrity is primarily mediated by the deposition of thick extracellular cell walls. In seed plants, these walls often exhibit a cross-laminated architecture, defined by cellulose microfibrils arranged at alternating angles, and lignin reinforcement, leveraging structural anisotropy to enhance mechanical resilience. However, the evolutionary chronology of the acquis

Plants continuously adjust growth and development in response to environmental fluctuations through mechanisms that coordinate gene expression and cell cycle progression. Advances in our understanding of these regulatory pathways support a model in which they function as interconnected layers that fine-tune cell cycle progression according to developmental and environmental signals. Alternative splicing (AS) has emerged as a major regulatory layer in these processes, generating transcript diversity and modulating the activity of genes involved in developmental transitions and stress responses.

Four hundred Phytochemical (bio-active) compounds having predictive activity for treating Sickle Cell Anemia were screened, using PASS online computational resource. Twenty-six compounds out of the four hundred compounds which showed high probability for treating sickle were further screened for pharmacokinetics profiles (ADMET properties) using SwissAdmet, AdmetSAR 2 and Pro-tox II online resources. Only thirteen compounds that displayed good ADMET properties from the twenty-six were further used for DFT calculations and molecular docking against carbonmonoxy sickle hemoglobin (PDB ID: 5E6E).

Plant xyloglucan:xyloglucosyl transferases, known as xyloglucan endo-transglycosylases (XETs) are the key players that underlie plant cell wall dynamics and mechanics. These fundamental roles are central for the assembly and modifications of cell walls during embryogenesis, vegetative and reproductive growth, and adaptations to living environments under biotic and abiotic (environmental) stresses. XET enzymes (EC 2.4.1.207) have the β-sandwich architecture and the β-jelly-roll topology, and are classified in the glycoside hydrolase family 16 based on their evolutionary history. XET enzymes cat

Flavones are a class of natural plant secondary metabolites that have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effects. Some flavones also activate the T2R14 bitter taste receptor, which is expressed in motile cilia of the sinonasal epithelium and activates innate immune nitric oxide (NO) production. Flavones may thus be potential therapeutics for respiratory infections. Our objective was to examine the anti-microbial effects of flavones on the common sinonasal pathogens Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, evaluating both planktonic and biofilm growth. Flavones had

Our previous study has shown that dihydroisosteviol (DHIS), a derivative of stevioside isolated from Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni), inhibits cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR)-mediated transepithelial chloride secretion across monolayers of human intestinal epithelial (T84) cells and prevents cholera toxin-induced intestinal fluid secretion in mouse closed loop models. In this study, we aimed to investigate a mechanism by which DHIS inhibits CFTR activity. Apical chloride current measurements in Fisher rat thyroid cells stably transfected with wild-type human CFTR (FRT-CF

Plants produce a considerable number of metabolites, and many of them appear to interfere with certain cellular processes such as cell division. For example, taxanes produced by Taxus are known as anti-cancer drugs that stabilize microtubules and prevent the cell from dividing normally. Disorder of cell division also leads to abnormal growth and development in plants. It is worthy of consideration whether these metabolites have negative effects on plants per se. In this study, we developed an efficient screening system for identifying plant metabolites affecting rapeseed seedling root growth.

The E2F family plays a pivotal role in cell cycle control and is conserved among plants and animals, but not in fungi. This provides for the possibility that the E2F family was integrated during the development of higher organisms, but little is known about this. We examined the effect of E2F ectopically expressed in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) plants on growth and development using E2Fa (AtE2F3) and DPa from Arabidopsis. E2Fa-DPa double transgenic lines exhibited altered phenotypes with curled leaves, round shaped petals, and shortened pistils. In mature but not immature leaves of

In plant organisms, cells have two ways of being connected to each other. They are either adhering to the same neighbouring cells since mitosis or they enter in contact de novo with a new cell and adhered themselves. These different intercellular interactions have multiple roles depending on the location of the cell studied or the stage of the plant's life cycle. Intercellular adhesion, for example, helps in maintaining tissue integrity, controlling cell shape, and even plays a role in defense. De novo cell adhesion, on the other hand, occurs at specific times in the life of the plant, particu

Plant developmental biology lacks cell-based experimental systems comparable to the organoids and live-imaging platforms that have transformed mechanistic discovery in animal research. To address this gap, we present a robust, trackable protoplast regeneration platform in Arabidopsis thaliana that enables high-resolution, time-resolved analysis from the single-cell stage through microcolony formation and early regenerative development. Protoplasts are embedded in thin alginate matrices containing fluorescent fiducial beads, maintaining physical separation and allowing repeated return to the sa
