Ancient genomes reveal distinct human dispersals and social stratification in the settlement history of western Remote Oceania.

The settlement of western Remote Oceania involved interactions among deeply divergent populations. Initial settlement ∼3,000 years ago by Lapita-associated, Southeast Asian-related groups was followed by Papuan-related expansions and later sea voyages from Polynesia. We present genome-wide data spanning the past three millennia from the eastern Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, and Tonga. We find that the Papuan-related expansion proceeded at a slower pace than the earlier Lapita-associated expansion and reached Fiji through at least two distinct human dispersals, centuries earlier than previous

Three new species of abdominal shrimp parasites (Crustacea: Isopoda: Bopyridae: Hemiarthrinae) from the Indo-West Pacific.

Three new species of the parasitic isopod subfamily Hemiarthrinae Markham, 1972 are described. Allodiplophryxus unilateralis n. sp. is described from Western Australia, infesting the palaemonid shrimp Jocaste lucina (Nobili, 1901), and females differ from the only other species in the genus in possessing six pleomeres, an asymmetrical first oostegite and pleopods restricted to the short side of the body. Loki athanus n. sp. is described from Madagascar, infesting the alpheid shrimp Athanas parvus de Man, 1910, and females differ from the only other species in the genus in possessing well-devel

Zika Virus Potentiates the Development of Neurological Defects and Microcephaly: Challenges and Control Strategies.

Since the beginning of the Zika Virus (ZIKV) epidemic, thousands of cases presenting ZIKV symptoms were recorded in Brazil, Colombia (South America), French Polynesia and other countries of Central and North America. In Brazil, during ZIKV outbreak thousands of microcephaly cases occurred that caused a state of urgency among scientists and researchers to confirm the suspected association between ZIKV infection and microcephaly. In this review article we comprehensively studied scientific literature to analyze ZIKV relationship with microcephaly, recent experimental studies, challenge and short

Understanding the Pathogenesis of Zika Virus Infection Using Animal Models.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a member of Flaviviridae family that has emerged as a pathogen of significant public health importance. The rapid expansion of ZIKV in the South and Central America has recently gained medical attention emphasizing the capacity of ZIKV to spread to non-endemic regions. ZIKV infection during pregnancy has been demonstrated to cause microcephaly and other fetal developmental abnormalities. An increased incidence of Guillain-Barre syndrome, an immune mediated neuropathy of the peripheral nervous system, has also been reported in ZIKV-infected patients in French Polynesia and

Cluster of eosinophilic meningitis attributable to Angiostrongylus cantonensis infection in French policemen troop returning from the Pacific Islands.

BACKGROUND: Outbreaks of eosinophilic meningitis are reported rarely, even in regions of endemic infestation with the roundworm Angiostrongylus cantonensis, such as the Pacific Basin. We report a cluster of eosinophilic meningitis presumably attributable to A. cantonensis among French policemen returning from French Polynesia. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study among French policemen who had stayed in Tahiti was conducted using a clinical definition of eosinophilic meningitis that included severe headache within 30 days after return and eosinophilia, and who consumed locally exotic ethnic

Cumulative mortality rates in Aedes polynesiensis after feeding on polynesian Wuchereria bancrofti carriers treated with single doses of ivermectin, diethylcarbamazine and placebo.

During a therapeutic trial, batches of 672 to 1979 laboratory-bred Aedes polynesiensis, the mosquito vector of lymphatic filariasis in French Polynesia, were fed on Wuchereria bancrofti carriers one, three and six months after they had been treated with either single doses of ivermectin at 100 mcg/kg, diethylcarbamazine (DEC) at 3 and 6 mg/kg or placebo. High mortality rates were observed during the 15-day period following the blood-meal in mosquitoes fed on carriers treated with microfilaricidal drugs and were significantly higher in mosquitoes fed on carriers treated with ivermectin than in

Screening of Blood Donations for Zika Virus Infection - Puerto Rico, April 3-June 11, 2016.

Transfusion-transmitted infections have been documented for several arboviruses, including West Nile and dengue viruses (1). Zika virus, a flavivirus transmitted primarily by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that has been identified as a cause of congenital microcephaly and other serious brain defects (2), became recognized as a potential threat to blood safety after reports from a 2013-2014 outbreak in French Polynesia. Blood safety concerns were based on very high infection incidence in the population at large during epidemics, the high percentage of persons with asymptomatic infection, the high pro

ZIKA--How fast does this virus mutate?

