Anticipatory and Consummatory Responses Across Reward Domains in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is characterized by a tendency to limit intake of food, with specific restriction of foods that are generally considered highly palatable. This observation raises questions about whether reward processing is disturbed in AN. This study examined whether adolescents with AN differ from healthy control peers (HC) in anticipatory and consummatory reward processing. METHOD: Adolescents with AN (n = 71) and HC (n = 41) completed the Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS). The TEPS Anticipatory Pleasure scale was divided into two further subscales (Food and Non

Body maps of the sensation of musical groove.

Rhythmic music often leads to an urge to move the body in time with the music. This urge to move can be a pleasurable experience. In psychology, we define the pleasurable wanting to move to music as groove. Here, we investigate where in the body these two groove components-movement and pleasure-are felt and whether the embodied sensations depend on the musical genre. Using a body sensation map paradigm, we found that the funk genre, which elicited high levels of groove, increased sensations across the whole body, including in the head, shoulders, upper chest, abdomen, arms, hands, hips, legs,

Imagine for tomorrow, what you cannot feel now - The role of anhedonia in imagery-enhanced behavioral activation.

Preliminary evidence suggests that mental imagery-based elaboration of rewarding activities enhances anticipated pleasure, motivation, and behavioral engagement in non-clinical samples, but its effects in individuals experiencing anhedonia (loss of pleasure/interest) is unclear. Study 1 (N = 90) contrasted imagery-enhanced activity scheduling with two scheduling-only control conditions (Reminder/No Reminder Control) in an unselected sample. Study 2 (N = 108) compared imagery-enhanced activity scheduling with two control conditions (Neutral Imagery/Motivational Verbal Reasoning) in individuals

Analgesia produced in women by genital self-stimulation.

This study investigated the relative effectiveness of specific genital regional self-stimulation in elevating pain thresholds. Anecdotal reports in humans suggest that sexual activity and orgasm decrease a wide variety of human responses to pain and touch, but the phenomenon has not been evaluated objectively. Two types of self-stimulation, pressure and pleasurable, were applied by 10 women to the anterior vaginal wall, the posterior vaginal wall, and the clitoris. Significant increases in pain thresholds but not tactile thresholds occurred when pressure stimulation was applied to the anterior

The contribution of the cervix to sexual response: an online survey study.

BACKGROUND: The role of the cervix in sexual response has been poorly studied, despite previous research indicating that some women experience pleasurable sexual sensations from cervical stimulation; given previous reports of sexual issues after cervix electrocautery, it is possible that cervical injury may compromise the role of the cervix in sexual functioning. AIM: The aims of this study were to examine locations of pleasurable sexual sensations, to identify sexual communication barriers, and to investigate if cervical procedures are associated with negative impacts on sexual function. Where on the obsessive impulsive-compulsive spectrum does hair-pulling disorder belong?

OBJECTIVE: Hair-pulling disorder (HPD) is a putative obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder, but proper categorization is challenging. Distinct subgroups of HPD may exist, depending on the primary motivation in the act of pulling. Two notable proposed subgroups are "relief pullers" (pulling primarily to reduce anxiety- a "compulsive" subgroup) and "pleasure/gratification pullers" (pulling primarily for reward- an "impulsive" subgroup) which we sought to examine in order to contribute to conversations on the categorization of HPD. METHODS: A total of 111 HPD subjects (mean age 33.7 ± 10.7 [ran

Scratching Induces Overactivity in Motor-Related Regions and Reward System in Chronic Itch Patients.

Scratching evokes a rewarding and pleasurable sensation, particularly in chronic itch patients. To date, no study has investigated the cerebral activity during scratching in chronic itch patients and whether it differs from that in healthy subjects. Using arterial spin labeling functional magnetic resonance imaging, we analyzed and compared the cerebral mechanism of self-scratching and its correlation with pleasurability in 10 patients with chronic itch and in 10 healthy controls. Cowhage was applied to the right forearm to induce itch. Scratching significantly attenuated the itch sensation (P

Gender differences in affective reactions to first coitus.

Men's and women's affective reactions to their first sexual intercourse experience were examined. Eighty-seven college men and 122 college women completed questionnaires about first coital experience. Women were significantly more likely to report that their first sexual experience left them feeling less pleasure, satisfaction, and excitement than men, and more sadness, guilt, nervousness, tension, embarrassment, and fear. Factor analyses were used to group emotions into coherent factors for each sex. Four factors emerged for men: pleasure, romance, anxiety, and guilt. Three factors emerged fo

Entactogen Effects of Ketamine: A Reverse-Translational Study.

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to assess the prosocial, entactogen effects of ketamine. METHODS: Pleasure from social situations was assessed in a sample of participants with treatment-resistant depression from randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, using four items of the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) at five time points over 1 week following treatment with ketamine (0.5 mg/kg intravenously) or placebo. The primary endpoint was postinfusion self-reported pleasure on the four SHAPS items pertaining to social situations, including the item on helping others, between the

VR-based experimental study on daylight brightness, satisfaction and room use preference in housing design.

