The Spectrum of Histopathologic Findings in Lungs of Patients With Fatal Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Infection.

CONTEXT.—: Respiratory failure appears to be the ultimate mechanism of death in most patients with severe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. Studies of postmortem COVID-19 lungs largely report diffuse alveolar damage and capillary fibrin thrombi, but we have also observed other patterns. OBJECTIVE.—: To report demographic and radiographic features along with macroscopic, microscopic, and microbiologic postmortem lung findings in patients with COVID-19 infections. DESIGN.—: Patients with confirmed COVID-19 infection and postmortem examination (March 2020-May 2020) were included. C

Magnetic resonance imaging of feline hippocampal necrosis.

The clinical, neuropathologic, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging features in four cats with necrosis of the hippocampus and piriform lobe are described. All cats had acute generalized seizures and behavioral changes including aggression, salivation, polyphagia, and disorientation. Routine hematologic, serum chemistry, and cerebrospinal fluid analyses were normal. MR imaging abnormalities were restricted to the area of the hippocampus and piriform lobe. The lesions were T2-hyperintense, T1-hypointense, and were characterized by various degrees of contrast enhancement. Lesions were consistent

Tauopathy in the young autistic brain: novel biomarker and therapeutic target.

Given our recent discovery of somatic mutations in autism spectrum disorder (ASD)/intellectual disability (ID) genes in postmortem aged Alzheimer's disease brains correlating with increasing tauopathy, it is important to decipher if tauopathy is underlying brain imaging results of atrophy in ASD/ID children. We concentrated on activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP), a prevalent autism gene. The unique availability of multiple postmortem brain sections of a 7-year-old male, heterozygous for ADNP de novo mutation c.2244Adup/p.His559Glnfs*3 allowed exploration of tauopathy, reflecting

Rapid death following undiagnosed stercoral perforation in a chronic opioid user.

A case of rapid demise following an undiagnosed stercoral perforation is reported. A 57-year-old woman on chronic opioid replacement therapy presented with constipation and abdominal pain to the hospital. Following an unremarkable abdominal radiograph and admission for laxation and pain therapy, she was found dead only 18 h later. To exclude medical malpractice, a postmortem investigation was ordered. Postmortem computed tomography and autopsy revealed fatal fecal peritonitis based on a stercoral perforation of the rectosigmoid, which had been undiagnosed. This report highlights the need for e

Postmortem MRI detection of a dentate nucleus lesion of uncertain significance in a death with suspected heat exposure.

The forensic diagnosis of heat-related death remains challenging when objective pathological indicators are absent. We report a case in which circumstantial and environmental investigative information raised suspicion of heat exposure, although classical autopsy findings associated with heatstroke, such as marked elevation of rectal temperature or renal myoglobin casts, were not identified. Postmortem computed tomography revealed no apparent intracranial abnormalities. In contrast, postmortem magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a focal abnormality surrounding the cerebellar dentate nucleus

Intradiscal vacuum phenomenon on postmortem kinetic computed tomography of the cervical spine suggests intact discoligamentous structures.

BACKGROUND: Anterior disc space widening (ADSW), defined in this study as an autopsy-based category of cervical discoligamentous injury, is difficult to diagnose on postmortem computed tomography. The vacuum phenomenon (VP) has been debated as a trauma-related finding, and several studies have suggested that its presence may indicate ADSW. However, VP generation requires a negative-pressure environment and may not occur in structurally disrupted disc spaces. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 395 cases that underwent autopsy and postmortem kinetic CT of the cervical spine, including neutra

Double-outlet right ventricle: morphologic demonstration using nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.

Sixteen patients with double-outlet right ventricle, aged 1 week to 29 years (median 5 months), were studied with a 1.5 tesla nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging scanner. Two-dimensional echocardiography was performed in all patients. Thirteen patients underwent angiography, including nine who underwent subsequent surgical correction. Three patients underwent postmortem examination. Small children and infants were scanned inside a 32 cm diameter proton head coil. Multiple 5 mm thick sections separated by 0.5 mm and gated to the patient's electrocardiogram were acquired with a spin-echo se

The conclusive role of postmortem computed tomography (CT) of the skull and computer-assisted superimposition in identification of an unknown body.

Computed tomography is commonly used in modern medicine, and thus, it is often helpful for medicolegal purposes, especially as part of the antemortem record. The application of postmortem computed tomography and 3D reconstruction of the skull in challenging cases is reported, and its valuable contribution to positive identification is discussed. This paper presents a case in which the body of an unknown individual is identified. Positive identification had not been possible despite a multidisciplinary examination. The postmortem use of computerized tomography and 3D reconstruction of the skull

Virtual Autopsy as a Screening Test Before Traditional Autopsy: The Verona Experience on 25 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Interest has grown into the use of multidetector computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging as an adjunct or alternative to the invasive autopsy. We sought to investigate these possibilities in postmortem CT scan using an innovative virtual autopsy approach. METHODS: Twenty-five postmortem cases were scanned with the Philips Brilliance CT-64 and then underwent traditional autopsy. The images were interpreted by two blinded forensic pathologists assisted by a radiologist with the INFOPSY® Digital Autopsy Software System which provides three-dimensional images in Digita

Post Mortem Diagnosis of Blake's Pouch Cyst: A Presentation of Distended Cyst at Necropsy.

