Effects of habitat characteristics on the growth of carrier population leading to increased spread of typhoid fever: a model.

In this paper, a non-linear model is proposed and analyzed to study the effects of habitat characteristics favoring logistically growing carrier population leading to increased spread of typhoid fever. It is assumed that the cumulative density of habitat characteristics and the density of carrier population are governed by logistic models; the growth rate of the former increases as the density of human population increases. The model is analyzed by stability theory of differential equations and computer simulation. The analysis shows that as the density of the infective carrier population incr

Detection of genetic hypopituitarism in an adult population of idiopathic pituitary insufficiency patients with growth hormone deficiency.

Idiopathic pituitary insufficiency (IPI) is diagnosed in 10% of all hypopituitary patients. There are several known and unknown aetiologies within the IPI group. The aim of this study was to investigate an adult IPI population for genetic cause according a screening schedule. From files of 373 GH deficient (GHD) patients on GH replacement 50 cases with IPI were identified. Of the 39 patients that approved to the study, 25 patients were selected for genetic investigation according to phenotype and 14 patients were not further tested, as sporadic isolated GHD (n = 9) and GHD with diabetes insipi

[Contraception as an instrument against population growth: expert discussions and the public sphere in 1960s West Germany].

Theoretically, the introduction of the contraceptive pill in the 1960s created new possibilities to control population growth on a global scale. Several of those involved in developing the pill belonged to the transnational population control movement. In the Federal Republic, demographic and medical experts in the 1960s debated the advantages and dangers of the new contraceptive, and they argued about whether it could be of benefit in West Germany and/or in developing countries. The paper examines the contemporary debate about the pill and the role it was awarded in the effort to solve what w

Effect of cadmium and chromium toxicity on the demography and population growth of Brachionus calyciflonrs and Brachionus patulus (Rotifera).

This paper reports on the assessment of the effect of Cd+2 and Cr+6 to the rotifers Brachionus calyciflorus and B. patulus using life table demography and population growth. Based on acute toxicity tests, cadmium was nearly 100 times more toxic than chromium for both the rotifer species. Age-specific fecundity curves of both the brachionids showed increased offspring beyond the age of 4 days and after that the production nearly stabilized for about 10 days and later declined. At any given treatment, B. calyciflorus had the higher rate of offspring production than B. patulus. For any given roti

[Gly380Arg and Asn540Lys mutations of fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 in achondroplasia and hypochndroplasia in the Spanish population].

BACKGROUND: Achondroplasia, the most common type of genetic dwarfism characterised by disproportionate short stature and other skeletal anomalies, results from a defect in the maturation of the chondrocytes in the growth plate cartilage. Hypochondroplasia, considered allelic to achondroplasia is clinically and genetically heterogeneous. Recent studies have mapped the gene on chromosome 4p16.3, and frequent mutations in the fibroblast growth factor 3 (FGFR3) have been described in these diseases in other populations. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Analysis of the FGFR3 gene mutations Gly380Arg and Asn5

Age distribution of inoculated cells and stochasticity of inter-division times generate pseudo-lag in population growth.

Population-level growth parameters, such as specific growth rate (or doubling time) and lag time, can be inferred directly from the distribution of the inter-division times of single cells. Applying stochastic branching process theory to the multiplication of bacterial cells, we demonstrate that a) the lag time, or time-shift, detectable at population level is primarily determined by the (random) time-to-first-division of the initial cells and b) exponentially growing populations converge to a stable age distribution characterized by a ratio of approximately 2:1 between the number of young and

Live Multi-Strain Probiotics Enhance Growth Performance by Regulating Intestinal Morphology and Microbiome Population in Weaning Piglets.

The effects of different forms of multi-strain probiotics on weaning piglets are limitedly addressed. Thus, this study investigated the effects of live or inanimate multi-strain probiotics comprising Lactobacillus plantarum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Bacillus subtilis on growth performance, intestinal morphology, fecal microbiota, short-chain fatty acids, and intestinal gene expression of weaning piglets. A total of 160 weaning piglets (4 weeks old) were randomly allocated into four treatments (CON: basal diet; AB: basal diet with 110 ppm and 66 ppm colistin in the weaning and nursery ph

Increased insulin-like growth factor 1 concentrations in a population of non-diabetic cats with overweight/obesity.

Feline hypersomatotropism (HST) is typically associated with diabetes mellitus (DM), whereas HST without concurrent DM has only been reported in a few cases. Weight gain may be observed in cats with HST. The aims of this study were to evaluate circulating insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in non-diabetic cats with overweight/obesity, to screen this population for the presence of HST, and to assess whether there is a correlation between body weight/body condition score (BCS) and serum IGF-1 concentration in overweight/obese cats. In this prospective study, 80 overweight/obese cats from refer

Prenatal exposure to antiseizure medications and fetal growth: a population-based cohort study from the Nordic countries.