The World Health Organization has declared the present Zika virus epidemic to be a 'Public Health Emergency of International Concern'. The virus appears to have spread from Thailand to French Polynesia in 2013, and has since infected over a million people in the countries of South and Central America. In most cases the infection is mild and transient, but the virus does appear to be strongly neurotropic and the presumptive cause of both birth defects in fetuses and Guillain-Barré syndrome in some adults. In this paper, the techniques and utilities developed in the study of mitochondrial DNA we

Zika virus infection and once again the risk from other neglected diseases.

Since the first cases of Zika were identified and reported in Brazil, the magnitude and consequences of the outbreak in the Americas have increased tremendously, leading the World Health Organization to consider Zika and its link with clusters of microcephaly a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Only a previous large outbreak in French Polynesia was known and no neurological anomalies have been reported. Differences in African and Asian lineage and differences in genetic evolution of the Zika virus may possibly provide an explanation for the development of the recent outbreaks a

The demise of the American Indios.

This symposium takes as its point of departure two books by Massimo Livi Bacci, Conquest and El Dorado in the Marshes, published in English in 2008 and 2010. Livi Bacci assesses widely varying estimates of the demographic dimensions of the collapse of the Native populations following their contact with Europeans and elucidates the proximate causes of that catastrophe. Drawing on models that combine production potential with demography, environment, and technology, Shripad Tuljapurkar discusses analogous historical experiences of the populations of Polynesia and the social transformation they e

Dengue fever outbreak in Cook Island: A rising concern, efforts, challenges, and future recommendations.

The Cook Island government has made several efforts to ensure zero confirmed cases and transmission of COVID-19, especially among visiting travelers. However, the Cook Island ministry of health has to deal with the new strain of dengue fever outbreak, known as dengue fever type 2 (DEN-2), by adopting several measures to control its spread, especially in the affected parts of the subtropical country. This paper aims to describe the dengue fever response taken in Cook Island and suggest recommendations to control the risk of transmission in endemic parts of the world.

[The treatment of microfilaremia due to Wuchereria bancrofti var. pacifica: ivermectin versus diethylcarbamazine].

In October 1989, a controlled, double-blind parallel group trial was implemented to compare both efficacy and tolerability of single doses of ivermectin and diethylcarbamazine (DEC). Fifty eight apparently healthy Wuchereria bancrofti carriers were hospitalized and randomly allocated to treatment with ivermectin 100 mcg/kg, DEC 3 or 6 mg/kg. Six months later, half of those initially treated with ivermectin 100 mcg/kg and DEC 3 mg/kg were given a second similar dose while the rest were given a placebo. After initial treatment, clearance of microfilaremia was complete in 22 of the 23 carriers tr

Observations on the epidemiology of club foot in Polynesian and Caucasian populations.

Although Polynesians are affected by idiopathic club foot deformity more commonly than other racial groups, epidemiological surveys performed in Auckland and Glasgow showed no other significant difference in their pattern of presentation compared with Caucasians. Distinctions in sex ratio and maternal age, reported previously between groups of index cases with and without a family history of the condition, were not confirmed in either racial group, and the predominance of right sided over left sided unilateral cases was no greater in Polynesians than in Caucasians. There was an excess of spora

The Polynesian head: growth and form.

We consider the cranial base to be the primordial determinant of the head form and mandibular shape so common amongst (but not exclusive to) adult Polynesians. The flatness of the cranial base manifests its full influence only when growth of the upper facial skeleton is complete in early adulthood. We argue that during growth and maturation the upper facial skeleton and the maxillary occlusal plane are required to adjust in position to a major extent according to the template set out by the flat cranial base, with consequent obligatory and extreme adjustment in shape and position of the mandib

Zika viruses of African and Asian lineages cause fetal harm in a mouse model of vertical transmission.

Congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) infection was first linked to birth defects during the American outbreak in 2015/2016. It has been proposed that mutations unique to the Asian/American-genotype explain, at least in part, the ability of Asian/American ZIKV to cause congenital Zika syndrome (CZS). Recent studies identified mutations in ZIKV infecting humans that arose coincident with the outbreak in French Polynesia and were stably maintained during subsequent spread to the Americas. Here we show that African ZIKV can infect and harm fetuses and that the S139N substitution that has been associated w
