BACKGROUND: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is commonly accepted as a valid measure of postural stability. However, reliability values have varied, and subtle changes undetectable with the human eye may exist postinjury. The inertial measurement unit in commercially available tablets has been used to quantify postural sway (instrumented Balance Error Scoring System [iBESS] volume). However, iBESS has not been validated in a military population, and the stability of the tests beyond 1 week is unknown.
HYPOTHESIS: iBESS volume is capable of objectively measuring postural sway during the

BACKGROUND: The combination of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with balance training could integrate central and peripheral neural mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of concurrent balance training and tDCS over the supplementary motor area (SMA) on anticipatory postural adjustments during gait initiation (GI) in persons with chronic ankle instability (CAI).
HYPOTHESIS: Balance training will increase the center of pressure (COP) velocity and displacement during GI phases in all participants, and those receiving real tDCS will show greater increases.

INTRODUCTION: Postural balance impairment can affect the quality of life of patients with Parkinson's disease. Previous studies have described connections of the vestibular system with postural functions, suggesting a potential participation of the basal ganglia in receiving vestibular stimuli. This systematic review aims to summarize the evidence on the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation on postural balance in patients with Parkinson's disease.
METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using the electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, Scopus and PEDro. The study selection was independ

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between back muscle strength and proprioception or mechanoreceptor control strategies used for postural balance in elderly adults with lumbar spondylosis. The displacement of the center of pressure (COP) excursion was determined in 24 elderly adults with lumbar spondylosis and 24 healthy young adults while the participants were standing upright on a balance board with their eyes closed. Vibratory stimulations of 30, 60, and 240 Hz were applied to the gastrocnemius (GS) and lumbar multifidus (LM) muscles to evaluate the effect of different propri

INTRODUCTION: An altered sense of verticality, associated with impaired proprioception and somatosensory integration deficits, has been reported in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but it has not been characterized in patients with Pisa syndrome (PS). Therefore, we investigated postural control, balance, and gait disturbances in patients with PD and PS, patients with PD but without PS, and aged-matched normal controls.
METHODS: This observational cross-sectional study involved patients with PD and PS (n = 10, Hoehn & Yahr score <4), patients with PD but without PS (n = 10), and age-matc

UNLABELLED: Ballet dancers require a high level of postural balance (PB) and proprioception ability during performance. As textured insoles inserted into ballet shoes were found to improve proprioception ability, and better proprioceptive acuity was associated with better PB, the aim of the present study was to investigate whether the association between ankle inversion movement discrimination (AIMD) and PB changed following wearing textured insoles in young male and female dancers.
METHODS: Forty-four dancers from the Australian Ballet School, ages 14-19 yrs, were tested for static and dynam

Falls are a common problem in older adults. Impaired balance, mobility and postural stability are risk factors for falling. Limited research has been performed on Pilates exercise and the ability to decrease fall risk. In this quasi-experimental study, 35 adults (61-87 years old) participated in an 8-week Pilates based exercise program. Blind examiners conducted the Timed Up and Go (TUG), Forward Reach Test, and Turn 180 Test before and after the intervention. Number of falls, perception of Pilates, and fear of falling was also recorded. Thirty-two (91.4%) participants completed post-test meas

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2013eng
UNLABELLED: The task of standing up from a chair forms a part of daily life for all independent individuals. However, this task becomes more difficult with advancing age. Women with postmenopausal osteoporosis presented diminished knee extensor and flexor muscle strength. There was a weak correlation between knee muscle strength (greater with extensor strength) and postural balance during the act of standing up.
INTRODUCTION: This study aims to evaluate postural balance during the transition from sitting to standing and its relationship with knee extensor and flexor strength among women with

Adolescents with visual impairment (VI) often exhibit reduced physical fitness (PF) and functional autonomy due to limited sensory input and restricted opportunities for physical activity (PA). While integrating music into exercise programs has been shown to enhance motor engagement and sensory compensation in other populations, its potential role within physical training for adolescents with VI remains underexplored. Therefore, this study investigated whether integrating music listening into a combined strength-proprioceptive physical training program could further enhance PF in adolescents w

BACKGROUND: Traditional screening methods for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) can be time-consuming in community settings. Balance and gait impairments are common in individuals with DPN, but these functional impairments are often not detectable with standard neurological examinations. This study aimed to examine whether quantitative balance and gait assessment could serve as a viable alternative screening tool for DPN.
METHODS: All participants were recruited from a community-based daycare center and underwent peripheral nerve function assessments, including the Toronto Clinical Neuropa

Background and Objectives: Dual-task training (DTT) is an innovative therapeutic approach that involves the simultaneous application of two tasks, which can be motor, cognitive, or a combination of both. Children with cerebral palsy (CP) often exhibit impairments in balance, motor skills, and gait, conditions that may be amenable to improvement through DTT. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of DTT in enhancing balance, walking speed, and gross motor function-related balance in children with CP. Materials and Methods: In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive
