Infection Transmission Associated with Point of Care Testing and the Laboratory's Role in Risk Reduction.

Lack of knowledge and confusion exists regarding safe and appropriate use of blood glucose monitoring equipment. Increasing numbers of diabetics, and exponential growth in blood glucose monitoring presents increased opportunities for infection transmission between patients. Diabetics have increased exposure to blood and blood borne pathogens from frequent blood glucose monitoring. Risk factors have been identified in infectious outbreaks and by analysis of testing practice. Point of care blood glucose meters are frequently contaminated by blood. Bacterial and viral organisms survive on surface

Impact of decentralised, community-led molecular STI point-of-care testing on testing practices in remote First Nations communities in Australia.

OBJECTIVE: In remote Australia, where there is a substantial burden of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among First Nations peoples, testing and timely treatment are key to reducing prevalence. We evaluated the impact of introducing molecular point-of-care (POC) testing for chlamydia/gonorrhoea and later trichomonas on STI testing (including syphilis) and positive tests. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective interrupted time-series analysis of routinely collected data from First Nations peoples aged 15-54 years attending 20 remote/regional clinics participating in the Test, Treat and GO

Noninvasive, Rapid, and Ultrasensitive Detection of Salivary Glycated Hemoglobin for Point-of-Care Testing of Diabetes.

The glycated hemoglobin ratio (HbA1c %) serves as the gold standard for diabetes diagnosis, but traditional detection methods require invasive blood testing. Although saliva holds promising noninvasive potential, the complex salivary matrix and the low abundance of salivary hemoglobin (Hb) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) restrict the development of reliable immunoassays. Here, we present an HbA1c/Hb dual-detection lateral flow assay (LFA) platform for rapid and noninvasive quantification of salivary HbA1c %. The assay integrates two distinct capture strategies onto a single LFA strip: a strept

Impact of Point-of-Care Testing on Diagnosis, Treatment, and Surveillance of Vaccine-Preventable Viral Infections.

With the advent of a variety of vaccines against viral infections, there are multiple viruses that can be prevented via vaccination. However, breakthrough infections or uncovered strains can still cause vaccine-preventable viral infections (VPVIs). Therefore, timely diagnosis, treatment, and surveillance of these viruses is critical to patient care and public health. Point-of-care (POC) viral diagnostics tools have brought significant improvements in the detection and management of VPVIs. These cutting-edge technologies enable prompt and accurate results, enhancing patient care by facilitating

Point-of-care testing of butyrylcholinesterase activity through modulating the photothermal effect of cuprous oxide nanoparticles.

Butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) is an important indicator for clinical diagnosis of liver dysfunction, organophosphate toxicity, and poststroke dementia. Point-of-care testing (POCT) of BChE activity is still a challenge, which is a critical requirement for the modern clinical diagnose. A portable photothermal BChE assay is proposed through modulating the photothermal effects of Cu2O nanoparticles. BChE can catalyze the decomposition of butyrylcholine, producing thiocholine, which further reduce and coordinate with CuO on surface of Cu2O nanoparticle. This leads to higher efficiency of formation

Development of a µPAD for the point-of-care testing of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT).

A wax-patterned paper analytical device (µPAD) has been developed for point-of-care colourimetric testing of serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT). The detection method was based on the transamination reaction of aspartate with α-ketoglutarate, leading to the formation of oxaloacetate which reacts with the reagent Fast Blue BB salt and forms a cavern pink colour. The intensity of the cavern pink colour grows as the concentration of SGOT increases. UV-visible spectroscopy was utilized to optimize reaction conditions, and the optimized reagents were dropped onto the wax-patterned paper.

Prehospital Point of Care Testing for the Early Detection of Shock and Prediction of Lifesaving Interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for enhancing outcomes for the traumatically injured. In this prospective prehospital observational study, we hypothesized that a variety of laboratory results measured in the prehospital environment would predict both the presence of early shock and the need for lifesaving interventions (LSIs) for adult patients with traumatic injuries. METHODS: Adult trauma patients flown by a helicopter emergency medical service were prospectively enrolled. Using an i-STAT portable analyzer, data from 16 laboratory tests were collected. Vital signs

Machine learning-assisted smartphone fluorescence sensing for ultrasensitive and point-of-care testing of acid phosphatase.

BACKGROUND: Fluorescence-based methods are crucial in clinical diagnosis due to their high sensitivity and visualization capabilities. Traditional single-emission sensors often have the problems of background interference and poor visual recognition in complex biological environments. Although multicolor fluorescence visualization sensors can broaden the color gamut to improve resolution, they are still limited by subjective human color judgment and individual differences. RESULTS: We developed a three-color fluorescence sensing platform that integrates smartphone machine learning (ML) to ena

Point-of-Care Bilirubin Testing in Neonates: Comparative Performance of Blood Gas Analysis and Transcutaneous Bilirubinometry.

Background: Neonatal jaundice is a common condition with potentially severe complications such as bilirubin-induced neurological dysfunction and kernicterus. While serum bilirubin (SBR) remains the standard laboratory measurement, point-of-care methods, such as transcutaneous bilirubinometry (TcB) and blood gas analysers (BGAs), offer rapid, less invasive alternatives. Direct comparisons of their diagnostic accuracy remain limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess and compare diagnostic accuracy and clinical utility of TcB and BGA against SBR in neonatal hyperbilirubinaemia scree
