Revision of the world Monoctonia Starý, parasitoids of gall aphids: taxonomy, distribution, host range, and phylogeny (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Aphidiinae).

The present paper represents a contribution to the knowledge of the taxonomy of Monoctonia Starý aphid parasitoids obtained using the barcoding region of the mitochondrial COI gene. We discuss the phylogenetic position of the genus within the subtribe Monoctonina, redescribe known species, and describe Monoctonia japonica sp. n. from Japan in the association Pemphigus matsumurai Monzen/Populus maximowiczii. A key for species identification is provided. Also, we review and discuss the host records, origin, and geographical distribution of Monoctonia species. It is hypothesized that the genus Mo

Ash-forming elements of poplar and hybrid pennisetum negatively affect selective delignification ability of hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid pretreatment.

Hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAA) is widely used in bio-refinery by delignification but exhibits different delignification ability and xylan loss toward different biomass materials. This work discovered that the synergistic cyclic catalysis of ash-forming elements (Fe, Cu, and Mn) in biomass was responsible for the differences in lignin and xylan removal in HPAA pretreatment. After the addition of 10 mg/mL ash in HPAA at 60 °C for 2 h, the concentrations of H2O2 and peracetic acid were reduced to 50.2 and 12.8 mg/mL, respectively. The corresponding reduction in the redox potential of HPAA f

The male-heterogametic sex determination system on chromosome 15 of Salix triandra and Salix arbutifolia reveals ancestral male heterogamety and subsequent turnover events in the genus Salix.

Dioecious Salix evolved more than 45 million years ago, but have homomorphic sex chromosomes, suggesting that turnover event(s) prevented major differentiation. Sex chromosome turnover events have been inferred in the sister genus Populus. The genus Salix includes two main clades, Salix and Vetrix, with several previously studied Vetrix clade species having female-heterogametic (ZW) or male-heterogametic (XY) sex-determining systems (SDSs) on chromosome 15, while three Salix clade species have XY SDSs on chromosome 7. We here studied two basal taxa of the Vetrix clade, S. arbutifolia and S. tr

An optimum biomass fractionation strategy into maximum carbohydrates conversion and lignin valorization from poplar.

Appropriate fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass into useable forms is a key challenge to achieving an economic bioethanol production. In the present study, four different fractionation strategies of hydrothermal-, NaOH-, ethanol-, and NaOH catalyzed ethanol pretreatment were investigated to compare their abilities of cellulose conversion. Results showed that NaOH catalyzed ethanol pretreatment showed a rather high extent of delignification of 85.92%, which also enhanced the retention of cellulose (92.56%) and hemicellulose (76.57%); while other pretreatments tended to produce cellulose fr

Lignin Sulfonation and SO2 Addition Enhance the Hydrolyzability of Deacetylated and Then Steam-Pretreated Poplar with Reduced Inhibitor Formation.

The merit of deacetylation of corn stover prior to pretreatment is decreasing the formation of inhibitors and improving enzyme hydrolysis, proved in dilute acid pretreatment. However, few studies are done on how deacetylation would affect bioconversion process containing steam explosion. In this study, the effect of deacetylation on steam explosion was conducted using poplar as substrate. About 57 to 90% of acetyl group in poplar, depending on alkaline types and concentration, was removed by dilute alkaline deacetylation in 6 h. Deacetylation eliminated over 85% of inhibitor formation during d

Pretreatment of corn stover and hybrid poplar by sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide.

Sodium hydroxide and its derivatives are used as pulping reagents, wherein the spent NaOH is recovered in salt form and reused. In this study, use of low concentration NaOH (1-5%) in pretreatment of corn stover and hybrid poplar was investigated. It was done with the understanding that NaOH can be recovered. One of the main objectives in this study is to explore the potential of H(2)O(2) with NaOH for pretreatment of high lignin substrate such as hybrid poplar. Pretreatment time has not been optimized in this study but held constant at 24 h. Corn stover, after treatment with NaOH under moderat

Volatile cues from pathogenic, mutualistic and saprotrophic fungi cause specific, fungus-dependent responses in poplar.

Plants are exposed to complex interactions with belowground organisms, yet how they differentiate between mutualistic and pathogenic fungi before physical contact remains largely unknown. We exposed the roots of young Populus × canescens (Aiton) Sm. plants to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by fungi with contrasting lifestyles: the pathogenic Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref., the saprotrophPostia placenta (Fr.) M.J. Larsen & Lombard and the ectomycorrhizal fungus Laccaria bicolor (Maire) P.D. Orton. Which Plant Traits Increase Soil Carbon Sequestration? Empirical Evidence From a Long-Term Poplar Genetic Diversity Trial.

Plants play a key role in mediating soil response to global change, and breeding or engineering crops to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) storage is a potential route to land-based carbon dioxide removal in agricultural systems. However, due to limited observational datasets plus shifting paradigms of SOC stabilization, it is unclear which plant traits are most important for enhancing different types of soil organic matter. Existing long-term common gardens of genetically diverse plant populations may provide an opportunity to evaluate biological controls on SOC, separate from environmental

The 'photosynthetic C1 pathway' links carbon assimilation and growth in California poplar.

Although primarily studied in relation to photorespiration, serine metabolism in chloroplasts may play a key role in plant CO2 fertilization responses by linking CO2 assimilation with growth. Here, we show that the phosphorylated serine pathway is part of a 'photosynthetic C1 pathway' and demonstrate its high activity in foliage of a C3 tree where it rapidly integrates photosynthesis and C1 metabolism contributing to new biomass via methyl transfer reactions, imparting a large natural 13C-depleted signature. Using 13CO2-labelling, we show that leaf serine, the S-methyl group of leaf methionine

Valorization of Lignocellulose with One-Step Acidified Monophasic Phenoxyethanol Fractionation.

