Negative mood regulation expectancies moderate the relationship between psychological abuse and avoidant coping.

This study explored the relationships among psychological abuse, attitudes about intimate partner violence (IPV), negative mood regulation expectancies (NMRE), and coping. Participants were 126 female college students in dating, cohabitating, or married relationships within the previous year. In one single session, they completed self-report scales measuring IPV, NMRE, and coping. Results indicated that women reporting higher levels of psychological abuse reported less negative attitudes toward IPV, engaged in less-active coping responses, and had lower NMRE. Psychological abuse was a signific

Prioritising Psychological Prehabilitation Interventions for Cancer Surgery: An International Delphi Study.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative mental wellbeing is an important determinant of postoperative recovery, yet psychological care is frequently overlooked within multidisciplinary prehabilitation programmes. When included, psychological interventions are fragmented and inconsistently delivered. This study aimed to establish international multidisciplinary consensus on preferred psychological prehabilitation interventions for patients undergoing urogenital, thoracic or gastrointestinal cancer surgery, and to describe current practice. METHODS: A three-round Delphi was conducted between February and Sept

Structuring the psychological "State" assessment process for sports psychologists: a proposal for a theory-based holistic model.

The aim of this perspective paper is to propose a theory-based holistic assessment model that structures the psychological state assessment process conducted by sport psychologists. It is observed that existing assessment approaches in the field of sports psychology largely focus on individual psychological variables, and measurement tools are mostly used independently of one another. This situation makes it difficult to comprehensively assess the multidimensional structure of the athlete's psychological profile and leads to a lack of standardization in application processes. The model was dev

Psychological dynamics shaping performance perception in athletes: the influence of coaching behaviours, psychological safety, self-efficacy, and resilience.

This study aimed to examine how athletes' perceptions of supportive and controlling coaching behaviours influence their perceived performance through the mediating effects of psychological safety, self-efficacy, and psychological resilience. Unlike previous work, this study integrates these three psychological factors into a single structural model, offering a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms linking coaching behaviours to performance perceptions. Data were collected from 369 Turkish athletes representing different sports and competitive levels using validated self-report question

Estimating prevalence of common chronic morbidities in Australia.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate prevalence of selected diagnosed chronic diseases among patients attending general practice, in the general practice patient population, and in the Australian population, and to compare population estimates with those of the National Health Survey (NHS). DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: In late 2005, 305 general practitioners each provided data for about 30 consecutive patients (total, 9156) as part of the BEACH (Bettering the Evaluation And Care of Health) program, a continuous national study of general practice activity. GPs used their knowledge of the patient, pati

From fragmentation to transtheoretical models of psychological therapy.

In psychological therapy, clinical training and practice is usually based on one or several of the traditional theoretical treatment orientations' subvariants and varies considerably from country to country. However, no traditional clinical theory provides a fully defined and tested causal network between concepts of disorders and clinical interventions that includes tests of alternative explanations. Adhering to the traditional orientations also bears the risk of hindering innovation and the dynamic exchange of ideas. As a consequence, therapists decide which theory to follow based on their c

Self-regulated vocal health in undergraduate vocal music education: a qualitative needs analysis.

Self-regulated vocal health is an important but underdeveloped dimension of undergraduate vocal music education. While vocal training commonly emphasizes technique, repertoire, interpretation, and performance competence, less empirical attention has been given to how students learn to monitor vocal condition, regulate practice behavior, manage emotional readiness, and protect the voice across daily learning and performance preparation. This qualitative needs analysis examined how vocal health self-regulation is understood, represented, and required within undergraduate vocal music education. D

Practice for Parturition: Does Sexual Activity Improve Labor and Birth Outcomes?

Niles Newton, a prolific reproductive biologist, described physical, psychological, and hormonal similarities between female sexual response and childbirth. Such phenotypic overlap indicates shared mechanisms, which led Newton to suggest that dysfunction in one process could interfere with the other process. There currently exists very little research on how pre-birth female sexuality impacts subsequent parturition. We address this knowledge gap and extend Newton's work by proposing that sexual activity provides opportunities for women to physically and psychologically prepare for childbirth,

Body image, disordered eating and anabolic steroid use in female bodybuilders.

Body dissatisfaction and unhealthy eating practices are common among sports and activities that require low body fat or low body weight for enhanced performance. Competitive Bodybuilding is a sport that requires participants to be exceptionally lean and mesomorphic, thus participants may be vulnerable to developing unhealthy eating and weight control practices, as well as using anabolic steroids. This study compares competitive female bodybuilders (CFBBs) and recreational female weight-training controls (RFWTs) on a broad scope of eating related and general psychological characteristics. 'Perfect skin', the media and patients with skin disease: a qualitative study of patients with acne, psoriasis and atopic eczema.