BACKGROUND: The short- and long-term consequences of restricted fetal growth cause considerable concern, and how prenatal exposure to different antiseizure medications (ASMs) affects fetal growth remains uncertain. METHODS: This was a population-based cohort study of liveborn singleton children born in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden from 1996 to 2017. Prenatal exposure was defined as maternal filling of prescriptions for ASM during pregnancy registered in national prescription registries and primary outcomes were adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of microcephaly or being born small f

Mother-level random effect in the association between PM2.5 and fetal growth: A population-based pregnancy cohort.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of literature reports associations between exposure to particulate matter with diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) during pregnancy and birth outcomes. However, findings are inconsistent across studies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association between PM2.5 and birth outcomes of fetal growth in a cohort with high prevalence of siblings by multilevel models accounting for geographical- and mother-level correlations. METHODS: In Israel, we used Maccabi Healthcare Services data to establish a population-based cohort of 381,265 singleton births reaching 24-42 weeks' gestation and bi

Beyond Temperature: Relative Humidity Systematically Shifts Juvenile Thermal Performance and Projected Population Growth in a Malaria Vector.

Understanding how temperature-sensitive organisms respond to environmental change is central to addressing challenges in public health, biodiversity conservation and food security. For many ectotherms, abiotic and biotic factors shape their abundance and distribution by generating stage-specific variation in life history traits. Although previous studies have examined temperature, rainfall, competition and habitat quality in relation to maximal population growth rate ( r m $$ {r}_{\mathrm{m}} $$ ), relative humidity has rarely been incorporated into trait-based thermal performance framewor

Evolution of Sagittal Spinal Alignment During Pubertal Growth: A Large-Scale Study in a Chinese Pediatric Population.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported normative data for sagittal spinal alignment in asymptomatic adults. The sagittal spinal alignment change in European children was recently reported. However, there is a lack of studies on the normative reference values of sagittal spinal and pelvic alignment and how these parameters change at different growth stages in Chinese children. The aims of this study were to establish the normative reference values of sagittal spinopelvic parameters in Chinese children, to investigate their variation during growth, and to compare these parameters between Chi

Urinary Potassium Excretion, Fibroblast Growth Factor 23, and Incident Hypertension in the General Population-Based PREVEND Cohort.

High plasma fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and low potassium intake have each been associated with incident hypertension. We recently demonstrated that potassium supplementation reduces FGF23 levels in pre-hypertensive individuals. The aim of the current study was to address whether 24-h urinary potassium excretion, reflecting dietary potassium intake, is associated with FGF23, and whether FGF23 mediates the association between urinary potassium excretion and incident hypertension in the general population. At baseline, 4194 community-dwelling individuals without hypertension were include

Growth and Pubertal Timing in Boys With Adult-diagnosed Celiac Disease: A Population-based Longitudinal Cohort Study.

There are few longitudinal data on whether childhood growth and pubertal timing may be impaired by adult-diagnosed celiac disease (CD). Through school health care records and national registers, we retrieved serial growth measurements on 37,672 Swedish boys born in 1945 to 1961, out of whom 72 (0.2%) were clinically diagnosed with CD as adults. Boys with, versus without, adult-diagnosed CD exhibited no appreciable mean differences in body mass index (BMI, kg/m) and height (cm) at ages 8 or 20 to 21 years (childhood BMI, 15.9 [CD] vs 15.7 [comparators]; childhood height, 129.1 [CD] vs 128.6 [co

Adverse perinatal outcomes in immigrants: A ten-year population-based observational study and assessment of growth charts.

BACKGROUND: Maternity populations are becoming increasingly multiethnic. Conflicting findings exist regarding the risk of adverse perinatal outcomes among immigrant mothers from different world regions and which growth charts are most appropriate for identifying the risk of adverse outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether infant mortality and morbidity, and the categorisation of infants as small for gestational age or large for gestational age (SGA or LGA) vary by maternal country of birth, and to assess whether the choice of growth chart alters the risk of adverse outcomes in infants categor

The association between HIV/AIDS during pregnancy and fetal growth parameters in Florida: a population based study.

In this population-based retrospective study, we sought to investigate the association between HIV/AIDS during pregnancy and adverse birth outcomes, including low birth weight (LBW), very low birth weight (VLBW), preterm birth (PTB), very preterm birth (VPTB), and small for gestational age (SGA), among women in Florida by sociodemographic variables. Using data from Florida's maternally linked birth cohort files, we examined singleton live births in the state during 1998 to 2007 (N = 1,698,107). The study population was categorized based on the maternal HIV/AIDS status. Poisson regression model

Fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 Gly388Arg polymorphism associated with severity of gallstone disease in a Chinese population.

The etiology of gallstone disease is multifactorial; supersaturation of bile with cholesterol is a primary cause for gallstone formation. In previous studies, we found that fibroblast growth factor receptor 4 (FGFR4) plays an important role in maintaining bile acid homeostasis by regulating the expression of cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1), a rate-limiting enzyme for bile acid biosynthesis. The Gly388Arg (G-388R) polymorphism of FGFR4 affects stabilization and activation of FGFR4. Consequently, we studied the FGFR4 gene as a candidate gene for genetic susceptibility to gallstone disease. W