Virtual reality (VR) enables immersive simulations of building designs that enhance user engagement and spatial understanding. This study investigates how virtual daylight conditions in virtual residential environments influence occupants' emotional and behavioral responses. A within-subjects experimental study was conducted with 30 participants. Each participant experienced two virtual environment settings (rooms with different window orientation) using an HTC Vive head-mounted display. Participants rated each scene on brightness, pleasure, satisfaction, and preference to use the room. The re

RNA sequencing-based analysis of gallbladder cancer reveals the importance of the liver X receptor and lipid metabolism in gallbladder cancer.

INTRODUCTION: The dimension of nursing practice in rural areas represents a commitment to solving problems inherent to diverse contexts, and work is influenced by the pleasure-suffering dyad. In this sense, this study aimed to identify and map the factors that cause pleasure and suffering in the work process of rural nurses. This study is important because it sheds light on the unique psychosocial challenges and satisfactions experienced by rural nurses - professionals who are often overlooked in global health discussions. By identifying key factors of pleasure and suffering in the work proces

Deficits in consummatory reward relate to severity of cocaine use.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Identifying modifiable neuropsychological factors associated with more severe CUD could improve CUD treatment. Impairments in processing of non-drug rewards may be one such factor. This study assessed the relationship between reward functioning and cocaine use severity using multi-modal measures of three distinct reward functions: consummatory reward (pleasure or "liking"); motivational reward ("wanting") and reward learning. METHODS: Fifty-three adults with at least moderate CUD completed self-report and behavioral measures of consummatory reward, motivational reward and

Adolescents' descriptions of the physical characteristics of microbicide surrogates and experiences of use.

PURPOSE: Our purpose was to describe adolescent girls' perceptions of microbicide surrogates and experiences of use, including impact on sexual pleasure. METHODS: Sexually experienced girls, 14-21 years, were recruited for a study examining microbicide acceptability. The girls were given vaginal moisturizers (gel or suppository) to use as if they were microbicides. Girls (n = 175) discussed their perceptions and experiences of use of these products in response to semistructured interviews. Girls were asked at weekly phone interviews about the impact of product use on their and their partners'

Feminine Sexuality and the Work of the Negative.

The present paper discusses the intricate development of feminine sexuality by drawing on the ideas of André Green. The paper's main argument is that feminine sexuality is unique in being dependent on the creation of a representation of an internal empty space (as an ontological entity). This takes place through "the work of the negative" and involves an instinctual movement of "double reversal," by which the drive directed at the object helps the subject establish their own body as a source of pleasure. The author will argue that the combination of these two processes, defined in this paper a

A preliminary investigation of a novel method to manipulate penis length to measure female sexual satisfaction: a single-case experimental design.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate a novel methodology and explore whether artificially reducing the depth of penetration during intercourse matters to women. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A study with a single-case experimental design ('n of 1'), in which a heterosexual couple act as their own control and the study is then replicated in subsequent couples, was conducted. Thirty-five couples were assessed for eligibility to participate. Twenty-nine couples without any sexual problems were randomized and 12 submitted sufficient data to analyse. As a proxy for reducing penis length, we artificially reduced

Sexual activity and functioning after risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy: Impact of hormone replacement therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine sexual activity and functioning in women after risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) compared with the general population (NORM). METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. 294 women who underwent RRSO and 1228 women from the NORM group provided written information based on mailed questionnaires. Sexual pleasure and discomfort scores and frequency of sexual activity were evaluated using the Sexual Activity Questionnaire. RESULTS: The RRSO group reported less sexual pleasure (10.5 vs. 11.9, P=0.009), more discomfort (1.9 vs. 0.83, P<0.001), and less frequent sex than did

Structural correlates of anhedonia across psychiatric diagnoses: a dimensional analysis.

Anhedonia, the reduced capacity to experience or anticipate pleasure, is a transdiagnostic feature predicting poor outcome. Its structural correlates and whether the anticipatory and consummatory components have separable anatomy remain unclear. We analysed structural MRI and TEPS scores from 195 adults (85 healthy controls; 110 outpatients: MDD n = 37, anxiety n = 29, bipolar n = 18, psychotic-spectrum n = 12, other n = 14) in the openly available Transdiagnostic Connectome Project. Volumes of ten cortical and subcortical regions were extracted using the volBrain/AssemblyNet pipeline and adju

Changes in auditory P300 with clinical remission in schizophrenia: effects of facial-affect stimuli.

The auditory P300 is affected by arousal and emotion. We examined the effect of drawings expressing sadness or pleasure on auditory event-related potentials (ERP) during recovery from schizophrenia. Oddball-paradigm auditory ERP were recorded while presenting one of these drawings to nine patients with paranoid schizophrenia and seven patients with other types of schizophrenia during the acute stage and again during remission. P300 parameters (amplitude, area, and latency), reaction time, and symptom scores were evaluated. P300 amplitude and area were significantly greater in the recovery than

From Neural Circuits to Behavior: Examining the Central Role of Anhedonia in Major Depression.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is ranked as one of the most debilitating conditions worldwide (Malhi GS, Mann JJ. Lancet 392:2299-2312, 2018). Anhedonia, a core symptom of MDD, is described as an inability to experience pleasure and a lack of motivation. Emerging evidence highlights anhedonia's contribution to MDD trajectory, including treatment response and remission. Over the years, the conceptualization of anhedonia has evolved from a simple "loss of pleasure" to encompassing a wide range of reward-processing deficits. Shifting focus from the consummatory aspect of pleasure unveiled the mu