The relationship of skin disease with societal ideals of beauty, and the role of the media in this relationship, has not previously been researched. The overall objective of this study was to explore the psychological effects of skin disease. The theme of the ideal of perfect skin and the role of the media in generating this ideal arose via an inductive study methodology and was explored in the context of respondents' psychological morbidity. A qualitative study, 62 semi-structured interviews were conducted with respondents with acne, eczema or psoriasis recruited from both general practice an

Implementing psychological therapies for functional GI disorders in children and adults.

INTRODUCTION: Functional GI disorders (FGIDs) are common in adults and children. Psychological factors play an important role in the onset and maintenance of FGIDs and in explaining the associated disability. Psychological treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hypnotherapy have been found efficacious in FGIDs but Integrating psychological treatments into traditionally medically-oriented care can be challenging. AREAS COVERED: This review outlines the case for integrating psychological therapies into medical care for FGIDs and examine various models of integrated care that can be

Differential reinforcement using matched examples and nonexamples expedites the practice needed to learn concepts.

Conceptual learning refers to correctly identifying novel examples and nonexamples of a concept. Concepts can be taught by presenting stimuli and differentially reinforcing responses to examples but not nonexamples. However, it is unclear which stimuli should be used and whether specifically designed stimuli can result in correct responding even in the absence of differential reinforcement. Stimulus selection can be informed by identifying features that a stimulus must have to be an example and can have without altering whether the stimulus is an example or a nonexample. Previous research sugg

Learning from mistakes: Objective and subjective error magnitudes predict the testing effect.

The testing effect-where retrieval practice enhances memory more than restudy-remains mechanistically debated. We advance an error-driven learning (EDL) account, proposing that testing enhances memory by generating error signals that drive learning. Across two experiments using a color-wheel paradigm, we quantified retrieval errors on a continuous scale and examined three types of error signals: objective errors (OE), defined as the angular discrepancy between the correct color and the participant's response; predicted errors (PredE), defined as participants' prefeedback estimate of how inaccu

French translation and linguistic validation of four questionnaires relevant to psychological interventions targeting persistent dyspnea: The Breathlessness catastrophizing questionnaire, the breathlessness beliefs questionnaire, the COPD self-efficacy scale, and the three-domain interoceptive sensations questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions such as medical hypnosis, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based techniques are emerging as promising tools in the management of persistent dyspnea. Their integration into clinical practice, however, is limited by the scarcity of validated outcome measures in non-English languages. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide linguistically validated French versions of four questionnaires selected for their potential relevance in assessing the psychological and perceptual dimensions of dyspnea: the Breathlessness Catastrophizing Questionna

Biopsychosocial contributors to irritability in individuals with shoulder or low back pain.

OBJECTIVES: Irritability is a foundational clinical reasoning concept in rehabilitation to evaluate reactivity of the examination and treatment. While originally theorized to reflect tissue damage, a large body of evidence supports pain is a biopsychosocial experience impacted by pain sensitivity and psychological factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine biopsychosocial contributors to irritability. METHODS: 40 patients with shoulder (n = 20) and low back (n = 20) pain underwent Quantitative Sensory Testing (QST) (Pressure Pain Threshold, Heat Pain Threshold, Conditioned P

Psychological support for children with diabetes: are the guidelines being met?

The significant role of psychosocial factors in the management of type 1 diabetes in youth has been well documented. The International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) therefore published the Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines for psychological care of young patients. However, it is unclear if and how these guidelines are being implemented. A questionnaire was created to assess implementation of the guidelines and directed to physicians through the ISPAD listserve via a web-based survey. One hundred fifty-five participants from 47 countries completed the survey. Ninety

Psychological burden in patients with angina and unobstructed coronary arteries-underestimated, underexplored, undertreated.

Patients with angina and unobstructed coronary arteries (ANOCA) are frequently encountered in clinical practice. These cases represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge and are often characterized by a long patient journey until a diagnosis of coronary vasomotor disorders is established. Moreover, the unsatisfactory management of such patients leads to insecurity, ongoing symptoms, and psychological sequelae such as anxiety or depression. Currently, the psychological burden in patients with ANOCA is underestimated, underexplored, and undertreated. This review gives a new perspective on th

Approximate numerical abilities and mathematics: Insight from correlational and experimental training studies.

Humans have the ability to nonverbally represent the approximate numerosity of sets of objects. The cognitive system that supports this ability, often referred to as the approximate number system (ANS), is present in early infancy and continues to develop in precision over the life span. It has been proposed that the ANS forms a foundation for uniquely human symbolic number and mathematics learning. Recent work has brought two types of evidence to bear on the relationship between the ANS and human mathematics: correlational studies showing individual differences in approximate numerical abilit