Effective fractionation of lignocelluosic biomass and subsequent valorization of all three major components under mild conditions were achieved. Pretreatment with acidified monophasic phenoxyethanol (EPH) efficiently removed 92.6 % lignin and 80 % xylan from poplar at 110 °C in 60 min, yielding high-value EPH-xyloside, EPH-modified lignin (EPHL), and a solid residue nearly purely composed of carbohydrates. After removing the grafted acetyl groups using 1 % NaOH at 50 °C, the highest enzymatic digestibility reached 92.3 %. EPHL could be recovered in high yield and purity with an uncondensed str

Habituation to thaxtomin A in hybrid poplar cell suspensions provides enhanced and durable resistance to inhibitors of cellulose synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Thaxtomin A (TA), a phytotoxin produced by the phytopathogen Streptomyces scabies, is essential for the development of potato common scab disease. TA inhibits cellulose synthesis but its actual mode of action is unknown. Addition of TA to hybrid poplar (Populus trichocarpa x Populus deltoides) cell suspensions can activate a cellular program leading to cell death. In contrast, it is possible to habituate hybrid poplar cell cultures to grow in the presence of TA levels that would normally induce cell death. The purpose of this study is to characterize TA-habituated cells and the mec

A geographic mosaic of trophic interactions and selection: trees, aphids and birds.

Genetic variation in plants is known to influence arthropod assemblages and species interactions. However, these influences may be contingent upon local environmental conditions. Here, we examine how plant genotype-based trophic interactions and patterns of natural selection change across environments. Studying the cottonwood tree, Populus angustifolia, the galling aphid, Pemphigus betae and its avian predators, we used three common gardens across an environmental gradient to examine the effects of plant genotype on gall abundance, gall size, aphid fecundity and predation rate on galls. Three

Tree age-dependent changes in photosynthetic and respiratory CO2 exchange in leaves of micropropagated diploid, triploid and hybrid aspen.

The growth rate of triploid European aspen (Populus tremula L.) and hybrid aspen (P. tremula × Populus tremuloides Michx.) significantly exceeds that of diploid aspen, but the underlying physiological controls of the superior growth rates of these genotypes are not known. We tested the hypothesis that the superior growth rate of triploid and hybrid aspen reflects their greater net photosynthesis rate. Micropropagated clonal plants varying in age from 2.5 to 19 months were used to investigate the ploidy and plant age interaction. The quantum yield of net CO2 fixation (Φ) in leaves of young 2.5-

Light-colored, low-condensed lignin via ultrasound- and alkali-assisted ethanol extraction for high-performance sunscreens.

The efficient and high-value utilization of lignin is crucial for advancing sustainable biorefining technologies. Conventional lignin separation methods often lead to the cleavage of β-O-4 linkages, resulting in dark-colored, highly condensed lignin with limited applicability in downstream industries. To overcome this limitation, an ultrasonic- and alkali-assisted ethanol extraction (UASE80) method was developed that enables efficient isolation of light-colored, low-condensed, and highly reactive lignin from poplar wood at ambient temperature. The extracted lignin retains a significant portion

A Constitutively Active Cytokinin Receptor Variant Increases Cambial Activity and Stem Growth in Poplar.

The cambial meristem is responsible for bark and wood formation in woody plants. The activity of the cambial meristem is controlled by various factors; one of them is the plant hormone cytokinin. Here, we have explored different approaches to genetically engineering cambial activity in poplar plants by the ectopic expression of a cytokinin biosynthesis gene with enhanced activity (named ROCK4) or of a gene encoding a constitutively active cytokinin receptor variant (ROCK3). Both genes are derived from Arabidopsis thaliana and were expressed in poplar trees under the control of their own promot

Heritable Phytohormone Profiles of Poplar Genotypes Vary in Resistance to a Galling Aphid.

Insect galls are highly specialized structures arising from atypical development of plant tissue induced by insects. Galls provide the insect enhanced nutrition and protection against natural enemies and environmental stresses. Galls are essentially plant organs formed by an intimate biochemical interaction between the gall-inducing insect and its host plant. Because galls are plant organs, their development is likely to be governed by phytohormones involved in normal organogenesis. We characterized concentrations of both growth and defensive phytohormones in ungalled control leaves and galls

Uptake of ferrocyanide in willow and poplar trees in a long term greenhouse experiment.

Phytoremediation of sites contaminated with iron cyanides can be performed using poplar and willow trees. Poplar and willow trees were grown in potting substrate spiked with ferrocyanide concentrations of up to 2,000 mg kg(-1) for 4 and 8 weeks respectively. Soil solution and leaf tissue of different age were sampled for total cyanide analysis every week. Chlorophyll content in the leaves was determined to quantify cyanide toxicity. Results showed that cyanide in the soil solution of spiked soils differed between treatments and on weekly basis and ranged from 0.5 to 1,200 mg l(-1). The maximum

Developing fungal pigments for "painting" vascular plants.

The use of fungal pigments as color additives to wood as a method to increase forest revenue is a relatively new, but quickly developing field. Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) is currently the primary utilized hardwood for spalting and appears to be the best suited North American hardwood for such purposes. The combination of Trametes versicolor and Bjerkandera adusta has been identified in several instances as a strong fungal pairing for zone line production; however, Xylaria polymorpha is capable of creating zone lines without the antagonism of a secondary fungus. Few fungal pigments have been