BACKGROUND: Blake's pouch cyst forms from non-permeabilization of Blake's pouch. It is difficult to visualize at necropsy as the cyst ruptures easily into the 4th ventricle during dissection. CASE REPORT: Based upon prenatal imaging, delicate dissection allowed post-mortem confirmation of the Blake's pouch cyst. CONCLUSIONS: This highlights the importance of utilizing premortem imaging to help guide the postmortem dissection and documentation of a posterior fossa cyst.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma masquerading as demyelination.

Patients with predominantly neurological symptoms and signs as their first manifestation of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) represent a diagnostic challenge. We present the clinical course, imaging findings and postmortem pathological correlates of a patient first presenting to neurology with symptoms relating to DLBCL. He died before confirmation of the diagnosis despite early suspicion of central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma and relevant investigation. The diagnosis was confirmed at postmortem by immunohistochemistry of spinal and brain lesions. MRI showing CNS lesions consistent with

Histopathologic Analysis of the Posterior Segment for Terson's Syndrome: The GioBiopsy Technique.

The purpose of this study was to report on a case of Terson's syndrome (TS) using a novel instrument and technique to harvest posterior pole pathology from a postmortem eye. A modified ocular clamp was used to remove the posterior pole from the postmortem enucleated eye. Gross photographs were taken and an ocular sample of the posterior pole was sent to The New York Eye and Ear Pathology Laboratory. TS was identified from gross pathology and histologic examinations. The case history was consistent with that diagnosis. The authors concluded that high-quality gross and histopathologic examinatio

Using post-mortem computed tomography to identify traumatic cranial lesions in small stranded odontocetes euthanised via ballistics.

AIMS: To describe the pathophysiology caused by ballistics applied to the head of stranded cetaceans that required euthanasia and use this information to infer the likely welfare implications of these real-life euthanasia events. METHODS: Post-mortem computed tomography (PMCT) imaging was conducted on six cetacean carcasses of five different species that were submitted for dissection following ballistics euthanasia. No animals were euthanised for the purpose of this study. All data were collected opportunistically at stranding events where euthanasia was a priori deemed necessary by the Depar

Post-mortem magnetic resonance foetal imaging: a study of morphological correlation with conventional autopsy and histopathological findings.

The aim of the present study is to offer our experience concerning post-mortem magnetic resonance (PMMR) in foetal death cases and an evaluation of the differences between the findings acquired by PMMR and by forensic autopsy. Fifteen foetuses were recruited from July 2014 to December 2015. These had suffered intrauterine death in women in the 21st to 38th week of gestation who were treated in the emergency department for non-perception of foetal movements. We performed a PMMR on foetuses, 3 ± 1 days on average from the time of death, and then a complete forensic autopsy was performed. All 15

A History of Senile Plaques: From Alzheimer to Amyloid Imaging.

Senile plaques have been studied in postmortem brains for more than 120 years and the resultant knowledge has not only helped us understand the etiology and pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease (AD), but has also pointed to possible modes of prevention and treatment. Within the last 15 years, it has become possible to image plaques in living subjects. This is arguably the single greatest advance in AD research since the identification of the Aβ peptide as the major plaque constituent. The limitations and potentialities of amyloid imaging are still not completely clear but are perhaps best glimpse

Myocardial distribution of indium-111-antimyosin Fab in acute inferior and right ventricular infarction: comparison with technetium-99m-pyrophosphate imaging and histologic examination.

In a postmortem study of a 69-yr-old female patient who had suffered 2 yr previously a non-Q-wave anterior infarction and who had sustained just seven days earlier a left inferior and right ventricular infarction, the distribution of 111In-antimyosin Fab was compared to the results of 99mTc-pyrophosphate imaging and histologic examination. Indium-111-antimyosin Fab imaging could not be performed because of cardiogenic shock. However, postmortem gamma scintillation counting revealed increased activities of antimyosin Fab in the inferoapical and right ventricular infarcted regions in which 99mTc

Dental Identification Utilizing Implant-Supported Fixed Prostheses in a Nearly Skeletonized Individual: A Case Report.

Forensic dental examination was performed on a nearly skeletonized decedent in whom both maxillary and mandibular complete dentures remained, an uncommon finding in deceased individuals. Careful manipulation of residual soft tissues permitted visualization of the underlying osseous and prosthetic components. Postmortem findings demonstrated extensive implant therapy in both arches, consisting of implant-supported fixed complete dentures retained by multiple endosseous implants. Antemortem dental records, including digital panoramic and periapical radiographs with treatment documentation, were

Postmortem tissue biomarkers of menopausal transition.

The menopausal transition (MT) is associated with an increased risk for many disorders including neurological and mental disorders. Brain imaging studies in living humans show changes in brain metabolism and structure that may contribute to the MT-associated brain disease risk. Although deficits in ovarian hormones have been implicated, cellular and molecular studies of the brain undergoing MT are currently lacking, mostly due to a difficulty in studying MT in postmortem human brain. To enable this research, we explored 40 candidate biomarkers for menopausal status in 42 pre-, peri-, and post-
